An excellent introduction to psychology

An excellent introduction to psychology. I purchased a second copy to be able to share it with friends. Both copies are currently missing.

It includes the developmental aspect of psychology in a way that (perhaps all?) other textbooks do not. It is also concise but thoroughly backed up with cited studies. Reading this book is a fast track to understanding human beings and their relationships. If there is something I would ask from the author, it would be to further expand the topic of adult development, notably the part on the Model of Hierarchical Complexity.

William A. Yost is Professor of Hearing Sciences, Adjunct Professor of Psychology, and Adjunct Professor of Otolaryngology at Loyola University Chicago. He is also director of the Parmly Institute and the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Minor.

Necessary Yet Dreary

While a must-read, Yost's writing is dense and difficult. This reviewer has a Ph.D. in French and is therefore not unused to reading arcane and obscure texts. The information could be presented in a much more straight forward style. However, given the fact that audiology programs have a high weed-out component, this could be why this textbook has survived as a leading basic textbook. The skillful reader will be able to appreciate what an exciting discipline audiology can be. It will only be the determined, expert reader who will be able to use the text well. Advice to the young person who is faced with this book: hang in there--yes, it is difficult to read, and no, you should not write this way if it ever becomes your turn to write a textbook!

and not useful for the class

I bought this for my Hearing Science class. It was required for a "different perspective". Honestly... I looked in it a few times. But the language and substance coverage in the book was way over many of my peers, including myself, and not useful for the class. If you like a technical book filled with tons of information and like a dry read... go for it. But I did not enjoy reading any part of it. Very hard to follow and not easy to read.

J Wood has you covered

If I ever had to complain about Lost, it would be about the way they leave me hanging and bewildered. All the while that I have watched this show I know there are a million things that I'm just not picking up on, and therefore I'm Lost.

And then along came J Wood to the rescue.

I first came across J when I ran into his blog on Powells.com. He guts out each episode six ways to Sunday, and then he checks back in to answer further questions. What I like best about J's analysis of Lost is that its clear that he's not just a TV nerd. He seems to know a little something about everything. Not only does J understand the intricacies of what is happening on the show, he delivers about six more layers of meaning to everything that happens on the show.

These layers are described beautifully in his book, making you see the show entirely different, and even some aspects of real life.

Living Lost has value as cultural criticism, a lesson in literary theory, the answers to all of your lost questions, and just a plain old entertaining read. I've read it twice and still reference it as an excellent coffe table reader.

This isn't your standard TV "unofficial" guide to the show. It is actually a fantastic work of cultural criticism that touches on politics, art and literature. Highly recommended for people who are interested in the intricacies behind the storytelling of LOST.
