This book is five stars, two-thumbs up, knock your socks off good.

What an amazing resource this is.

I've been in or around the skilled trades my entire life (I don't mean just my adult life; my dad gave me tools for every birthday and Christmas starting with my first one). And for several years, I was a licensed Master Electrician. There aren't many "handy man" jobs that I can't do. I expected to learn a few things from this book, but even with that background I came across one gem after another that I hadn't known.

As a further note on my background, I've been writing and editing for the nation's leading electrical trade magazine since 1996. So when I come across any book or article related to the skilled trades, I'm as concerned with the quality of the writing as with the accuracy of the information. Additionally, for nearly as many years I've been working with the nation's leading developer of electrical exam preparation products and other electrical training materials; so I have a keen appreciation of the need for setting the tone. I've also written several guides and standards for the National Electrical Contractors Association, which serves the nation's electrical unions; there, a huge concern is addressing all areas of knowledge that an electrician will need on the job. This "completeness" is another aspect beyond the ones I've mentioned.

In this books, all of these (and others) have been done with a great deal of care to get it right. It is an understatement to say I am impressed.

Even the arrangement of the book reflects correctly "setting the tone." When I've tried to teach someone how to do a skilled trade task, I've often found the person didn't really understand the tools for doing the job. When I learned various skilled trades, my mentors made sure I understood how to correctly use the right tool for a particular job. That's one reason why, for example, I don't use screwdrivers as prybars and why I avoid using adjustable wrenches (rather than exact wrench).

This book starts off with four "general" chapters: Your Home, Hand Tools, Power Tools, and Fasteners & Adhesives. While I found myself mostly nodding in approval while reading these, I also found myself thinking, "Wow, I didn't know that. How helpful!". The book doesn't have formal Part 1, Part 2, etc. But you can consider these four chapters to constitute Part 1.

In keeping with this theme, Part 2 consists of chapters devoted to particular trades or groups of trades. It's important to note that this book does not pretend to qualify you as, for example, a Master Electrician. For each trade, it explains the "how to" that a reasonably competent do-it-yourselfer can be reasonably expected to do. There are some things you don't do without extensive qualifications. For example, you might run a new branch circuit in your home but you need to leave an electrical service panel change-out to a licensed electrician.

Here are those chapters and the trades they represent. The skill level is, in my opinion, toward the high end of apprentice.

*Plumbing. Obviously, plumber.
*Electricity. Obviously, electrician.
*Home climate. Insulator, HVAC tech, and system installer. This chapter shows you how to do relatively simple things like replace a water heater, insulate an attic, install a dehumidifier, and so forth. It also gives you a strong foundation in all concepts related to home climate equipment and systems. So while you aren't personally going to install a heat pump system you will understand what that entails and thus be able to select the right system for your home and competently oversee the installation.
*Interior repairs & improvements. Building maintenance inspector, drywaller, finish carpenter, flooring installer, window installer, door installer, and others. This chapter alone justifies the cost of the book.
*Painting and wallpapering. Painter, wall paper installer. I have seen hugely shoddy work by DIYs who don't have a clue. PLEASE, if you have not been trained in painting by a qualified person don't attempt a paint job. Here's a simple test. Real painters don't usually need masking tape. Do you know the technique for painting the top edge of a wall without getting paint onto the ceiling, using just the brush? If not, hire a painter. Wall paper jobs are notorious for degrading into nasty fights between spouses who didn't know what they were doing when they started. If you're married and want to avoid the cost of a divorce, don't attempt to save money by winging a wallpaper job. Hire it done, or take the time to understand how (this book explains it).

If the book were divided into parts, then Part 3 would cover not the tools (Part 1) or the skills/trades (Part 2), but the applications. What "application" means in construction parlance is where the work is done. The chapters:

*Exteriors. This covers the gamut, including ladder safety (each year, falls from ladders are at or near the top of OSHA's "accident cause" list). This is thorough, covering every aspect of exterior maintenance and repair. It's also an excellent resource if you're considering an upgrade project of some sort for your home's exterior. Even if you ultimately don't do the project yourself, you will understand what makes a job a quality job and you can manage the project to get the best result for the dollars you spend.
*Landscaping. This covers everything from various types of retaining walls to various types of fences, to decks, patios, and water gardens.
*Windows & Doors. Most homes don't have good windows or good doors. I have replaced all of the ones in my home. I didn't have an education on these seemingly simple product categories, and it turns out they are far from simple. I wish I'd had this book when doing those projects. That would have saved me a great deal of time and probably some money. Fortunately, it turns out that I made the right choices. I just wasn't efficient in getting there, due to a big knowledge gap I had to fill.

Part 4, if this book were arranged in parts, would be about types of materials:

*Concrete, Masonry, & Asphalt. Pretty self-explanatory. I've done some concrete work, and have built and poured footings. This books is spot-on, for that topic. My cousin worked as a mason for many years, but we didn't talk shop. So I can't comment on the accuracy of the masonry information but it sure sounds correct to me. Ditto for asphalt (except it was a childhood neighbor, not a cousin).
*Woodworking & Furniture Repair. I've done many projects in this area, and this book does show the correct methods. However, for most of this kind of work you need a bit of the artisan to get a good outcome. Or, in many cases, you need special equipment to do the work. For example, I had my dining table professionally refinished. I didn't have the space, for one thing. But if you read this chapter you'll probably guess at my other reasons for having it done. I have refinished many smaller items, however. I've also repaired couches, chairs, and other items. But there is a line I draw based on knowing what it takes to do the job right.
*Metals & Plastics. This is another area in which I have been extensively trained and have seen the most awful work done by the untrained DIY. Don't try to save money by "winging it." If you have a desire to this kind of work, you need the kind of "how to" that this chapter covers. And you'll need special tools.

The last two chapters are:

*Healthy Home & Emergency Repair. I've put significant resources into making my home a healthy home. When this topic comes up in conversation, people are often surprised at what this means. And they find out they live in a toxic home. But they don't have to. Read this chapter!
*Storage Projects. The first rule of storage is to get rid of things. There's a limit to that, especially if your home is a sort of base for projects, sports, hobbies, or even "make your living" work. I thought I had the storage thing nailed, but discovered some great tips in this chapter.

This book gets my highest recommendation. If you're a home owner, it's a "must read." If you're an apartment-dweller, in some ways it will be even more so (for reasons including those last two chapters, much of which you can apply even in an apartment setting).

Easy to follow directions

Great go to source for all things handy. Wide variety of topics and projects with easy to follow instructions. This book has saved me a lot of money by allowing me to complete projects, small to big, on my own. I am by no means a handy person, but with the Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual I can at least pretend to be.

Wide breadth but shallow depth

As an experience DIY'er from the UK I was a bit confused by the terms I kept seeing on websites as they are so different to what I was used to.
I bought this book as a reference guide and it's not bad. It has a wide breadth of coverage, but it really does lack depth in every field.
If I think of an area I need to research it gives me the very basics, and I find I then have to turn to the net to find out the rest.

About the Author
When Mance Ian Wright retired in 2005, he and his wife moved from Des Moines, Iowa, to the Ozark Mountains. After settling in, he started writing short stories. **WARNING!! This review WILL contain spoilers from the first book in the Keaton Series, AWAY. You MUST read Away before picking up STAY. You have been warned. **

I honestly do not even know where to begin with this review. I read Away shortly after it was released and while Jason and Cassandra were falling in love, I was falling in love with B.a. Wolfe’s writing. Her ability to create a scene is something else. Every time I read it, I was transported to Keaton and into this world that she�created. I could feel every emotion and visualize�every image. Then, B.a. did the unthinkable…the unimaginable. She killed off the main character. I will forever remember sitting in my bed at 3 am, doing the ugly cry, and throwing my kindle down on the bed in a huff. My husband gave up trying to figure out why I was so upset.� I was devastated that not only was it over with Jason and Cassie, but he was gone; ripped away from her. After everything she had lost, she continued to lose more. I was so angry!! I knew there would be a sequel, but I was devastated that Cassandra wasn’t getting her happily ever after, and�wasn’t even sure I wanted to read it.

“Just breathe, baby. I’ve got you”

The ending of Away sucked…there is no other way to put it. But, when people say there is a reason for everything, believe them. Jason had to die so we could meet Aidan. Oh, Aidan. Sweet, sexy, �swoon-worthy Aidan. Aidan is Jason’s brother and a bit of a mystery during the events of Away. We know he left home shortly after Jason revealed how sick he was.� We know that the Bradley’s do not like to talk about him, or really even acknowledge that he is a part of their lives. We are about to get all the answers�however, and get to the bottom of why he left and what his future holds now that his brother is gone.

Cassandra is barely holding on. Jason’s death has ROCKED her. She knows she has to keep it together, if not for her, then for Jase, her beautiful baby boy. Jason’s best friend Moose, and Cassie’s best friend Mel, help Cassandra to keep moving forward. As they approach the one-year anniversary of Jason’s passing, Cassie plans to return to Keaton, a place she has avoided for the entire year, honor Jason’s memory, and hope to reconnect with Jason’s parents. Cassie has no idea what awaits her in Keaton or that her one, true love is waiting in the wings.

“I need a sign. Please, just send me a sign.” The last of my tears trickled down, collecting on the ground. “I love you, Jase. Green light forever."

Cassandra is about to get her sign. Jason asks Aidan (or Dan as he is also called), to watch out for Cassie. He needs Aidan to keep an eye on her and protect her. Aidan does that through Moose, until he accidentally bumps into Cassie. He knows who she is, but she has no idea she is staring at Jason’s estranged brother. All Cassie knows is the intense pull she feels towards him. She has felt virtually nothing since losing Jason and for the first time in a year, she is feeling a whole lot of something.

Aidan can no longer maintain the secret of his connection to Jason, when Cassie and Aidan meet at the Bradley’s house. Cassie feels betrayed and hurt that Aidan didn’t tell her who he was, but the pull that keeps dragging Cassie and Aidan together is entirely too strong for either of them to deny. Cassie thinks it’s wrong for her to have feelings for Aidan. She refuses to be disloyal to Jason that way. Thankfully, Aidan refuses to give up on them. He will be strong for both of them if he needs to be.� Aidan realizes their relationship is a bit unconventional, but that doesn’t make it any less right, and he will fight for the right to call her his.

I am going to be honest here. This book was TORTURE! Absolute TORTURE. It was a beautiful type of torture, but torture nonetheless. After the gut wrenching, heartbreaking ending to Away, I honestly expected Cassandra to catch a break. Clearly, B.a didn’t think Cassie had endured enough anguish and suffering in her life and thought she should have to undergo more. I cannot tell you how many times I cried in this book. It felt as if I was crying every 10 pages. I am not a crier. I have said over and over how much it takes for a story to make me cry. I’ve seen it all, and you better bring it if you want to affect me in that way. Well, B.a. took that challenge and ran with it. It brought new meaning to the quote, “If you want the rainbow, you have to put up with the rain.” There were so many gorgeous moments of love and growth in this book. Cassandra works hard to pull out of the darkness she found herself in after Jason’s death. She realized all she needed to do was reach for Aidan’s hand and he would help guide her out. Their love story is not without more than their fair share of bumps in the road, but I am happy to say my kindle, along with a�box of tissues, remained firmly in hand.

“I’ll be your X’s and O’s,” I whispered into her ear.
She released a soft breath as she nuzzled against my cheek.
“And I’ll be yours.”

Another Amazing Story!! One of the best books of 2014!!

I was lucky enough to have beta read this story. I absolutely fell in love with the author's writing after reading her first novel, Away. I thought that nothing could top that story and boy, I was wrong!! Stay brings the tears, drama, heat, and overall experience to a whole new level.

Now, we first meet Cassie, who's living life after the sudden death of Jase. It's one year later and she's making her way through life, hanging on by mere shreds of hope. After an unexpected run in with a handsome stranger, she feels her body come back to life. Who was this man she bumped into? She couldn't get him out of her mind and she had the tiniest inclination that somehow she met him before. It's so hard not to say too much because I don't want to give anything away. All I can say is this book is freaking awesome!! BA Wolfe has done it again! I am not a crier and OH-EM-GEE!! I bawled and bawled like a brand new baby!

I read this book months ago and as I type this review, I can still feel the emotions that I experienced while reading it. Talk about a serious BOOK HANGOVER!! This story has it all; love, romance, drama, some HOT lovin', and most of all; HOPE. Hope, that even when you're in the dumps, after your first love passes away, there's still that everlasting love that is waiting for you.

And as you read this story, be prepared. Tissues Required. Gut-wrenching, heart warming, kindle throwing events will occur.

I cannot wait for the next installment of the series. I'm so excited for MOOOOOSSEEE!!!!

In this ethnography, Sheriff (anthropology, Florida International Univ.) challenges the decades-old claim that Brazil is relatively free of racial prejudice and functions as a democracia racial ("racial democracy") by examining how discourse there constructs cultural understanding. To better appreciate how Brazilians talk about (or avoid talking about) color, race, and racism in everyday life, Sheriff moved to Rio de Janeiro, where she lived in a black shantytown for a year and a half, interviewing the residents, their white, middle-class neighbors, and urban black militants. After studying the narratives of residents who described themselves and others in color terms, she came to the conclusion that most Brazilians are very aware that racial discrimination exists in their society but help maintain the status quo by keeping silent. The groups, the tactics, the history & science- a small handy guide to understanding how these groups work

This book is not at all long- it's rather concise, but packed full of information. It has opened the world of community organizing as a science up to me. I had heard the term, but wasn't familiar with really what it entailed. I feel much more educated on the subject since reading this.

I like to keep track of protest and often watch them as they develop on social media and with livestream. This book is good for anyone with such an interest, or for people involved in any intelligence work or directly with community organizing.

The beginning of the book is a list of all active community organizing groups in the US today. It covers the history of community organizing, how groups are functioning today, and some of the tactics. One of the things I learned was that unconventional tactics to get results are often a modality. In describing how all this works, a lot of things that I have seen and read about in the news really started making sense to me. I had never thought of community organizing as a science of any sorts really, but this book changed my mind about that! ACORN, for instance, is one of the groups covered in detail.

Finally, it's a handy reference book on several of the most prominent groups.

Thoughtful, but not sure of audience...

Community Organizing, by David Walls, is not written as a "how to" book. Rather, it is an academic review of the history of community organizing in the US after 1900, and then a review of the theory and practices of select organizations and movements. I have taught a community service course in the past, and this isn't a book for that course. I've been interested in developing a course in activism, and I don't think this would be a book for that course either, but I certainly can see students reading one or two chapters of it.

Overall, this was an interesting, thoughtful, and well-written book, but I'm not certain who the audience is. However, with that said, I've given it a spot on my bookshelf... time will tell how often I reference this material.

Necessary reading for activists

David Walls has provided a valuable resource for anyone who wants to understand progressive social change in this country. He gives a thoughtful overview of the organizing tradition that sprang from the work of Saul Alinsky, from his knowledge as a serious participant in social change and as an scholar in the field. It is necessary reading for anyone with any interest in community organizing and social change. He notes that he has had an affiliation with one of the national organizing networks, but that he has tried to present the other networks in a fair light; in my experience with some of those other networks, he has done a good job. Indeed, Walls is generous in his comments about the various networks; he also makes some valuable criticisms, though they are perhaps understated. In a world that has at times been characterized by turf battles, I appreciate the spirit he brings to the discussion.

Best mind book for traders!

Yes. ***** Five Stars! Particularly for traders. I have read and enjoyed and gotten something out of Van Tharp, Mark Douglas and Ari Kiev but Harvey Walsh really is easier to read and much more practical. Forget about the review that calls it plagiarism; I have not read that "source" book, but I can tell you that the language, style in Brain Hacks for Traders works very well no matter where it "might" have come from. Best mind book for traders, ever (to date)! God bless you, Harvey.

About the Author
Scholars have determined that there were at least six Thomas Malorys alive in the 1400s when Le Morte d'Arthur was written. Considerable evidence points to the likeliest author as one Sir Thomas Malory or Maleore of Newbold Revell in Warwickshire, who was born in the first quarter of the fifteenth century. A member of the gentry, he became a soldier in the service of Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, with whom he fought in the siege of Calais in 1436. In records of the period he is accused of various crimes--including armed robbery, attempted murder, and rape--and he is said to have executed several dramatic escapes from prison.
Several things about Malory seem indisputable. As in Arthur's time when post-Roman Britain was in a state of fierce tribal war, he lived in an age of great unrest. Europe was still recovering from the Black Plague and a century of war. In England, two powerful families fought for the throne. Although he may have been a scoundrel, Malory was also, it seems clear, a man of ideals who believed in courage and loyalty, and who mourned the passing of chivalry. Incarcerated for long periods, he had many hours to fill his imagination with French romances and tales of chivalry, volumes of which were readily at hand. It is thought that Le Morte d'Arthur was written during his imprisonment.
Malory referred to himself as a 'knight-prisoner.' With a military man's passion for the details of conquest, a prisoner's sense of injustice, and a penitent's desire for redemption, he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to this retelling of the Arthurian legends. Sir Thomas Malory died, it is presumed, around 1471.

SIR THOMAS MALORY was a knight and estate owner in the mid 15th century, who spent many years in prison for political crimes as well as robbery. He wrote "Le Morte dGCOArthur", the first great English prose epic, while imprisoned in Nwgate. The epic was published in 1485 by William Caxton, the first English printer. Malory is believed to have died in 1471.

This is for CHILDREN!

Why is it so hard for people to understand that this is a book for CHILDREN? O'Reilly has taken several of his history books and made them more accessible to children.

I loved "Killing Patton" and bought "Hitler's Last Days" for my grandson - not for myself.

I can't say that I love it because I do not love even thinking about Hitler but it needs to be read by students. This is an excellent book and Bill O'Reilly has done a superb job in writing this book. I would hope that it would be in elementary school library collections as well as social studies classrooms. The pictures are quite interesting and the information is vital for Americans to remember. I think it was very well done.

Good guy, good book

This was a very informative book. If you knew nothing about this topic this was all encompassing and would certainly broaden your knowledge of the time period. O'Reilly gives insight into the personality of each major player. I have been a student of this era for years and have to say that in reading this one book you will learn things that a person would have to read many books to learn. This is a job well done and O'Reilly cites other writers whose works he used,graciously. Good guy, good book, GREAT PHOTOGRAPHS. Fast and easy read.
