Spiegelman, a stalwart of the underground comics scene of the 1960s and '70s, interviewed his father, Vladek, a Holocaust survivor living outside New York City, about his experiences. The artist then deftly translated that story into a graphic novel. By portraying a true story of the Holocaust in comic form--the Jews are mice, the Germans cats, the Poles pigs, the French frogs, and the Americans dogs--Spiegelman compels the reader to imagine the action, to fill in the blanks that are so often shied away from. Reading Maus, you are forced to examine the Holocaust anew.

This is neither easy nor pleasant. However, Vladek Spiegelman and his wife Anna are resourceful heroes, and enough acts of kindness and decency appear in the tale to spur the reader onward (we also know that the protagonists survive, else reading would be too painful). This first volume introduces Vladek as a happy young man on the make in pre-war Poland. With outside events growing ever more ominous, we watch his marriage to Anna, his enlistment in the Polish army after the outbreak of hostilities, his and Anna's life in the ghetto, and then their flight into hiding as the Final Solution is put into effect. Spiegelman relates the effect of those events on the survivors' later years and upon the lives of the following generation. Each scene opens at the elder Spiegelman's home in Rego Park, N.Y. Art, who was born after the war, is visiting his father, Vladek, to record his experiences in Nazi-occupied Poland. The Nazis, portrayed as cats, gradually introduce increasingly repressive measures, until the Jews, drawn as mice, are systematically hunted and herded toward the Final Solution. Vladek saves himself and his wife by a combination of luck and wits, all the time enduring the torment of hunted outcast. The other theme of this book is Art's troubled adjustment to life as he, too, bears the burden of his parents' experiences. This is a complex book. It relates events which young adults, as the future architects of society, must confront, and their interest is sure to be caught by the skillful graphics and suspenseful unfolding of the story. Hardcover Includes Parts I and II

Browsing through the reviews and comments about Maus, I saw that there was some question as to whether the hardcover edition comprised Parts I and II. This is understandable because the product is listed in Amazon as "The Complete Maus: A Survivor's Tale (No 1)," which seems contradictory.

When I was considering purchasing it, I looked at the number of pages that were listed for the edition and guessed that it included both parts of the story. So I bought it, it arrived fine, and I am now writing to confirm that yes, this edition includes I and II.

Amazon should look into this and remove the "(No 1)" from the listing's title.

Oddly Effective and Emotional Presentation …

I made the “mistake” of purchasing Maus II over 20 years ago (simply because the bookstore didn’t have the first volume). Regardless, I found the comic book presentation of the Holocaust surprisingly effective in generating such an emotional read. It took a while, but seeing Maus II sitting on a book shelf without it preceding volume finally bothered me enough to get MAUS – MY FATHER BLEEDS HISTORY. While the second volume (MAUS II) stands fine on its own, MAUS certainly serves as the glue that holds the entire story together.

For the most part, I’m am not a fan of comic books, but Art Spiegelman’s art captivated me at an early age. Spiegelman is one of the original artists that contributed to my first childhood passion: Wacky Packages (trading cards/stickers that satirized common household products). While I didn’t initially connect the dots between the 70s fad and Holocaust-themed comic book, I now see the way Spiegelman attracts me to his work. There is a subtle complexity to his rather simple drawings that made reading MAUS both thought-provoking and memorable.

I found MAUS to be two stories presented as one. The main storyline is the story of his father Vladeck’s plight as a Jew living in Poland before and during World War II (just before he and his wife Anja are sent to Auschwitz). The second storyline is about the author’s relationship with his father, which is revealed as the son presses his father to talk about surviving the Holocaust. While the story of Spiegelman’s parents is certainly compelling, the metaphorical manner in which it is illustrated is what sticks. Spiegelman uses animals to represent groups/races of people in a way that reminds me of Orwell’s “Animal Farm”. Jews are presented as mice … meek pests/vermin that are easy to kill. Nazis/Germans are depicted as rather vicious cats (that kill the vermin) and Poles are shown as pigs (perhaps a reference to the fact that many Poles betrayed Jews in their country to the Nazis … in other words, swine). I found graphic metaphors ingenious as they add a significant emotional tone to the story being told. The Holocaust storyline comprises the bulk of the book’s illustrations with the father/son moments serving as bridges in between events. As we come to understand the suffering of Spiegelman’s parents, we learn that his mother (Anja) killed herself in 1968, leaving a large void in his life. There is an obvious yearning for Spiegelman to learn more about his mother through his father, yet the task proves to be challenging.

On the surface, the concept of a Holocaust-related “comic book” seems awkward, but I found MAUS to be a magnificent and poignant read. It is also hard to put down … I read the entire book without stopping in short order. I would highly recommend MAUS (and MAUS II, for that matter) for providing a provocatively unique perspective of the Holocaust. This series intrigued me enough to pick up a copy of “MetaMaus”, which meticulously (and exhaustively) explores the author’s motive for MAUS/MAUS II, as well as detailing more of his parents’ lives.

Back in the 1980s when I was working as a Junior Editor at Arbor House in Manhattan, this manuscript came in in a box as all manuscripts did back in those days and when I read it I recommended that we publish the book. Our publisher however as an American Jew could not handle the subject matter and did not listen to my recommendation. Of course, the book went on to win a Pulitzer Prize and now all these years later I have my own copy which I am enjoying very much. As a young editor, I read so many books coming in (as many as ten to twenty a day) and I was expected to know after the first three pages whether the book was worthy of hard cover publication, and I was right and this book deserved a Pulitzer and I'm so happy to have a copy. Classic and important work.

1977... the year so much changed

These days you can ask anyone about Star Wars—or at least anyone minimally plugged into pop culture—and they'll recognize it as the corporate-sized media juggernaut it is. More than just a series of movies, the enduring influence of Star Wars can be seen nearly everywhere. And since Disney acquired the rights, "May the Force be with you," might as well live on forever. But it wasn't that long ago when a still mostly unknown filmmaker by the name of George Lucas invested his time, talent and treasure on a million-to-one financial gamble.

Empire Building by Garry Jenkins tells of the humble beginnings of a galaxy from a long time ago, and far, far away. The experience is riveting, and I recommend it.

A very interesting work

This book was kind of a guilty pleasure for me. On one hand, I have been a huge Star Wars fan (pretty much since birth) and I couldn't put this book down due to the behind-the-scenes story of the struggle Lucas had to go through to put his grand vision on the screen. All of the adversity and drama that is very well described in this book would make a very good story for a decent fiction writer, but knowing that all of the seedy hollywood politics actually did happen makes the "making of the movie" story almost as powerful as the film itself. The guilty part of the pleasure is that I almost felt like I was betraying George Lucas by reading the book. Jenkins seems to write much of the story from Star Wars/Empire producer Gary Kurtz's point of view. This would not be a problem if Kurtz didn't come off like a bitter ex-producer who got booted from the set for conflicting with Lucas' demands. Many passages allude to Kurtz being the one who saved the production, and since Kurtz did have much input in the book, it looks like Jenkins is trying to downplay Lucas' involvment while trying to over-emphasize his buddy Kurtz's involvement. Even while feeling this, I could not put the book down. A must have for all Star Wars fans.

Want to know why Episode 1sucked compard to classic SW?

This book is a great behind the scences look at how Star Wars Trilogy was made. It shows how George Lucas bulit an empire from a film that the stuidos were sure would flop. It describes how Lucas had to fight for every penny and try to keep the studio excs from butchering his film. However behind the scences it also showed how Lawarnce Kasdan, the producer, and the special effects wizards at ILM helped shape and refine Luca's vison. I love Star Wars BUT after reading this book and watching the embarrasment that was Episode 1 I no longer view George Lucas as the god that can do no wrong. I came away feeling cheated after seeing Episode 1. It was a lame movie. The villians were weak, the plot moved so s l o w ly, there was almost no Wars in Star Wars. The best villian Darth Maul gets little screen time and a big five lines. (The imperial officers had more lines in the classics) and Lucas directed this? What went wrong? Did he go senile? The I found this book and the answers to all my questions. The movie Lucas had the least amount of input (Empire Strikes Back) is considered by most the best SW film in terms of charecter delvepoment, humor, plot, etc. He hated how it was shot and kicked Kasdan out and picked a director that was bascialy his puppet, thus the subpar ework filled Return of the Jedi. This book is a great look at how SW affected Lucas, Kasdan, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, and Mark Hamill, and why did the acting in Ep 1 not even make it the level of the previous films? Lucas might be a visonary but as a direcor of actors he is subpar at best and this book will tell you why. Classic SW moments (i won't give it away after all buy the book)Lucas did not even and sometimes reisted thier inclusion into the films. There was no grey side (Fett, jabba, Solo) in Episode One, just black and white, good and evil. Also please in the next SW film give the bad guys more screen time, they had none in ep 1. and those weak droids make stromtroopers seem like snipers. The myth of Star Wars is George Lucas bulit it by himself, but as you will see from the book if it was not for a top fox exuctive, Lawarnce Kasdan, some freaked out 70's band of geek boys obsessed with models and computers, numerous rewrites to inject some humor (real adult humor not Jar *grinding of teeth* Jar Binks, the force would not be with us today.

About the Author
Skip Downing is an international consultant in the field of faculty development and student success strategies. Dr. Downing has earned degrees from Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Santa Monica, and Carnegie Mellon University. Make sure you find out if you need CD and ACCESS CODE

Bought this book because it is a textbook I needed, and the book did not come with the cd or the access code which has been extremely frustrating. To purchase a separate access code now costs half of what the textbook costs.

Scummy Publishers. Lame self-help crap.

The people who run Cengage & Mindtap are evil demon people who want every single penny from you. Usually when you use this book you will also need to buy a $60 sub to an online service called Mindtap, basically online power-points because the professor teaching the course was too lazy to write their own material. Therefore you pay new prices even when you buy used.

Also, the book itself is classic College 101 BS material. Become accountable! Be a better person! Do your homework! Thanks, I really needed to pay for a $150 class + Book + Mindtap TM subscription just for you to tell me that.

Shove off, Skip. Hope you have fun with the money. Buy yourself a Porsche or something, Mr. Successful Pyramid-Scheme-Man.

the transition to college

Overall, I feel that this book is filled with a lot of detailed information intended to help the beginning college student, and perhaps others, stay “on course”. There is also an overall structure in various ways and from a variety of perspectives to help people direct their lives. The intent is to help the student see alternatives, including alternative points of view, that would be helpful for her or him. I think that Prof. Downing has done an excellent job and that students who take the time to engage with this material will benefit. We all sometimes face difficult transitions, and the transition to adulthood, much of which is captured in the rituals and culture of higher education, is one of the most difficult transitions we humans face. I read this book for some insights to help students I encounter, but I also thought that, I myself, have benefitted a little from reading the book. I think Prof. Downing provides a great deal of help to pass classes, and to graduate, and to organize one’s thinking toward adult life, adult responsibilities and adult motivations. There is a complete focus on finding a mentality for growth and creativity, and for balance in one’s life. Most of life we cannot control, and our actions are in a context of risk, ambiguity and uncertainty. But we do have control over many aspects of our inner lives, our reactions, and our recognition of the potential consequences of our own actions. Prof. Downing is very concerned with this, and with getting us to see that there are often positive, personal choices that we can make to avoid feeling like a victim of circumstances. I strongly recommend this book to awaken oneself to a growth mindset, that amounts to much more than just getting good grades or graduating (although there is ample material in the book that addresses this). I think we can all feel lost in our lives, even when we have achieved a fair measure of success, so a book to stay “on course” can be helpful to a larger audience than just students.

Intrigue, danger and romance occur when two head strong characters collide in the, the Barrister's Bed.

James Devlin was the illegitimate son of a Duke -shamed and unacknowledged except for the short times when his father spent time with him at Wyndmoor Manor. But when his father dies he discovers he is legitimate and the next duke! When finds out that Wyndmoor Manor has been sold (along with his memories of his father), he is determined to buy it back only to discover that a tempestuous and lovely young widow in residence. Her name is Bella and she also bought the Manor, but three days earlier. Unfortunately, both of them have been swindled! As a barrister James wants to win and he wants the Manor not matter the cost. He is willing to seduce and manipulate to get it. But Bella's beauty and fiery spirit pull at his hardened, womanizing heart and when her past threatens her he must decide if a cold estate is more important than the love of a vibrant woman.

This book starts out a bit slow, even as both main characters battle for the Manor. I initially felt disappointed in the hero. He was cold, calculating and seemed willing to use any means to get `his' Manor back. Instead of deciding to seduce Bella I wished he had offered her an alternative place of residence or paid her for the Manor so she could purchase another place. Instead he sees her as an obstacle. On the other hand, Bella is extremely sympathetic. She has lived many years under the controlling and abusive thumb of her dead husband. Now she is finally free. I reveled in her endurance and spirit and enjoyed how she refused to be intimidated by another man. As the book progressed and James finally lets himself care for Bella, the relationship and storyline become vastly more absorbing. I also liked meeting the other barrister friends of James, especially the handsome Brent Stone who seems to have a shady double life and a secret heartbreak. I really would like to read his story!

This light, summer read is slow to start but soon becomes an entertaining jaunt filled with mystery and romance.

The second book in The Barrister series by Tina Gabrielle takes the reader on an adventure from the English country side to London.

James Devlin is a bastard...at least that's what he has thought his whole life. He has made a good life for himself as a barrister and doesn't miss the money or prestige that would have come with being a legitimate son of a duke. Then everything changes for James. He finds out that he is in fact the heir to the Duke of Blackwood and now that his father has passed he is to take control of the estates and everything else that he is entitled to as the new Duke. There is just one thing he really wants...Wyndmoor Manor. I really liked this character. His life is turned upside down, but he manages to move on and deal with everything with dignity. I loved how quickly and fiercely he comes to protect Bella and how his feelings for her change throughout the story. He really comes into his true self and in the course finds true love.

Bella Sinclair is a widow. After a terrible marriage she is finally free from her husband, Roger. She believes that everything is going to be better now that he is gone. After passing through and falling in love with the property she purchases Wyndmoor and plans to make it her forever home. She is shocked with the Duke of Blackwood comes knocking at her door and claiming to be the rightful owner of Wyndmoor. She knows that she will do whatever necessary to protect herself and her new home - even if that means taking on a duke. I loved Bella's spirit. She had let a man control and hurt her in the past, but won't again. She doesn't give into James and makes him fight for the property just as she is willing to fight.

These two characters have a lot of chemistry and are drawn to each other instantly. I loved the pull they feel for each other even as they are frustrated about the Manor and what is happening around them. When accidents start happening around the manor they both work to protect the other one, even though something happening to one or the other would mean the Manor would be free of one owner.

I loved the writing. The scenes move smoothly and the plot is well paced. Nothing feels rushed or too slow. I also loved the relationships - Bella and James, James and his barrister friends, Bella and her elderly servant Harriet, and Bella and Evelyn. Each of these relationships helps move the story along while giving insight into the characters and their motivation.

Ms. Gabrielle is a rising talent in the historical romance genre. I'm looking forward to reading more by her in the future.

Emotions run high when two people whose lives have experienced major upheavals end up at Wyndmoor Manor, each with a deed showing proof of ownership.

The widow Bella Sinclair fell in love with Wyndmoor Manor on sight. She feels safe there where tenant rents will make it possible for her to maintain the manor, live independently, and fulfill her long-denied desire to write social and political articles for publication. She and Harriet, her old companion, will no longer be subjected to threats and humiliations. At Wyndmoor Manor, they can live quietly and free while Bella uses her talents, makes her own decisions, and becomes her own person.

Before she even has time to unpack, along comes James Devlin, a successful barrister, who has already proven his ability to succeed by winning most of his court cases. However, he's just had a dukedom dumped in his lap. Now he must prove himself in a totally new realm--not easy with his history. Wyndmoor Manor is the one place he'd felt he belonged in his troubled childhood, it feels like home.

James Devlin loves women and he loves a challenge. However, the alluring Bella, with her auburn hair, big green eyes, full lips, and voluptuous curves, gives him an run for his money Her determination, intelligence, and more than a little desperation make her a formidable opponent.

Bella treasures her new freedom as a widow. However, James Devlin's seductive, gentle, enticing kiss ignites her body for the first time ever with a primal yearning. She responds instinctively without reserve leaving them both off-balance. She knows his motives are questionable but her body does not care. Bella is in new territory; her late-husband Roger's kisses had always been cruel and demanding, nothing like the Barrister's kiss.

James' law partners arrive at Wyndmoor Manor and offer their views on the ownership struggle. Brent Stone mesmerizes Bella. He is like a flesh-and-blood Michelangelo creation, while Anthony Stevens has hard, cold eyes that make Bella feel like she needs to cross herself. The married partner Jack Harding and his wife Evie show Bella a totally different kind of marriage than she had known with Roger. Moreover, she and Evie seem to be kindred spirits.

Other secondary characters that impact their lives are James' dowager grandmother whose main focus in life is being among the elite in the Ton; his half brother Gregory, a drunken wastrel, gambler, and opium addict; Bella's late husband's twin, Rupert who had been Roger's partner in illegal business that had been left unfinished due to Roger's untimely death. With these characters, two of the deadly sins--greed and jealousy--rear their ugly heads and put the struggle for who owns Wyndmoor Manor on the back burner.

James' motives shift as he tries to protect Bella. She is unsure what to think of this. Nobody had ever been concerned for her safety before. Bella soon becomes James' protector when he is wounded. Life becomes more precious. Their hot, breathtaking lovemaking sends the story spiraling up to ecstasy--ah!

Tina Gabrielle's eloquent writing style lures the reader in with well-developed characters; conflicts, some humorous and others that are spine-tingling; back stories that intrigue, and vivid descriptions of settings that give one a sense of time and place that assails the senses. She subtly plants that seed of love and nurtures it through all the hero and heroine's hang-ups and hurts; through life-threatening, nail-biting conflicts and tends it through the tender sprouting stage of love to the sensual, sizzling love that brings them to their happy-ever-after.

In The Barrister's Bed is a tantalizing tale.

pastry but no croissants or Danishes
By no cheese Danish here
As a fairly experienced home cook I was happy to learn a few things here I had never tried when making pies and tarts. However, if you want to make your own cheese Danish, this is not the book. It seems that these are sold as "pastries" everyday but are not. Apparently pudding and fruit filled tarts and cream puffs are pastries. Cronies, donuts and Danishes are not. I assume they are bread. Now my search continues.
