About the Author
Growing up a TV junkie, AE Jones oftentimes rewrote endings of episodes in her head when she didn’t like the outcome. She immersed herself in sci-fi and soap operas. But when Buffy hit the little screen, she knew her true love was paranormal. Now she spends her nights weaving stories about all variation of supernatural—their angst and their humor. After all, life is about both…whether you sport fangs or not. AE won RWA’s 2013 Golden Heart Award for her paranormal manuscript, Mind Sweeper. Mind Sweeper was also a 2015 RWA RITA finalist for both First Book and Paranormal Romance. AE lives in Ohio surrounded by her eclectic family and friends who in no way resemble any characters in her books. Honest. Now her two cats are another story altogether.

Tying an unhappy bow around book 5
By The Truth
This series really started so strong! I loved the cast of characters, even as the collection grew. I felt that the larger mystery tied in well with the paranormal genre. Book 3 was a let down for me - I never really bought into the whole Griffin thing - A guy with the nose like crystal ball who is never around when it's needed for something other than sniffing Kyle. I also started to really dislike the author's use of "OMG! how did you sneak up right behind my when I was divulging a critical plot element?" This happens like 5 times in the series and it felt way to Nickelodeon. Lastly I like a little darkness in my story - this one tied up way to hunky dory for my taste.

When will you fall for me?
By Amazon Customer
I love this series from A E Jones: plenty of action, great support characters with good repartee and a bit of loving that nearly made it to love triangle status, but tactfully escaped by the skin of the teeth. Excellent.

The first half of the series was slow but managed to pick up pace just before it it took a flying leap to the 'finish later ' shelf.

The story continues on with the tumultuous life of Kyle and, which ever way you see it, could be considered good or bad. Nevertheless the story soldiers on with epiphanies and new resolutions.

What makes this novel stand out for me, aside from the excellent storytelling, is the fine grasp of both hip colloquialisms and flowing dialogue. The ultimate appeal and success, is that by the end the author injects both new characters and new material that causes the reader want to keep going and launch into the next book.

And wait for it no cliffhanger! For solid lover's of Chloe Neill, Karen Chance, Laurell K Hamilton and Charlaine Harris.

Sex quotient: absolutely no problem with commuter worthiness.

This series just keeps getting better
By Bryn Wills
That was fun! I just finished Sentinel Lost and loved it. Want more, of course, but am very satisfied with how this particular book played out in the end. Love the characters, the "didn't see that coming..nor that...not even that" aspects, and especially loved A.E. Jones' writing. Don't want to give ANYTHING away, so I'm ending my review right here... other than to highly recommend your reading this book! Enjoy!

It was quiet in the lamplit room, the only sound the occasional rustle of paper as the man seated on one side of the vast antique desk went through the contents of the file in front of him. He was unhurried, his black brows drawn together in a faint frown as he closely scanned each printed sheet in turn, then laid it aside.

The grey-haired man sitting opposite watched him, under the guise of studying his fingernails. It was over two years since they'd had cause to meet face to face, and there was no longer even a trace of the boy he had once known in the dark, incisive face bent over the documents he had brought for him only a few hours ago.

He had been welcomed with the usual courtesy, conducted by the maggiodomo to the room where he would spend the night, after which he had dined alone with his host. The food had been delicious, and on the surface, it was all charm and relaxation, but he was under no illusions.

The real business of his visit was being conducted right here and now.

Eventually, his reading concluded, the younger man looked up and gave a brief nod of approbation.

'You have been more than thorough, Signor Massimo. I commend you. An entire life laid out for my inspection in every detail. Invaluable.'

His swift smile momentarily softened the hard lines of his mouth and brought an added glint to eyes that were almost the colour of amber, flecked with gold.

It was a proud face with a high-bridged nose, classically moulded cheekbones and an uncompromising chin.

But now too austere to be truly handsome, thought Guido Massimo as he inclined his head in polite acknowledgement. And too coldly purposeful. The face of a stranger.

He waited as the other took the photograph which was the last object remaining in the file and studied it. The girl looking back at him was blonde, her pale hair hanging in a sleek silken curtain almost to her shoulders. Her face was oval with creamy skin, her eyes a clear grey. Her nose was short and straight, her chin firm and the delicately curved lips were parted in a slight but confident smile.

'When was this taken?'

'A few months ago on the occasion of her engagement,' Signor Massimo returned. 'It appeared in a magazine published in the county where she was brought up.' He allowed himself a discreet twinkle. 'Che bella ragazza.'

His comment received only an indifferent shrug.

'This cool Anglo-Saxon type has no appeal for me.' The other's mouth twisted. 'Which, under the circumstances, must be deemed fortunate.' He paused. 'But no doubt her fi-danzato will have a very different view and will pay the required price for her safe return. Or we must hope so.'

Signor Massimo murmured politely, keeping his expression impassive. He was well aware that his host's tastes in women favoured the elegantly voluptuous, but it would have been unwise even to hint that he possessed such knowledge.

The younger man returned the photograph to the file with an air of finality and leaned back in his chair, frowning again. 'The wedding is scheduled to take place in two months, which means there is no time to be lost. However it will make the resolution of the matter increasingly urgent, which is all to the good.'

Almost absently he began to play with the heavy gold signet ring he wore on his right hand. 'Tell me more about this television company she works for. You say it makes programmes for various arts channels?'

'And with some success. She is currently a researcher with a desire to move into production, but it seems marriage will end such hopes. As I have mentioned in the report, her fi-danzato has already made it clear that he does not want his wife to work.'

The other nodded. 'And this has a caused—a certain amount of friction?'

'It seems so. As yet unresolved.'

'Ambition versus love.' The cool, deep voice spoke more softly. Became almost meditative. 'Which will she choose, I wonder, when serious temptation is offered.' He paused. 'Are you a betting man, Signor Massimo?'

'On rare occasions only.'

'And where would you place your money in such a situation.'

Guido Massimo gave a faint shrug. 'A girl soon to be a bride. She will wish to please her groom, I think.'

'You are unexpectedly romantic, signore. But I feel you are mistaken.' His smile was a curl of the lips. 'Because I know the bait that will bring her to me.'

'If I can be of further assistance…' the older man began, but was stopped by a raised hand.

'I am grateful but I believe that from here it is better for your involvement to cease. What happens should be my responsibility, and I would not wish you to have to answer any awkward questions, so the less you know the better.'

His tone became brisker. 'Leaving just the matter of your fee to be dealt with.' He opened a drawer in the desk, extracted a bulky envelope and handed it over. 'For the same reasons, we agreed this transaction should be on a cash basis. You may of course count it.'

'I would not dream of such a thing.'

'As you please.' The other paused. 'Which means I have only to thank you once more and wish you a peaceful night. We shall meet tomorrow at breakfast.'

Guido Massimo rose, made a slight bow and walked to the door where he hesitated. 'I must ask this. You are—determined? Quite sure there is no other course? The girl, after all, is an innocent party in all this. Does she deserve to be treated in such a way? I only enquire, you understand.'

'I comprehend perfectly. But you must not distress yourself, my friend. Once I have what I want, your bella ragazza will be returned as good as new to her future husband.' He added unsmilingly, 'That is, of course, if she still wants him.' He rose too, tall and lithe, his hands resting on his lean hips. 'There is no necessity to pity her, I assure you.'

But I shall do so, just the same, Guido Massimo thought as he left the room. And I shall also pity the boy I once knew, and remember him in my prayers.

'Darling,' said Jeremy. 'Please tell me this is some sort of joke.'

Madeleine Lang put down her glass and stared at him across the table in the wine bar in genuine perplexity. 'A joke?' she repeated. 'I'm talking about work here and perfectly serious. Why on earth would I be joking?'

Jeremy gave a hollow laugh. 'Oh, just a small matter of a wedding for over two hundred guests to arrange. Or will that be put on hold while you roam round Italy on some wild goose chase?'

Madeleine bit her lip. 'Hardly on hold, with your stepmother so firmly in control. I doubt if my absence will even be noticed.'

There was an edgy pause, then Jeremy reached across and took her hand, his expression rueful. 'Sweetheart, I know Esme can be rather managing.'

Madeleine sighed. 'Jeremy, that's putting it mildly, and you know it. Everything I want and suggest is just—brushed aside. I don't even feel that it is our wedding any more.'

'I'm sorry, Maddie.' Jeremy's tone was coaxing. 'But—it's a really big deal for the family, and Dad wants everything to be perfect. Times may be hard but Sylvester and Co is still riding high. That kind of thing.'

'If it only was a family affair,' Madeleine muttered. She sat back, reaching for her glass. 'For one thing, where have all those guests come from? I've never even heard of two thirds of them.'

'Clients of the bank, business associates, old friends of my father.' Jeremy sounded rueful. 'But believe me it could have been very much worse. What we have now is the shortlist.'

'I don't find that particularly reassuring,' Madeleine told him candidly.

'Oh, come on, it's not that bad.' Jeremy paused awkwardly. 'But it could be if you persist with this Italian nonsense.'

She said slowly, 'I can't believe you just said that. First it was a joke, now it's nonsense. Jeremy, we're talking about my work here.'

'It used to be your work.' His tone was defensive. 'But very soon now it won't be, so what is the point in your shooting off across Europe in pursuit of some musician no-one's ever heard of?'

'But people have heard of her,' Madeleine fired back. 'Flo-ria Bartrando was said to be the most wonderful young soprano of her generation. It was predicted she was going to be another Maria Callas, and then suddenly, with no explanation, she dropped off the edge of the world. It's been a major mystery for thirty years and now I have the chance to solve it.'

'But why you?' Frowning, he refilled their glasses. 'You're not the only researcher on the team.'

'Apparently the Italian contacts saw the programme on Hadley Cunningham's last symphony,' Madeleine said lev-elly. 'The one no-one knew he'd written. I did most of the research on that. So Todd offered me this.'

Jeremy's frown deepened. 'Frankly, darling, when you said you had something to tell me I assumed you meant that you'd handed in your notice as we'd agreed.'

'I said I'd think about it,' Madeleine said quietly. 'Having done so, I'm not walking away from a job I love without good reason.' She added, 'But I have booked out our honeymoon weeks as holiday.'

Jeremy stared at her as if she'd grown an extra head. 'And I'm supposed to be grateful for that?' he asked sarcastically.

'Well, you should be,' she said cheerfully. 'After all, you'd hardly want to go to the Maldives on your own.'

'I'm sorry, but I don't find this particularly amusing.'

'And nor do I. In fact I'm perfectly serious.' She gave him a rueful look. 'Jeremy, please try to understand.'

'What's to understand?' His shrug was almost petulant. 'Clearly finding material for minority interest television channels matters more to you than being my wife.'

'And now you're talking nonsense,' Madeleine retorted hotly. 'It's the twenty-first century, for heaven's sake, and most women combine marriage and a career these days in case you hadn't noticed.'

'Well, I want you to regard our marriage as your career,' Jeremy said, his lips tightening. 'I don't think you appreciate how hectic our social life will become, or how much entertaining we'll have to do. And I mean full blown dinner parties, not you rushing in at the last moment with a takeaway.'

She gasped. 'Is that how you see me? As some ditsy incompetent?'

'No, my sweet, of course not.' He was back in placatory mode. 'It's just that we're not sure you realise how much you'll be taking on, or how stressful you might find it.'

Maddie sat back in her seat, and gave him a straight look. 'I presume that's not the royal "we" you were using there? That you're quoting your father?'

'Naturally it's been discussed.'

She bit her lip. 'Jeremy—the wedding may have got away from us, but this is our marriage, and you must make him see that.' Her voice deepened in intensity. 'I have no intention of letting you down, or failing to provide you with the support you need in your career. All I ask is that you do the same for me. Is that so very hard?'

There was a silence, then he said, 'I suppose—not when you put it like that. I'll talk to Dad again. Which reminds me…' He glanced at his watch and pulled a face. 'I should be going. I'm due to meet him with some people at The Ivy.'

He paused. 'Sure you won't come with me? It's no problem.'

Maddie got to her feet, forcing a smile as she indicated the slim-fitting jeans and white shirt she was wearing. 'Except I'm not dressed for dinner at a top restaurant, which might create its own difficulty. Another time, darling.'

'So what will you do?' He sounded anxious.

She shrugged on her navy and white checked jacket and reached for her canvas shoulder bag. 'Oh—have a girlie night in, washing my hair, giving myself a manicure.'

And I have just told my fiance, the man I love, my first deliberate lie. Because actually, I'm going back to the office to do some more work on Floria Bartrando, but I doubt it would be politic to say so at this juncture.

Jeremy pulled her to him and kissed her. 'We mustn't fight,' he muttered. 'We can work things out. I know it.'

'Yes,' she said. 'Of course we can.' And kissed him back.

Outside the wine bar, she watched him hail a cab, then waved goodbye before beginning to walk slowly back towards the street where the Athene television production company was based.

She supposed that the recent confrontation had been inevitable, but knowing that made it no easier to handle. Somehow, she had to convince Jeremy that she could succeed as a working wife, a task handicapped from the outset by his father's forthright and openly expressed opinions to the contrary.

Maddie had known the Sylvesters pretty much all her life. Beth Sylvester, an old school friend of her mother, had been her godmother, and, as a child, Maddie had spent part of every summer at Fallowdene, the Sylvesters' big country house.

It had always seemed idyllic to her, but in retrospect she could see there'd been undercurrents which she'd been too young to pick up.

But somehow she'd known instinctively from the first that while her godmother would always be 'Aunt Beth', her husband would remain 'Mr Sylvester' and never become 'Uncle Nigel'.

Fallowdene was not in itself a beautiful house, yet to Mad-die it had always seemed an enchanted place, especially when Jeremy, the Sylvesters' only son, seven years her senior and light years older in every way, was there to be shadowed adoringly.

But she'd never allowed him to get away with any implication that they'd been childhood sweethearts.

'Arrant nonsense,' she'd teased, the first time it was mentioned. 'You thought I was a total pain in the neck, and went out of your way to ignore me.'

'But I've made up for it since,' he'd whispered, drawing her close. 'Admit it.'

Yet her most abiding memories were not of Jeremy at all, even though her initial crush had lasted well into her early teens.

What she recalled very vividly was the way the atmosphere of the house underwent a subtle change when Nigel Sylvester came home.

He was a man of just above medium height, who somehow gave the impression of being much taller. He had gone prematurely grey in his late twenties, or so Jeremy had told her, adding glumly, 'I hope it doesn't happen to me.'

Maddie had stroked his cheek, smiling. 'You'd look extremely distinguished.'

But if she was totally honest, she'd always found Nigel Sylvester's silver hair, which he wore slightly longer than was fashionable and swept straight back from his forehead, to be in odd and disturbing contrast to his curiously smooth, unlined face, and dark brown heavy-lidded eyes.

Nor was it just his appearance that used to unnerve her. His standards were exacting, he missed nothing, and although she had never heard him raise his voice in displeasure, Mad-die often thought it would have been better if he had shouted occasionally.

Such an annoying and idiotic heroine
By Jennifer L. Rinehart
You end up drugged, taken to a remote villa, your clothing removed, your jewelry and watch taken and wake up to a strange man who tells you that your freedom depends on the actions of your fiance's father, what would you think?

I think there is only one thing to think, that is that your kidnapper bears a grudge for your future father-in-law and that you are the unlucky pawn. Also, and I can't even believe this has to be stated, but here it is, you have been kidnapped.

For some strange reason, Maddie, the heroine of Count Valieri's Prisoner, doesn't get that. She repeatedly asks her captor if she's free to go, when she can leave (after the already stated action on the side of the future in-law) and if he is going to hold her against her will!

I know! Total mind bender! Get it through your silly head, Maddie, you have been KIDNAPPED. Abducted, shanghaied, snatched, held for ransom, etc., etc. But for Maddie, the concept seems to be beyond her ability to comprehend and this is where the story hits its first major snag.

The second most annoying thing about this book is Jeremy, Maddie's fiance. He is the worst kind of wimpy, whipped love interest. He won't even stay the night at her place after they have sex because he's worried what his daddy will think about him. Also, he's a bad lover and has allowed his stepmother to hijack the wedding. He never speaks up for Maddie, thinks her career as a journalist is a lame hobby and in pretty much every way possible is unlikable. I have a hard time understanding or respecting Maddie because she still wants to marry him and then after just a few hours around Andrea (aka Tall, Dark and Kidnapp-y) she's getting hot and bothered over another man, ugh, so flighty.

There's the requisite escape attempt, where Maddie has to be rescued from sexily torn clothing, wolves and trees, then they have to share a bed, he sleeps and she spends the whole night thinking about him. Oddly enough, taking her out of the castle and to the deserted cottage moved the story to a more believable place, but then Maddie started in with her maddeningly inane conversation and my interest faded away again.

All in all, I'd give this one a miss. There are better Craven novels to spend your time and money on.

Very Disappointed
By Tumbleweed
Ms. Craven is my favorite author. I always wait for her books to come out impatiently. But the plot in this book makes no sense. I agree with another reviewer. There was absolutely nothing interesting going on in the book for me. Usually I finish her books in one sitting. This one took me three days to finish!! :(

A Romance Junkie
By A Romance Junkie
I didn't care for this book at all, it was lame and I felt nothing for either of these to people. Maddie was a dumb doormat and he I can't even say much about because there was nothing there. He was even more boring then the doormat. In fact the only interesting people in this story was his mother "the opera singer" and her maid. It was a good story line and it could have gone places but these two people had no chemistry. The sex which only happened once was very one sided and it never happened again. I can't recommend this book, I gave it two stars and I over rated it.

WHAT IF SOMEONE ELSE WAS LIVING YOUR LIFE? SOMEONE OF THE OPPOSITE SEX...

Naia Underwood has a double in another version of her reality: a male double called Alaric. For almost seventeen years their lives have been identical but for one thing. Alaric's mother died following a train derailment two years ago - the same derailment that Naia’s mother survived. Now, Naia and Alaric are about to meet for the first time, with disastrous consequences for one of them...

A CRACK IN THE LINE is the first of a much-praised three novel sequence called The Aldous Lexicon. Volume two is SMALL ETERNITIES, volume three THE UNDERWOOD SEE. All three are also available as a single ebook, titled simply THE ALDOUS LEXICON.

Set in England - primarily in 2005 but ranging back and forth over many years - the trilogy was originally published in the US by Greenwillow and HarperTeen as The Withern Rise Trilogy. The ebook editions are revised versions of the print volumes, with some additional material and considerable re-editing.

A Crack in the Line was shortlisted for:
The Michael L. Printz Award (US)
The Georgia Peach Book Award (US)
The Lancashire Children's Book of the Year Award
The North-East of England Book Award
Recommended by The American Library Association as one of the year's most imaginative works of fiction.

'The book's conclusion, with its shocking metamorphosis, is sure to spark passionate discussion' (Booklist Starred Review, US)

'A spine-tingling thriller about parallel worlds. These are brilliant, thought-provoking novels about grief, responsibility and choice.' (The Times, London)

'A thought-provoking tale packed with mystery and suspense' (The Bookseller)

‘At once incisive and insightful, this criminally under-rated sequence represents some the strongest and most influential contributions to teenage fiction in recent years.’ (Jake Hope, Achuka)

'Emotionally wrenching yet satisfying' (Locus Magazine, US)

From School Library Journal
Grade 7-10–Alaric and Naia, both 16, have nearly identical lives in parallel worlds. Their parents, their house, and their circumstances are the same, with one major difference. Alaric's mother was killed in a train wreck, while Naia's mother survived. This story of alternate realities raises questions about how one's life might be changed forever by a certain turn of events. Alaric's home is dreary, dirty, and joyless and he misses his mother terribly. Naia lives in a world of light and privilege, with a clean, nicely furnished house and two loving parents. Through an association with a tree in the garden of their mutual home, the two teenagers travel back and forth from one world to the other. Working together, they try to make sense of what has happened to them and why. This is a very engaging tale at the outset. Lawrence vividly describes the same house under radically different circumstances and it becomes the focal point of the story. The dialogue contains some British slang and humor but is not difficult to follow. Ultimately Alaric and Naia trade places irreversibly, so that it is now Naia who is motherless. Readers may be left wondering what all this means, but will need to wait for the next volume in the series for a possible explanation.–Bruce Anne Shook, Mendenhall Middle School, Greensboro, NC

From Booklist
Gr. 8-12. On the second anniversary of his mother's death, Alaric Underwood still grieves, but by placing his hands on his mother's small, beautiful handcrafted replica of their home, he can transport himself to the alternate reality his mother now inhabits, where he meets Naia, a girl who could be his twin. As similar as the teens' worlds are, chance has forced change. Naia's house is warm, orderly, and cared for; Alaric's is cold, chaotic, and unkempt. Alaric has a batty Aunt Liney who is missing from Naia's life, and he works an M. C. Escher jigsaw puzzle, one of the author's references to the artist's work, which includes chapter numbering that both descends and climbs. The first in a trilogy, this complex story of choices, fate, and acceptance is demanding. Teens will want to reread it to piece together the clues and connections. Sequels will likely clear up some of the mysteries, such as that of the teens' ancestor Aldous, but rich sensory details and acerbic secondary characters bring the multiplying realities to life in spite of the unsolved puzzles. Give this to older readers who enjoyed Jane Yolen's The Wild Hunt (1995) or Neil Gaiman's Coraline (2002); the book's conclusion, with its shocking metamorphosis,^B is sure to spark passionate discussion. A suspenseful and engaging tale about alternate realities
By Teen Reads
Alaric is a sixteen-year-old boy who lives with his father in a crumbling old Victorian mansion that has been in his family for years. His mother died two years earlier in a horrific train crash, and his life has been going downhill since then. One snowy day, while alone, Alaric becomes reacquainted with the mansion he knows as his home. Once in a room that he has not sat in forever, he reaches for a familiar object. In a spilt second he is met with searing pain and the walls around him seem to come down. He opens his eyes to find himself lying in what appears to be the room he was just in, only it is cleaner and there is an unfamiliar girl standing before him.

Sixteen-year-old Naia and her parents live in a mansion that was named Withern Rise by one of her ancestors. Naia's mother faced a near-death experience two years ago, but Naia has tried her best to forget about it. It is certainly the farthest thought from her mind one snowy day when she finds a strange boy sitting on her living room floor. She can't figure out why he is there, why he is claiming it is really his house, or why he looks almost identical to her.

Can it be that two different realities exist at the same time --- one where Alaric lives with his father in Withern Rise and another where Naia is the only child to Alaric's father and the mother he lost two years ago? Alaric and Naia's discovery of each other brings about many startling events and realizations. Will Alaric and Naia be able to use each other to find out the truth about their own lives?

Michael Lawrence has written a suspenseful and engaging tale of two teenagers living the same life. There is even an alternate ending that gives another outlook to the story's conclusion, along with a surprising twist. This gripping novel --- which is the first volume of a trilogy --- cannot be put down until the very end.

Fascinating, thought provoking
By molly
"At sixteen, Alaric and Naia were as alike as any two people of opposite sexes can be...They shared a history, a lineage, memories, and had lived all their lives in the same house, Withern Rise, where they had occupied the same room, done the same things, more often than not had the same thoughts at the very same instant. And yet...

They had never met."

Interesting way to start a novel, isn't it?

Alaric and Naia are closer than siblings, closer than twins. They are alternate versions of the same person, living in alternate dimensions, and when their lives are suddenly and inexplicably brought together by a carved model known as Lexie's Folly, they are forced to rethink everything they know about the universe, everything they know about their families, and everything they know about themselves.

Alaric's mother, Alex Underwood, was involved in a terrible train crash when he was fourteen. She had a fifty-fifty chance of dying. She died.

Naia's mother, Alex Underwood, was also involved in a train crash when she was fourteen. This Alex also had a fifty-fifty chance of dying. She lived.

Because of this difference, Alaric and Naia's temperaments are drastically different. Naia is joking and carefree, much like her mother, while Alaric is sullen and withdrawn, living an almost speechless life with his father in their old, drafty house. The only spark of light is his aunt Liney, who comes as a sort of babysitter while his father is away, and Alaric rejects her as well, still bitter over his mother's death.

This book, by itself, feels incomplete. It is. The story is so connected with the sequels, SMALL ETERNITIES and THE UNDERWOOD SEE that they are inseparable; but together, they form a thought-provoking, intricate, and ultimately tragic story about choices and unalterable consequences - even in a world where choices and actions can be relived, over and over again.

One of The Best Post-1990s Novels
By Elliot Bowers
_____Take this from someone who's been reading science fiction and horror for over two decades: A CRACK IN THE LINE is one of the best novels to come along after the year 1990. It's not that the writing style stands out, and the characters aren't going to win any awards any time soon (other than the wacky aunt). What really and truly nails it for this novel is the plot and its attached themese. Highly original, highly captivating, and ever-developing, I have only found one other novel that ventured into similar territory. Hundreds of thousands of novels are published every year, but the sci-fi publishing industry has become so inbred that originality is dead. This writer has to be thanked for breaking conventions and being a standout.
_____Now, get a gander at this plot, and I challenge you to find a sci-fi novel in your local library or bookstore that even comes close: a kid with rotten luck in life has found a means of tapping into a parallel universe where there is a different version of himself living a much different life. Then comes this interplay between the main character and the other version--even disagreeing with this other self. It's a science fiction novel that asks some seriously hard-hitting questions. Is life fair? How would YOU have lived life differently? It's an entertaining read on its surface, but the deeper themes and high originality are things that will keep you coming back to read it again.
_____I'm not so much posting this review just as a review of a novel but also in regards to science fiction overall. Originality is winning big points with me nowadays, and A CRACK IN THE LINE has so much going for it in that regard. First up, it's a sci-fi novel that happens on Earth. It's not a time-travel story; it's a parallel universe story. Physicists have come up with evidence of parallel universes, but sci-fi writers have left this theme almost totally unexplored. All the sci-fi writers of the past twenty years have essentially been writing the same damned story: the (Federation or Empire) is under threat, and a group (star fleet captain or ragtag bunch of space-hippie explorers) finds a magical space gods that fix it all at the end. A CRACK IN THE LINE is not about aliens, space hippies, or the endless Luke Skywalker/Captain Kirk clones that have been in every novel put out by TOR, BAEN, or DEL RAY. No, A CRACK IN THE LINE is a science fiction novel that is about you and your life too--a life here on this planet, wondering if things could have been different.
_____Otherwise, if you want original science fiction... GOOD LUCK. Since the mega-media mergers of the early 1990, sci-fi has destroyed originality and has done almost nothing but publish Star Wars/Star Trek knock-offs that all have the same ending. Fantasy rules bookstores and movie theaters now, and sci-fi writers have become an inbred clannish group. (You want proof? Okay, Greg Bear the sci-fi writer is married to the daughter of Poul Anderson. Do a search for "science fiction" and "nepotism.) Instead of lambasting the very worst of post-1990s science fiction, I'm doing what I should have done years ago: pointing out sci-fi novels worth reading. There's almost nothing but formula-driven garbage in sci-fi being published nowadays, which is why fantasy is so powerful and romance out-sells sci-fi three to one. But since I still firmly believe that the sci-fi genre is so critical--especially in an age of genetic engineering, computer science, computerized prosthetics connected to brains, global warming, and more. For the sake of championing originality, I highly recommend Lawrence's A CRACK IN THE LINE.

"Deftly edited by Murray Kleiner, Handbook of Polygraph Testing is a scholarly collection of superbly presented essays by a variety of experts in the field which address the technical and psychological aspects of using polygraph or 'lie detector' testing today...fascinating compendium of studies and commentaries containing thought provoking information--especially for those who must increasingly use or come into contact with polygraph testing with respect to the contemporary governmental and corporate world of personnel screening, the demands of the legal system, and national security concerns." --MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW

There has not been that much written about research in the field of polygraph testing so this is a very welcome addition to the field. This book functions very well as an introduction to all aspects of the field as well as pointing to some of the frontiers of current research. - E-Streams

The structure of the book is very useful in that it balances very detailed explanations of the different tests and applications of polygraph testing with more theoretical investigations. - E-Streams

Overall, this is a very balanced, research-based book giving a wide variety of perspectives. I would recommend it for any library with a legal, criminology or law enforcement user community. Any psychology collection would also benefit from this book. - E-Streams

A classic mystery from Dick Francis, the champion of English storytellers. Champion jockey Sid Halley retired from racing when his hand was smashed in a fall. Now he works as a private detective - which is proving to be no less dangerous to life and limb. Recuperating from a bullet wound, Sid is asked by his father-in-law to look into some potentially shady activity involving Seabury racecourse and a ruthless property dealer. But the closer Sid gets to those determined to get their hands on Seabury, the more he finds himself in harm's way. The odds are against him - but that's exactly when Sid is at his best... Praise for Dick Francis: 'As a jockey, Dick Francis was unbeatable when he got into his stride. The same is true of his crime writing' Daily Mirror 'Dick Francis's fiction has a secret ingredient - his inimitable knack of grabbing the reader's attention on page one and holding it tight until the very end' Sunday Telegraph 'The narrative is brisk and gripping and the background researched with care . . . the entire story is a pleasure to relish' Scotsman 'Francis writing at his best' Evening Standard 'A regular winner . . . as smooth, swift and lean as ever' Sunday Express 'A super chiller and killer' New York Times Book Review Dick Francis was one of the most successful post-war National Hunt jockeys. On his retirement from the saddle, he published his autobiography, The Sport of Queens, before going on to write forty-three bestselling novels, a volume of short stories (Field of 13), and the biography of Lester Piggott. During his lifetime Dick Francis received many awards, amongst them the prestigious Crime Writers' Association's Cartier Diamond Dagger for his outstanding contribution to the genre, and three 'best novel' Edgar Allan Poe awards from The Mystery Writers of America. Odds Against: Dick Francis's first in his Sid Halley trilogy
By S. Warfield
Once I started reading Dick Francis's books, I couldn't stop with one or two. I hope to get through all of them, and now his son, Felix, is writing the mysteries since his father's death in 2010.

"Odds Against" is the first book in the Sid Halley trilogy. Sid Halley is a former jockey who lost the use of his hand when he had an accident during a race and a horse fell on him. He can no longer ride, so his father-in-law has taken him into his business as a private eye. Although Sid has been with the firm for two years, he has done little work but has observed and absorbed a lot. When he takes on the case of what's happening at Seabury racetrack when a shady property dealer appears on the scene, Sid risks life and limb to find out what is going on and to make sure Seabury is safe.

Francis's mysteries don't usually start off with a fast and furious beginning, but the story builds slowly and steadily with characters being introduced along the way. I can usually never figure out who the culprit is because Francis's writing makes it hard to guess. I like his style of writing that is not hurried and his charactersare so convincing they could be real people.

I recommend "Odds Against" for mystery readers and also for anyone interested in racehorses and horseracing. I always learn a little more about these subjects with each of Dick Francis's books I read.

Dick Francis Excels
By bibliophile
I've read every Dick Francis novel, and have never been disappointed by any story he wrote. The point is the mystery. And no one does it better than Francis. The research is detailed and perfect. Whether or not you also like horses has no bearing on the essence of the mystery. Every book is a page-turner...you just can't put the book down. If you also like horses, consider some stories to allow you a bonus as sooner or later the protagonist will come in contact with a steeplechase track...a jockey, an architect, an artist, a glass-blower, a wine merchant, a pilot, and even a toy-manufacturer. Simply be prepared for a lively, well-told mystery that will grab your attention from page one, and never let go until you're done....and then you're sorry to see the story conclude...but will be satisfied with that conclusion.

One crash too many
By Patto
Champion jumping jockey Sid Halley lost the use of one hand in a terrible fall - and with it his career. His marriage is over as well. When we meet him, he's been on the payroll of a detective agency for two years, and has just been shot in the gut by a small time crook. Loveless, crippled and injured, Sid has lost his enthusiasm for life.

Despite the failed marriage, Sid's father-in-law, retired Rear Admiral Charles Roland, still likes and respects Sid. Charles invites him to convalesce at his country home - and there unveils a challenge that he hopes will shake Sid out of his apathy.

A rich investor is plotting a hostile takeover of Seabury Racecourse, so it can be torn down and the land sold to developers. How would Sid like to save this grand old institution? He'll have to investigate its recent spell of bad luck that has everyone convinced the place is jinxed. Sabotage may be a factor.

Overnight Sid is transformed from a lethargic employee to a dynamo of detection. The resourceful, observant strategist who once won race after race is back.

If you're feeling a bit low or having a bad day, this is the book to read. Sid's resilience in the face of all kinds of loss is an inspiration.
