In the book's first half, he traces the subject from Olduvai Gorge to Silicon Valley, chronicling the shift from largely serendipitous discoveries to steady improvements as the result of a trial-and-error approach. Amato then looks at today's cutting-edge materials research, in which new materials that never existed in the natural world (e.g., artificial diamonds made out of peanut butter) are being developed by design. Writing in a lively, readable style that will appeal to the nonexpert, Amato manages to convey his enthusiasm for the subject. The references at the end are largely bibliographic essays of books and articles suggested for further reading on each topic. Few other books cover the history of the discipline so succinctly or engagingly. Materials Science Made Simple

Optimistic, easy-to-read, this charming history of the effect of new materials on society is filled with brilliant analogies. From the ceramics and bronze of prehistoric times through iron, steel, aluminum, polymers, transistors, silicon microchips and solid-state lasers, using personal interviews and a number of diagrams, Amato takes the reader on a joyful tour of what became Materials Science. This fount of good (but not excellent) explanations of many things is marred by a number of technical errors, and a Green Party stance on all of the current environmental issues. These flaws drag down what would have been a 5-star rating to 3 stars. The generally delicious writing style is marred by some problems with transitive verbs and a few slang expressions that may be hard to translate. Citation of sources is adequate.

A good overview of materials science

Ivan Amato's Stuff: The Materials the World is Made of is a good, workmanlike history and description of "materials science." Basically, materials science involves the fashioning of one material of nature into another; Amato imagines the first "materials scientist" as the caveman breaking rocks to make the first tools. Modern materials science, of course, is focused much more on atomic and sub-atomic levels, and Amato does a good job describing the state of the art today. Much of his writing is a bit "gee whiz", both over-written and over-enthusiastic for my tastes. He writes clearly and in a well-organized fashion, and I learned a fair amount from this book.

Nothing great

There's nothing terribly wrong with this book, but unfortunately it came out at about the same time as Phillip Ball's vastly superior "Made to Measure," which covered the same ground, at least as regards technology. Mr. Amato must be one of the few people on Earth who can be so awestruck by a technical conference -- he devotes at least an entire chapter to the thrill and wonder of a Materials Research Society meeting, which is, well, just a technical conference.

Great books, always checked out in library

These are really great books. The fact that each book is similar in story, but with different letters really helps those learning to read. My 2 1/2 year old knows that "little ? has a box" and that "I will fill my box." She's just remembering and copying right now, but eventually I know she will recognize those words. I was a children's librarian and we could never keep these books in the library, they were always checked out. I'm writing this review right now because I just found the WHOLE set for only $6.00 at a thrift shop. I couldn't believe it, I just snapped them up so fast and I will definitely keep them for her children, just as the other reviewer is.

Love the Set, Great for Pre-Schoolers and New Readers

I found this whole set at a thrift store and snapped it up for $9.00. I am so glad I did. These books are lovely. Things I especially liked:

(1) They have short narratives that are appropriate for a new reader to finish in a day, or to be read at bedtime by a caregiver.
(2) All the books follow the same pattern- "Little [letter]" fills a box, gentle, happy fun ensues, and then the words are reviewed at the end.
(3) The children featured are of many different colors and shades, but their books are simple and pleasant, and there are no stereotypes (that I have seen so far).
(4) The print is large and clear.
(5) The illustrations are clear and contain plenty of items for discussion for the pre-reader.

So far, we've only read four or five together, but my child likes them a lot. She can't read but these books provide a nice opportunity to gently reinforce letter sounds and sight words as we read books she enjoys. I'm not surprised that they are often checked out of the library.

Wonderful Series

We purchased this series to help my oldest learn to read. His Kindergarten teacher had told us he would never learn to read. The books are simply written and maintain the same plot line through all the books. The main character is always "Little (letter of the book." Each character has a box and decides to fill it with items that start with that letter. My oldest (now 8) reads on the 6th grade level with full comprehension. These books have done wonders in our house. I'm sorry to find that this series is now so hard to come by. I will definately hold on to these for my other children and then for their children.

If you have the slightest interest in London or the Fire Services around the world, then you must have this book in your library. It is a superb accounting of events, happenings, tragedies and euphoria from the point of view of 1 Officer through his lifes work of loving his job and the people he worked with and those in the communities that he served.

Dave has done a wonderful job with his story-telling abilities and I am really transported back to those times when I served with him in the B Division and its characters. Might ask the wife to pop this book into my box when I go so that I can enjoy it some more.

Beautiful David, well done, a triumph and a great read.!!!!

Under SS influence, however, membership in the organization became a preliminary apprenticeship for boys who would go on to be agents and soldiers in such SS-controlled units as the Gestapo and Death's Head Formations. The second, the Land Service, was created by HJ to encourage a return to farm living. But this battle to reverse "the flight from the land" took on military significance as the SS sought to use the Land Service to create "defense-peasants" who would provide a reliable food supply while defending the Fatherland.

The transformation of the Patrol and Land services, like that of the HJ generally, served SS ends at the same time that it secured for the Nazi regime the practical and ideological support of Germany's youth. By fostering in the Hitler Youth as "national community" of the young, the SS believed it could convert the popular movement of nazism into a protomilitary program to produce ideologically pure and committed soldiers and leaders who would keep the movement young and vital.

Bund Deutsche Madel

There have been a wide range of materials written on the nazi youth movement, but the vast majority tend to focus almost exclusively on the male Hilter Jugend. However, "Hitler's Children" has a fairly reasonable discussion of the Bund Deutsche Madel for girls as well. Among other things, it focusses on the girls' involvement in farming to help with the war effort.
Another main subject is the involvement of the SS with the Hitler youth for indoctrination and recruiting purposes, as well as espionage. There is some discussion of the leaders of the Hitler youth, although it does not really get extensively biographical. There is also a fair amount of coverage of the involvement of the Hitler youth in military activities (air raid fire brigades and digging anti-tank trenches towards the end). This book also has the only detailed discussion I have seen of the conflicts between the Hitler youth and the broad spectrum of other youth groups (communist, religious, middle class, etc.).

Great book!

The book itself is amazing! Adiga continues to build on the gritty, uncompromising realism that he's exploited for his other works, White Tiger and Between the Assassinations. It is a testament to his skill as a writer that he can describe a decaying Mumbai neighborhood extremely realistically while still injecting some feeling into it -- you can smell the sewage and the fried street food and still manage to make a connection with the locale and people Adiga writes about.
If you are new to India, I would recommend reading this book. Please do not read Shantaram. "Last Man in Tower" (or, even better, "Behind the Beautiful Forevers") is a much more realistic and uncompromising view of life in the city. It gives you an idea of the desperate lives people lead -- a very dramatic and emotionally charged experience, but with a healthy dose of the ridiculousness that reality always provides. Definitely recommend this book.

Very disappointed, definitely not worth buying new

Many of the examples and problems require access to the "data files" to follow along or complete. This book does NOT stand alone for instructional and learning purposes without those files. I purchased a NEW copy which did not come with access to the files. My instructor is not using the connect feature, for whatever reason, so I can't even buy access to the data on my own. Very disappointed, definitely not worth buying new.

"That cycle of consumption seems harmless enough, particularly since we live in a country where there are plenty of cheap goods to go around. But in her lively and terrifying book "Cheap: The High Cost of Discount Culture," Ellen Ruppel Shell pulls back the shimmery, seductive curtain of low-priced goods to reveal their insidious hidden costs. Those all-you-can-eat Red Lobster shrimps may very well have come from massive shrimp-farming spreads in Thailand, where they've been plumped up with antibiotics and possibly tended by maltreated migrant workers from Burma, Cambodia and Vietnam. The made-in-China toy train you bought your kid a few Christmases ago may have been sprayed with lead paint -- and the spraying itself may have been done by a child laborer, without the benefit of a protective mask.

"Cheap" is hardly a finger-waggling book. This isn't a screed designed to make us feel guilty for unknowingly benefiting from the hardships of workers in other parts of the world. And Shell -- who writes regularly for the Atlantic -- isn't talking about the shallowness of consumerism here; she makes it clear that she, like most of us, enjoys the hunt for a good deal. "I just finished Cheap: The High Cost of Discount Culture by Ellen Ruppel Shell and I am now both disgusted and totally freaked out. Ed is hosting a round table discussion on this one in the coming weeks which I am a part of so I won't go into too much detail here but really, Shell has done an outstanding job of bringing together all the facets of our need to buy cheap: food, clothing, furniture, etc. She doesn't just talk Wal-mart (in fact she doesn't talk much about Wal-mart at all) but she does talk IKEA and Red Lobster and China and the history of discount shopping in our country (Woolworths, etc.) which is truly fascinating. Beyond all the info though, Shell's writing style is utterly and completely top notch. Ellen Ruppel Shell is a correspondent for the Atlantic Monthly, and has written for The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, National Geographic, Time, Discover, Seed, and dozens of other national publications. She is the author, most recently, of The Hungry Gene, which was published in six languages, and is Associate Professor and Co-Director of the Knight Center for Science and Medical Journalism at Boston University.

Cheap is good. Free is even better.

My employer's top customers are major retailers. Despite the indictment of modern retail practices, (many of which are really old practices that have been refined and re-packaged) I actually still found this book to be an interesting read.

While there are parts of the book that I disagree with, Shell does succeeds in peeling back "some" of the layers of retail practices giving readers, of all backgrounds, a glimpse into this esoteric world. She also understands that we, the consumers, are part of the problem as without "demand" there would be reduced "supply" of the cheaper goods.

Shell's research regarding the psychology of retail customers is sound. I say this because part of my job actually involves implementing software tools, sold to retailers, that help them formulate promotional offerings that leverage the very psychological factors that Shell outlines in this book. These areas of the book are spot on.

Whether you work in retail or not - retailers touch our everyday lives. Love it or hate it, this book will cause you to pause around whether that last "great deal" really was a "bargain". Cheap might even change how you approach shopping.

I found it worth the read if you can get it "used" or "new with a heavy discount off the publsiher's $uggested retail price. Even better - borrow it from the library. :-)

Well Written but Narrow Focused

Ms Shell's background as a journalist comes through clearly and convincingly. Her writing style is very easy and enjoyable to read. Like a journalist, she spends most of the book describing the what and why of her subtitle, "The High Cost of Discount Culture." She explores how the consumer based economy has evolved over the past century from one of high service and quality products to a consumer driven run toward lower prices.

And like a journalist, she frames the resulting problems in a narrow focus. The book repetitively describes how discounting has caused workers to suffer a declining lifestyle. It also presents a consistent drumbeat of how unions have been prevented (perhaps unjustly) from maintaining a reasonable middle class standard of living.

The observations which she makes are thought provoking, and the book is worth reading for them alone. However, it left me wondering when it comes to the potential future for the global economy. There are many avenues left unexplored. Ms Shell does make an attempt at what we as consumers can do about it, but my impression is that her editor asked for it while her heart (and analysis) lagged. In her last chapter she briefly stated that solving the problem in the future lies in the choice each of us has to bypass the cheapest products. By favoring higher cost options, consumers would elevate living standards for workers around the world. It left me feeling like the train stopped before it reached the station.

What a surprise

This book was so surprisingly great. I really mean - it's not what I expected I guess. So much information. I loved the history part that was in almost every chapter. History of shopping/retail, very interesting. I highly recommend you read this book
