Louis F. Fourie CPA, CGA. MBA, MA For a dedicated car enthusiast like Louis Fourie the opportunity to join General Motors Overseas Operations in 1968 was the realisation of a dream. GM funded his university education and helped launch a rewarding career. His career provided opportunities to sample a wide variety of cars from Opel, Vauxhall and Holden and to gain hands-on knowledge of the automobile industry. He maintains contact with his GM contemporaries in their foreign postings and actively continues to gather material on GM worldwide. Further research convinced Louis that he has amassed the tools and detailed information to compile this comprehensive history. This three-volume work is the realisation of a goal to provide the most extensive and detailed history of GM's international automobiles ever written. Included is the complete collection of specifications of all GM's global automobiles to be found anywhere. Recording this GM history is also a gesture of appreciation to GM for the great career opportunities provided him. Louis continues to provide commentary and articles on automotive history including other automotive makes. He is actively involved with the Society of Automotive Historians where he is a director. His fascination with automobiles, the people and the industry will last a lifetime.

Powerful, Nearly Flawless Testimony

Forthright presentation of opinions without apology, but also without unnecessary or uncivilized attacks on those who disagree. Clear demonstration that existence, the cosmos, accurate history, true faith, and true religion are in fact necessarily Christocentric and cannot exist in any other state. There is one major problem: the author in some instances quotes and acknowledges St. John's gospel account describing Christ's death as having occurred before the spearing incident, but in other instances contradicts that account by representing the spearing as having occurred first, with no explanation given (hence only 4/5 stars given here) for changing the chronology of events. Historical and medical evidence seem to support John's account. It is to be hoped that the late author might have given an explanation elsewhere, such as in his sequel series "The Mortal Messiah", which I have not read. This is the only problem in an otherwise flawless work that deserves the attention of seekers, believers, doubters, opponents, scholars, historians, atheists, etc. All could learn something from Mr. McConkie.

Gary Chapman is very Christian based and this book is amazing IF you have a spouse that is willing to read the book and work on your marriage. There are a lot of great points in the book IF your spouse is not willing to work on the marriage that will reassure you that certain behavior and treatment is just not acceptable nor biblical. If you are reading this review, you are likely in tough times. God bless you on your journey.

I think it really was the last try!

I bought this book as a resource (among many others) to try to figure out how to save my troubled marriage. We were separated, and seriously on the rocks. I thought the book was inspiring and good. So I bought another copy and gave it to my wife, and it really struck a chord with her, even more than it had with me. I think it caused a turning point in the relationship, and although it's too soon to tell, it seems we're headed in the right direction now.

I purchased this book with high expectations that were unmet. The appropriate title should read "Its the wife's job to fix any and all problems". I do not recommend this book if you truly wish to give it one more try.

Ye'll be a bold scug to say no to the Primer

George Choundas and the folks at Writers Digest Books have published a handsomely bound book that should grace your pirate library. The look and feel of this book is absolutely fabulous. I'm sure some will wait for a soft cover edition to be printed but if you are one of them you will miss out on one of the joys of this book. The illustrations on the end pages and quality of the paper used for the interior pages make this hard bound first edition a must. If this book comes out in soft cover, it will be impossible to duplicate this fine workmanship.

As the subtitle of the Pirate Primer suggest, the book deals with the language of pirates. However, in discovering the language; you do learn something of the pirate life, both in fact and fiction. Choundas does not limit himself to the language of actual pirates but tackles the language as presented in works of literature, motion picture and television. In every case, the author states the word or phrase, provides a short definition and then provides an example of how the word or phrase is used. Choundas provides a citation for the examples which inform the reader of where they came from.

The book does not stop there. It also includes an entire chapter on the most famous pirate word uttered; that being "arrrgh!" It will come as no surprise to most pirate enthusiasts that are smart as paint that real pirates didn't say "arrrgh!"

The book also includes a lexicon of nautical terms that are sure to please anyone who has ever tried to read a seafaring book. You'll also get a section on food, drink, weapons and women.

If this isn't enough, you'll learn a hundreds of ways to greet your fellow pirate, bid the same adieu, and curse or compliment him/her.

And like a late night TV ad, I have to say "But wait, there's more." The book goes into great detail on how to form a pirate sentence, the use of adverbs and adjectives, positioning verbs, the use of transitive verbs, and other grammar rules as they apply to pirates Choundas actually covers the language as an English teacher would but the difference is you'll actually enjoy this textbook.

Did I mention the collection of Ship's Articles at the end of the book? Yep! You even get ship's articles with the Primer.

All in all, the entire book is a joy to read and joy to look at. Probably the only drawback is the lack of pictures. (That, and Choundas doesn't include any quotes from the movie The Black Swan) But let's face it; most of the pictures found in pirate books tend to be the same ones found everywhere else. In closing, not only will this book get you ready for the next Talk Like a Pirate Day, it will also make you want to rewatch all those old pirate movies and perhaps buy a pirate novel you haven't already read. The book will also act as a handy reference tool for the aspiring pirate author or acotr. Aye matey, This be your book if a pirate you must be.

Surprisingly Entertaining

A friend of mine (non-pirate) recommended this book, so I leafed through it without much expectation. Not being a fan of the genre, I expected to be none too interested. I was shocked to find that a couple of hours had passed when I looked back up! Really informative and, most importantly, fun to read. Great stuff. I've been recommending it highly to all my friends.

A Welcome Addition

This is a great volume for a writer to add to his library. As people have probably mentioned, it's separated into handy categories such as "Retorts" and "Malapropisms." My only caveat for a writer of historical fiction is to watch out for the fictional sources, which seem to be the majority. I'm not sure how authentic they are and I'm wary of that. I'd stick with sources like "General History of the Pyrates," Woodes Rogers, Exquemelin, and William Dampier. I feel safe with Defoe and Marryat, as they were experienced seamen writing for contemporaries.

Good Book for Basic Information

This is a good book filled with lots of basic information. If you are new to corrections, or are just learning about the subject area, then this is a good starting point. More advanced readers, such as those with extensive legal experience, will want a book with more punch. But as an introductory book this is a good one. I require it in my Correctional Law class.

A little book for the price, but filled with essential information for the CO, or any person working in the correctional environment. Easily readable with short quizzes at the end of each chapter. Gives a good review of the rights of prisoners and points of law. All the answers are in the back of the book. Many of the questions are found on the ACA certification tests.

Well packaged when delivered. The book was mandated reading for the Corporal's exam. Helpful information, it reads easily, though as one might expect, a little dry. Of course, I doubt that it was written for casual reading. But definitely a good book for supplemental law enforcement.

Profound and Powerful

In this deeply honest book, Ana Forrest shares details of a difficult and shattered life, not as a victim, but as a powerful woman who learned ways to heal herself and others. I couldn't put it down. I've practiced yoga for many years, and I really appreciate her willingness to find her own truth in yoga, even if that means questioning the status quo.

I intend to use the practices in this book as a primer for my current phase of life, which is navigating through my menopausal years, though anyone could read this book at any stage of life. For me, this book has come along at the perfect time, and I'm excited about using it as an ongoing resource.

Having taken one of her weekend workshops, I knew how powerful she would be, but she was also loving and funny, and her humor comes across in this book. As with all of her work, Fierce Medicine is top quality.

A honest and bold path to healing.

I purchased this book in search of strategies to help young adults who live with unresolved traumatic childhoods experiences. I also happen to be a yoga practitioner and have Ana's DVD's. However, I did not know the depth of Ana's healing perspective from the DVD's alone. This book is raw and "uncut." It speaks directly to the pain and suffering that is residue of stored abuse, neglect and other past hurts or transgressions. Ana is fierce in her writing so the book is aptly name. Her fierceness is complex, sometimes it is the fierceness of a lioness protecting her cubs and other times it is fierceness of a warrior in the face of death. The book provides heart-thumping, anxiety-producing and suspicous-arousing examples of Ana's life struggles. But so much more, the book offers description, explanation and strategies for solution to some of the most horrific experiences that humans may encounter. Ana teaches that assault on one's soul may lead to disconnection or shattering of spirit, but she offers a bounty of examples and invitations to move toward healing. My one caution about the book is that Ana, now around 50 I believe, packs her entire life's journey into this one book. While others may be able to walk through the path of healing "faster" because she has laid out such a clear path, the underlying message of the book is that healing is a lifetime process. So, you may want to read the book very slowly!! For those living in the depth of their darkness, this book offers a light at the end of the tunnel. It is not a fix-it book but an invitation to travel the dark parts of our life's journey with the instructions left by a guide who has traveled a similar path. This book provided me great insights and practical strategies for working with young adults. It also touched me personally in ways that I did not expect. One of Ana's missions in life is mending the hoop of the people. In this book she offers a flashlight to help us connect (not turn away) with others in the diffcult or dark spaces of life. I have developed a new curiousity about Kali after reading this book. Mostly, I feel a depth of gratitude to Ana for sharing her story and wisdom in this book.

About the Author
ROBERT HANSON is a Professor of Chemistry at St. Olaf College, in Northfield, Minnesota, USA, where he has been teaching since 1986. Trained as an organic chemist with Gilbert Stork at Columbia University, he shares a patent with 2001 Nobel Prize winner K.Barry Sharpless for the asymmetric epoxidation of allylic alcohols. His interest in thermodynamics goes back to early training at the California Institute of Technology, from which he got a B.S. degree in 1979. He spends his occasional moments of free time playing the violin in a community orchestra, piloting gliders and designing new Sudoku strategies. SUSAN GREEN has had the privilege of being both a student and a professor at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, USA where she was first introduced to the idea of teaching thermodynamics to first-year students. She trained as a physical chemist at the University of Minnesota studying the vibrational and electronic structure of small metal oxides as well as trying her hand at analytical chemistry. When she in not chasing after her two children with the help of her husband Hans, she can be found with a book.

That will perhaps be your reaction when you have studied thermodynamics using other introductory textbooks and thought to yourself at the end of the course "I really don't understand thermodynamics!"

This book is perhaps the most accessible thermodynamics text that also contains advanced ideas stemming from statistical thermodynamics. The entire basis of this book is built upon the statistical notation of probability and distribution which the first 2 chapters teaches us very clearly, before moving on to Boltzmans' Distribution and the various Laws of Thermodynamics. Every chapter is nicely written with clear examples and practice at the end of each chapters that do not deviate too much from the given examples but the section of "Brain teasers" allows the students to think about the applications beyond what they have currently learned (a nice touch from the authors).

I would highly recommend this book to any chemistry undergrads who are serious about becoming a chemist or even to a 1st or 2nd year grad student who need a refresher course in chemical thermodynamics or as a self study guide.

Shows the beauty of Thermodynamics

I am in love with this book. It is very easy to read and presents the material clearly. At the end of Chapter 12, Hanson ties everything back to the beginning beautifully. It was a climactic moment that felt like the ending of an epic adventure. This book showed me the astounding beauty of Thermodynamics and the world of Chemistry, and I plan to re-read it many times.

Pretty decent book

Here at St. Olaf (I'm a student here and I know Dr. Hanson) we chemistry majors use this book in the freshman spring course, and after that we only take one semester of physical chemistry. This is in part due to the fact, I think, that this book is a very solid intro to p-chem. It's certainly thorough. Dr. Hanson's writing style is engaging and eloquent, almost prose-like sometimes. This was actually a problem for me sometimes; it was difficult to go fishing through the text to find the info I wanted. But for a subject that is notoriously math and derivation-based, Dr. Hanson makes the content accessible, even for freshman with only one semester of calculus behind them.

However, as a caveat, there are MANY numerical errors, especially in the practice problem answers at the back of the book. Students, if you're working through problems and one of the book answers doesn't make sense, you aren't crazy. It's probably a typo! The second printing, which has a slightly glossy cover (first printing has a matte surface) is slightly better with fewer errors.
