From Publishers Weekly
In reading this novel of interconnected lives at the fringes of the music industry, Roxana Ortega freights her breathy voice with the moral confusion and sadness of Egan's disaffected, dismayed characters. A surprisingly supple instrument, Ortega's voice can drop to a gruff near-growl, and she craftily uses her range to convey the feeling of the bottom dropping out of the characters' lives. From Bookmarks Magazine
Critics loved Egan's newest novel, describing it as "audacious" and "extraordinary" (Philadelphia Inquirer). In the hands of a less-gifted writer, Egans's time-hopping narrative, unorthodox format, and motley cast of characters might have failed spectacularly. But it works here, primarily because each person shines within his or her individual chapter that offers a distinct voice and a fascinating backstory. A few reviewers mentioned the uneven nature of the chapters and the different stylistic experiments within them. Yet, hailed as "a frequently dazzling piece of layer-cake metafiction" (Entertainment Weekly), A Visit from the Goon Squad is a gutsy novel that succeeds on all levels.

Review

“Pitch perfect. . . . Darkly, rippingly funny. . . . Egan possesses a satirist’s eye and a romance novelist’s heart.”
—The New York Times Book Review

“At once intellectually stimulating and moving. . . . Like a masterful album, this one demands a replay.”
—The San Francisco Chronicle

“A new classic of American fiction.”
—Time

“Audacious, extraordinary.”
—Philadelphia Inquirer

“A spiky, shape-shifting new book. . . . A display of Egan’s extreme virtuosity.”
—The New York Times

“Wildly ambitious. . . . A tour de force. . . . Music is both subject and metaphor as Egan explores the mutability of time, destiny, and individual accountability post-technology.”
—O, The Oprah Magazine

“The smartest book you can get your hands on.”
—Los Angeles Times

“A rich and unforgettable novel about decay and endurance, about individuals in a world as it changes around them. . . . [Egan] is one of the most talented writers today.”
—The New York Review of Books

“It ends in the same place it starts, except that everything has changes, including you, the reader.”
—The New Republic

“Clever. Edgy. Groundbreaking. . . . Features characters about whom you come to care deeply as you watch them doing things they shouldn't, acting gloriously, infuriatingly human.”
—The Chicago Tribune

“Egan’s bravura fifth book samples from different eras (the glory days of punk; a slick, socially networked future) and styles (sly satire, moving tragedy, even PowerPoint) to explore the interplay between music and the rough rhythms of life.”
—Vogue

“Told with both affection and intensity, Goon Squad stands as a brilliant, all-absorbing novel for the beach, the woods, the air-conditioned apartment or the city stoop while wearing your iPod. Stay with this one.”
—Alan Cheuse, NPR’s All Things Considered

“Brilliant, inventive. . . . Emboldening. It cracks the world open afresh. . . . Would that Marcel Proust could receive [a copy]. It would blow his considerable mind. . . . Expect to inhale Egan’s A Visit From the Goon Squad. Then expect it to lodge in your cranium and your breastbone a good long while.”
—Cleveland Plain Dealer

“Frequently dazzling. . . . Egan’s expert flaying of human foibles has the compulsive allure of poking at a sore tooth: excruciating but exhilarating too.”
—Entertainment Weekly

“If Egan is our reward for living through the self-conscious gimmicks and ironic claptrap of postmodernism, then it was all worthwhile. . . . [A] triumph of technical bravado and tender sympathy. . . . Turn up the music, skip the college reunion and curl up with The Goon Squad instead.”
—The Washington Post

“A Visit From the Goon Squad should cement [Egan’s] reputation as one of America’s best, and least predictable, literary novelists.”
—Taylor Antrim, The Daily Beast

“Brilliantly structured. . . . We are pulled right in. . . . [Egan is] a boldly intellectual writer who is not afraid to apply her equally powerful intuitive skills to her ambitious projects.”
—Elle

“This is art at its best—as a bulwark against the goon, as it embodies everything at once.”
—Austin American Statesman

“An exhilarating, big-hearted, three-headed beast of a story. . . . We see ourselves in all of Egan’s characters because their stories of heartbreak and redemption seem so real they could be our own, regardless of the soundtrack. Such is the stuff great novels are made of.”
—Marie-Claire

“For all its postmodern flourishes, Goon Squad is as traditional as a Dickens novel. . . . [Egan’s] aim is not so much to explode traditional storytelling as to explore how it responds to the pressures and opportunities of the digital age.”
—Newsweek

“Egan has accomplished the tricky feat of using metafiction techniques without sacrificing old-fashioned story-telling. . . . A Visit from the Goon Squad has a circuitous structure that seems almost designed for our Internet rewired brains.”
—The Wall Street Journal

Kindle readers beware
By dr
Although the book, itself, was thought provoking and cleverly structured, I would warn anyone who elects to read the book digitally that the "powerpoint" chapters are extremely difficult to read on the Kindle. The print is so small and the back grounds so dark that even a magnifying glass was little help. The font size selection feature on the Kindle did not work on the "slides" for those chapters.

What happens between A and B?
By Susan Tunis
After reading a few chapters of Jennifer Egan's latest novel, A Visit from the Goon Squad, I'd determined it was really a collection of linked stories more than a novel. Reading further, however, I saw the larger themes and the cohesiveness of the whole. It is, indeed, a novel, and an excellent one at that!

The book opens sometime in the recent past, and kleptomaniac Sasha is recounting a story to her therapist. Her former boss, record producer Benny Salazar, is mentioned in passing. The next chapter takes place several years earlier. Here Sasha is still Benny's assistant, and now it is he that is the first person narrator. Benny's just trying to get through a visit with his pre-teen son while mentally stifling a lifetime's worth of shame. He reflects, in passing, on his old high school gang, and in the next chapter we're back in San Francisco, circa 1980, with them. Benny wants Alice, but Alice wants Scotty. Scotty wants Jocelyn, but teenage Jocelyn is seeing Lou, a record producer more than twice her age. Don't worry, he'll get his chapter.

They all get a chapter or two or three. The story skips back and forth in time and place. The voice moves from first person to third person and even to second. Asides or characters that seemed tangential become central. And eventually several themes become apparent. The main one is not even subtle, as the traversing between points A and B is referenced several times in various ways. Scotty at one point asks, "I want to know what happened between A and B." An aging rock star's comeback album is entitled A to B. Even the two sections of this book, which might have been labeled "Part I" and "Part II" in another book, are here "A" and "B."

Another theme is the passage of time. The novel, as I mentioned earlier, moves back and forth freely along the timeline of characters' lives. Ranging from around 1980 to some point in the 2020's, we see the (often ravaging) effects of time.

One character states, "Time's a goon, right? Isn't that the expression?"
Another responds, "I've never heard that. 'Time's a goon?'"
"Would you disagree?"
"No."

The episodes that Egan spotlights are all, in some way, transformative for her characters. And let's talk about those characters. Reviewers like me will often extol "richly-drawn characters." It isn't until I read a novel like this--with insight so deep that you feel you know everything it's possible to know about these people based on brief snippets of their lives--that it really hits home what characterization is all about. Egan is THAT good.

Plus, there's the language. Her prose is truly a pleasure to read, no matter how absurd or at times unpleasant the subject matter. Egan's pointillistic novel roams from the New York music scene to an African safari; from the affluent suburbs to life on the edge in Naples, Italy; from a dictator's palace to our collective future. And in careening from place to place, time to time, and character to character in these linked lives, Jennifer Egan takes us from point A to point B.

"You grew up...just like the rest of us."
By Jill I. Shtulman
In Jennifer's Egan's lively and inventive novel - A Visit From The Goon Squad - each character feels his or her mortality. Each is in a tenuous danse-a-deux with time and aging, otherwise known as "the goon."

Every chapter is told from a different character's point of view and it is no accident that the novel starts with Sasha - the assistant of music producer Bennie Salazar, one of the key focal points. Sasha has sticky fingers and is constantly pirating away meaningless objects to compose "the warped core of her life." These objects serve as talismans, placing her at arm's length from the love she wants.

And Bennie? A one-time band member and arrogant indie genius, he is now one step removed from the action, adding flakes of gold to his coffee to enhance his libido and bemoaning the state of digital technology. Like Sasha, he's at arm's length from a direct connection with love and life in general.

Bennie and Sasha will never know much about each other - even though they've worked together for decades - but the reader comes to know them through various stories. We get to know Lou, Bennie's charismatic, misbehaving, skirt-chasing mentor during a harrowing African safari; Dolly, the PR mogul who places her own daughter in harm's way; Jules, the ex-con journalist whose lunch with a Hollywood grade B actress goes terribly wrong; Ted Hollander, Sasha's art-loving uncle, who travels to Naples to find her. Each will add a little something to our understanding.

Yet none of their stories is told in chronological order, or even through flashbacks. Rather, time is revealed like the grooves of a record album, jumping from track to track in what appears to be no particular order. As each character takes his or her own moment in the spotlight, he or she is desperate for a second chance and to hold off the approaching goon. At one point, Dolly reflects, "Her deeper error had preceded all that: she's overlooked a seismic shift...Now and then (she) finds herself wondering what sort of event or convergence would define the new world in which she found herself, as Capote's party had, or Woodstock, or Malcolm Forbes's seventieth birthday, or the party for Talk Magazine. She had no idea."

The rich, lush, adventurous life that these characters once lived is being replaced by PowerPoints (one young character reveals her story through a 40-page PowerPoint presentation), paid "parrots" who create social media buzz, truncated emails, and digital technology. As Egan's characters "strut and fret" their last hours on the broader stage, the world of technology is making them increasingly irrelevant. When Alex - Sasha's would be beau whom we meet in the first chapter - tells Bennie, "I don't know what happened to me," Bennie's answer is, "You grew up, Alex...just like the rest of us."

A Muddled Mess
By JJ in PH
This novel probably contains the worst punctuation I've ever encountered, and if that isn't bad enough the jokes are lame and the story is disjointed. An example of the shoddy writing: For some reason, the author felt the need to augment the word Pennsylvania. I'll clean it up a bit by writing it Pennsyl-effing-vania. But as the reader encounters this hyphenated nonsense over and over again, the fact that he couldn't even get the state's name correct truly irritates, as he reversed the 'y' and the 'l'. Yes, we end up with Pennsly-effing-vania. My god, man, work on your editing, and then farm it out to someone who knows what they're doing.

Literary Adult Fiction
By J. Kaye Oldner
"No Mad" by Sam Moffie is a non-linear literary adult fiction. Aaron Abrams, a 40-ish high school English teacher and author of two fiction books, gets a call from his agent about a new book deal with a $100,000 advance. Rushing home to share the news with his wife, he finds her and his older brother naked and occupied on a float in their pool. Aaron makes a snap decision, grabs a few items and gets his dog and takes off on a self-discovery journey ending with his daughter's wedding.

Aaron is positive, upbeat, and cynical with a playful nature. One of the plot lines is Aaron's new book. It is called "Yearbook," and is about looking at several college classmates to find out what they were like in college in the seventies and what they were doing now, along with what lessons college had on their life and career choices. This device allows Moffie to inject political and historical commentary. Other topics are hemorrhoids, the proper toilet reading material, erotic sex, drugs, Newman's Own lemonade, empty nest, success, divorce, fatherhood and child raising, air-guitar, softball, the game Jinx, and financial security. Did I say Aaron was a teacher?

This entertaining and easy-to-read book was both humorous and serious. Moffie set up his character and the different sub-plot lines well enough to be able to discuss the many diverse topics along with the socio-political commentary. All felt connected. However, I think if he would have left out the three erotic sex segments the book would stand have a greater appeal. Still, Aaron Abrams is an interesting `hero', and how he handled the situation was unique.

"WILD, FUNNY AND TOUCHING!"
By Author/Reviewer Geri Ahearn
Sam Moffie takes the reader on an unforgettable road trip that's better than a seven-day-stay at Disney World, but is similar to Disney World's famous ride through America's past, present, and future. The main character is Aaron Abrams, a forty-seven year old English teacher whose life changes in a matter of minutes, after one phone call of good news, and one moment of watching his twenty year marriage go down the tubes. He was informed of an exciting book deal he couldn't refuse, offering him one-hundred thousand dollars in advance to write the "Yearbook" and the bad news was witnessing his wife and brother engaged in sex at his own home. During two moments of his life he will always remember, he decides to act with nonviolent behavior as he grabs his dog, and hits the road. As his road trip begins in Ohio and ends in scenic Niagara Falls, his journey becomes an incredible rambling, funny, and rambunctious trip that the reader will never forget. While driving on Interstate 80, the reader learns that Aaron is a guy who drowns his sorrows by becoming best friends with his golden retriever, how addicted Aaron is to the game Jinx, and his obsession with
hemorrhoids. As the fascinating journey continues, we learn about Aaron's quirk for Newman's Own Virgin Lemonade, the odd characters he meets along the way, and the rediscovery of America seen through his eyes. We learn about the pain he had to bear from the betrayal of his wife, the blow to his head from his brother, and the powerful influence of flashbacks from the 70's music in relation to life's experiences. Before the end of Aaron's voyage, we also learn that he is a nurturing father of three children, a Romeo in new romance, and his thoughts on his daughter's pregnancy and her impending marriage. The adventurous journey continues with sidesplitting sexual encounters, the use of illegal drugs, and aliens. As the reader takes history lessons during Aaron's new found freedom from New York to Boston, and Gettysburg to New Mexico, we are introduced to many bizarre characters. For the icing on the cake, the author creates the amusing events of the Crazy Horse Monument. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an adventure that's heartwarming, and filled with humor. Will Aaron ever find a place he could call home again? What shocking events did Aaron learn, while interviewing his fraternity brothers? Find out the answers in this unique, thought-provoking, fun ride. The author's down-to-earth candor in this fast-paced novel, packed with engrossing stories in a splendid plot will take you to places you've never been to, and make you crave for more. Does Aaron fall in love with his agent's assistant? Where did Aaron meet the nymphomanic, pothead State Trooper? Fasten your seatbelt, and continue this amazing road odyssey down memory lane of the past, and the present. "NO MAD" is as touching as WHERE THE HEART IS, and as funny as NOTHING TO LOSE with
Martin Lawrence, and Tim Robbins.

Shadow of Night: A Novel (All Souls Trilogy), by Deborah Harkness

"Together we lifted our feet and stepped into the unknown"—the thrilling sequel to the New York Times bestseller A Discovery of Witches

Deborah Harkness exploded onto the literary scene with her debut novel, A Discovery of Witches, Book One of the magical All Souls Trilogy and an international publishing phenomenon. The novel introduced Diana Bishop, Oxford scholar and reluctant witch, and the handsome geneticist and vampire Matthew Clairmont; together they found themselves at the center of a supernatural battle over an enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782.

Now, picking up from A Discovery of Witches’ cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night plunges Diana and Matthew into Elizabethan London, a world of spies, subterfuge, and a coterie of Matthew’s old friends, the mysterious School of Night that includes Christopher Marlowe and Walter Raleigh. Here, Diana must locate a witch to tutor her in magic, Matthew is forced to confront a past he thought he had put to rest, and the mystery of Ashmole 782 deepens.

Deborah Harkness has crafted a gripping journey through a world of alchemy, time travel, and magical discoveries, delivering one of the most hotly anticipated novels of the season.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, July 2012: Deborah Harkness burst onto the scene with her 2011 debut A Discovery of Witches, a book that introduced legions of fans to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar, and Matthew Clairmont, a handsome geneticist. Diana also happened to be a witch, and Matthew a vampire—and readers couldn’t get enough of them, right up to the thrilling cliffhanger ending. Now Shadow of Night picks up where the first book leaves off, with Diana and Matthew entering Elizabethan London, where Mathew is part of the mysterious School of Night, a group that counts Christopher Marlowe and Sir Walter Raleigh among its members. Characterization, a great eye for detail, and a story that takes some notable twists and turns make this a great novel that will more than live up to eager fans’ expectations. It’s even better than the first. -- Chris Schluep

Review
 Praise for Shadow of Night

“A captivating and romantic ripping yarn.”
—E. L. James, “Books of the Year 2012: Authors Choose Their Favourites,” The Guardian

“The joy that Harkness, herself a historian, takes in visiting the past is evident on every page. . . . A great spell, the one that can enchant a reader and make a 600-page book fly through her fingertips, is cast. . . . Its enduring rewards are plenty.”
—Entertainment Weekly

“Fans of Harkness’s 2011 debut A Discovery of Witches will be delighted. . . . Harkness delivers enough romance and excitement to keep the pages turning. Readers will devour it.”
—People

“Deborah Harkness takes us places we’ve never been before. . . . Shadow of Night isn't just about wonderfully detailed descriptions of England in 1591, it's about being there. Readers time-travel as precisely and precariously as Diana and Matthew do. . . . Shadow ends as Discovery did with promises of more to come. Lucky for us.”
—USA Today

“Harkness exudes her own style of magic in making the world of late 16th century England come alive. . . . Enchanting, engrossing and as impossible to put down as its predecessor, Shadow of Night is a perfect blend of fantasy, history and romance. Its single greatest flaw is, after almost 600 pages, it’s over. If you’ve already read and enjoyed A Discovery of Witches, picking up Shadow of Night is an absolute requirement. Otherwise, pick up both, and consider your reading list complete.”
—Miami Herald

“Picking up where she left off in last year’s A Discovery of Witches, Harkness proves she’s not suffering from a sophomore slump with this addictive tale of magic, mayhem and two lovers.”
—Chicago Tribune

“Rich, period fun, particularly delightful in its witty characterization of historical immortals . . . Shadow ramps up the supernatural suspense.”
—New York Daily News

“This novel is as much a love story about a bygone era as it is about Matthew and Diana. It overflows with a colorful cast of characters, many of whom Harkness has plucked straight from the history books, and Harkness renders the late 1500s in exquisite detail. . . . The writing is so rich, the characters so compelling . . . and best of all, Harkness manages to execute with aplomb the act of answering old questions while posing new ones that will intensify anticipation for the final installment. Readers who have been counting down the days, take heart: The wait was most assuredly worth it.”
—BookPage

Praise for A Discovery of Witches:

“A wonderfully imaginative grown-up fantasy with all the magic of Harry Potter or Twilight. . . . An irresistible tale of wizardry, science and forbidden love.”

—People

“Romantic, erudite, and suspenseful . . . Harkness attends to every scholarly and emotional detail with whimsy, sensuality, and humor.”

—O, The Oprah Magazine

“A thoroughly grown-up novel packed with gorgeous historical detail and a gutsy, brainy heroine to match. . . . Harkness writes with thrilling gusto about the magical world.”

—Karen Valby, Entertainment Weekly

“Harkness conjures up a scintillating paranormal story. . . . Discover why everyone’s talking about this magical book.”

—USA Today

“Delightfully well-crafted and enchantingly imaginative . . . It has some of the same ineluctable atmosphere that made Anne Rice’s vampire books such a popular success.”

—Miami Herald

“A debut novel with a big supernatural canvas . . . Its ambitions are world-sized, ranging across history and zeroing in on DNA, human and otherwordly. Age-old tensions between science and magic and between evolution and alchemy erupt as Diana seeks to unlock the secrets of Ashmole 782.”

—Los Angeles Times

“Harkness, an eloquent writer, conjures this world of witches with Ivy League degrees and supernatural creatures completely—and believably—while maintaining a sense of wonder. . . . A Discovery of Witches is that rare historical novel that manages to be as intelligent as it is romantic. And it is supernatural fiction that those of us who usually prefer to stay grounded in reality can get caught up in. Pardon the pun, but Witches is truly spellbinding.”

—San Antonio News-Express

“Readers who thrilled to Elizabeth Kostova’s 2005 blockbuster, The Historian, will note the parallels, but A Discovery of Witches is a modern Romeo and Juliet story, with older, wiser lovers. Blood will flow when a witch and a vampire fall for each other. Author Deborah Harkness, a UCLA history professor, brings vast knowledge and research to the page.”

—Cleveland Plain-Dealer

“Harkness works her own form of literary alchemy by deftly blending fantasy, romance, history, and horror into one completely bewitching book.”

—Chicago Tribune

“A Discovery of Witches becomes increasingly charming as it goes along. . . . A shrewdly written romp and a satisfying snow-day read for those of us who heartily enjoyed the likes of Anne Rice and Marion Zimmer Bradley. By the book’s rousing end . . . I was impatient for the sequel.”

—NPR

“A captivating tale that will ensnare the heart and imagination of even the most skeptical reader. This fantastic first novel will leave you anxious for the next installment, and sad to leave the remarkable world Harkness has created. Simply put, A Discovery of Witches is literary magic at its most potent.”

—Stephanie Harrison, BookPage

“Set in our contemporary world with a magical twist, this sparkling debut by a history professor features a large cast of fascinating characters, and readers will find themselves invested in Diana’s success at unlocking the secrets of the manuscript. . . . Harkness is an author to watch.” —Library Journal (starred review)

“Harkness creates a compelling and sweeping tale that moves from Oxford to Paris to upstate New York and into both Diana and Matthew’s complex families and histories. All her characters are fully fleshed and unique.”

—Booklist (starred review)

“Harkness brings this world to vibrant life and makes the most of the growing popularity of gothic adventure with an ending that keeps the Old Lodge door wide open.”

—Publishers Weekly

“A Discovery of Witches is a strange and wonderful novel of forbidden love and ancient spells that turns every preconception about magic on its head. Deborah Harkness has written one of the most exciting novels I’ve read in years. . . . I fell in love with it from the very first page.” —Danielle Trussoni, author of Angelology

“Deborah Harkness’s novel is a brilliant synthesis of magic and history. A gripping story of dangerous passion, intellectual intrigue, and fantastical beings.” —Ivy Pochoda, author of The Art of Disappearing

“A fleet-footed novel set in a vivid otherworld, richly peppered with scholarly tidbits. Huge fun—with serious underpinnings of history.” —Jane Borodale, author of The Book of Fires

Great trilogy!
By Purple
Having started the series with a library book, I had to buy this one because the waiting list at the library was too long. I'm glad I didn't wait; it was worth the purchase price to continue the story of the witch Diana and vampire Matthew. It has everything the first novel had plus time travel, and begins immediately where the first novel left the reader - as Diana and Matthew begin their journey back in time.

Harkness successfully continues the characters' story and immerses the reader in Elizabethan England. The reader is introduced to many famous historical figures from both the political and artistic communities. Fans of timey wimey stuff (that is a Dr. Who reference, by the way) will get their fill in both this novel and the conclusion of the trilogy...what alters timelines, when do characters meet in the past and what happens to their present day selves as a result of those meetings? In addition, the romance continues, as do the fantasy aspects of witches, vampires, and alchemy. Add in suspense of the race to find the mysterious book, and what that book will reveal about all of the different creatures who inhabit this world, and you have a novel you will stay up to finish. And yes, you will want to get the 3rd one and finish the series.

Warning! This review contains minor spoilers for the first book in the All Souls Trilogy, A Discovery of Witches.

Shadow of Night is one of those books that is very hard for me to review. I really enjoyed it, but there is so much to talk about with the historical details, the large cast of intriguing characters, and the overall experience that I don't want to overdo the gushing. The last time readers saw historian and witch, Diana Bishop, and her vampire husband, Matthew, they were off on a journey to 16th century England. The reason for this time travel adventure is to find a witch to help Diana learn about her unique powers and to find clues to the location of the missing manuscript, Ashmole 782.

Like with A Discovery of Witches, Diana and Matthew are the center of the book and they pretty much control the success of the story. Thankfully, both of them are interesting characters who are a great combination of likable and flawed. They each have their own journeys to complete and do so with a unique spin. I will admit that I had a few issues with Matthew's overbearing nature and Diana's recklessness, but these instances were rare and they did always learn from their mistakes. The romance (while not the main storyline) is interesting and fun. These two may have declared their love for each other in the first book, but it becomes obvious that their relationship is still new and continues to grow.

Most of the book takes place in the 16th century which is a fun difference than the first book. Readers get to meet a ton of historical figures and see them interact with Diana and Matthew. Some of my particular favorites were Christopher Marlowe, Edward Kelly, Emperor Rudolf II, Mary Sidney, and, of course, Queen Elizabeth I. Diana and Matthew travel from England to his father's keep in France and even to the Holy Roman Empire. I am a history geek so this was an absolute blast for me. I also enjoyed the introduction of Matthew's nephew, Gallowglass, and that we finally got to meet Matthew's father, Philippe. Some of the book does take place in the present-day with Ysabeau, Marcus, and others finding hints of the time travel in the current time which was interesting.

As I mentioned, there is a lot going on in this book and I don't want to give much more to avoid major spoilers. I will say that it takes some time to get used to the writing style and readers do have to go through quite a bit of detail, but the story is so well-crafted that it is worth the time and effort. I also will say that this would not make a good stand-alone story due to the worldbuilding and character development. I was impressed though with how easy it was to slip back into the series after going more than a year between books. I highly recommend this series and can't wait to see how it ends with The Book of Life which was just released this month.

A Middling Middle to Harkness' Trilogy
By Grace Jane
There is a lot to like about this sequel to A Discovery of Witches. Harkness, like Connie Willis arnd Hilary Mantel, does an excellent job of recreating an historical era, in this case the Elizabethan, and of integrating her protagonists, Diana and Matthew, into that world. Some of the characters are truly memorable, particularly Matthew's father Philippe and Kit Marlowe. Harkness adds a lot to her richly imagined mythology of vampires and witches, particularly witches, as we learn that Diana is a weaver, one of the witches who creates spells. Unfortunately, very little actually happens in this very long book and while we get a rich sense of the sights, sounds and smells of the time, we don't get a real sense of how people lived and thought. The killings of witches in Scotland are alluded to, but how much richer the book would have been if Diana had been separated from Matthew and forced to take shelter with those women. There was a real opportunity to explore the era of witch burning in England that was sadly missed. And I can't be the only one tired of the subplot of willfully obtuse 21st century Diana trying to understand her moody, tortured centuries old husband. Harkness needs to stop channeling Emily Bronte and Matthew needs to stop clutching his roguish curls, beating his manly breast and develop a more humorous approach to life. I would think that living forever would enable you to develop some bemused detachment toward life, but apparently not. This was a very long book, beautifully described if somewhat wordy and academic. I am interested in the third book but it is at the bottom of my "to read" virtual stack and I am not inclined to move it up.

The bookshops – virtual and physical – are literally packed with this stuff; much of it conflicting with each other and everyday life, resulting in questions or confusion. Rowan says that this is down to poor Oral Transmission; in other words, getting the wrong end of the stick (the poo end), and he attempts to demystify it all for us.

Having painstakingly searched the web for the most popular, reoccurring questions and misconceptions, Rowan answers them and more.

I tried using LOA to win the lottery but I’m still as poor! So that didn’t work. What a con.
How does an abused child create their reality?
Why do bad things happen to people? Surely they don’t attract this: a car accident/a robbery/an assault?
If you can just think things into existence, why are there so many starving people in Africa?
Why can’t people with terminal diseases make themselves well with LOA?
What about the thousands of people who die via earthquakes, tsunamis and tornadoes? How do they manifest that into their lives?

Written with a brash, no B***S***, comical approach; in a very unique style. This is unlike any ‘Law of Attraction’ book you’ve ever read before.
With passages like: ‘Blow the crap out of lingering doubt’, ‘Up yours, science dudes’, and ‘Feeling like fackin’ rainbows are flying out of my butt awesome’, you know what you’re getting yourself into.

Rowan Collins takes the content very seriously, though, and with over two decades of research, and implementing the concepts in his own life, talks about ‘Manifesting’ with authority and passion, including some stuff you’ll find difficult to come across in other books: ‘Co-Creators’, ‘Living the Feeling’, and ‘Is This True?’.

It’s safe to say that the self-help market is saturated with gumpf. But if you could have only one book on the ‘Law of Attraction’, it should definitely be this one. Oh, and you wouldn’t want to miss out on meeting Bob now, would you?
