American Realism, by Edward Lucie-Smith

This lavishly illustrated book explores the tremendous scope, richness, toughness sensibility and liveliness of the American realist tradition. Sixteen varied sections discuss and display the finest and most important work of different artists, groups, schools and periods - including American Impressionism, The Ashcan School, Precisionism, American Scene Painting, Edward Hopper, Urban realism, Photorealism and Postmodern realism today - and provide convincing proof that the American realist legacy occupies an unparalleled position in the world art of the past one hundred years. In this important critical synthesis, Edward Lucie-Smith discusses the work of the pioneering masters of American realism, such as Thomas Etkins, Mary Cassatt, Charles Sheeler, Thomas Hart Benton, Georgia O'Keesse and Andrew Wyeth. He adds a major new dimension in his examination of the work of contemporary realist painters: those currently acknowledged as major figures today, such as Wayne Thiebaud and Leon Golub, but also those whose reputations and contribution have only fairly recently been fully appreciated, among them Isabel Bishop, Alice Neel and Fairfield Porter, as well as younger artists, such as Eric Fischl and Jeff Koons, who have achieved star status as practitioners of this innovative tradition. The book thus carries the story of American realism right up to the present moment, and shows how it continues to flourish in the United States today as strongly as it has in the past. A magnificent volume, with over one hundred colour plates, American Realism both celebrates and reveals the strengths of a great American legacy.

Amazon.com Review
American Realism is Edward Lucie-Smith's eloquent and interesting discourse tracing the progress of American realist art from the colonial period through postmodernism. It features a generous 250 illustrations and 115 gorgeous, full-color plates. Lucie-Smith's underlying argument seems to be that realism more accurately reveals the American character than does abstract expressionism or minimalism. This premise is developed by examining specific paintings and placing them in a cultural and historical context. Of particular interest are the sections on Thomas Eakins, Thomas Hart Benton, Ben Shahn, Philip Pearlstein, Andy Warhol, and Eric Fischl. --Madeline Crowley

From Library Journal
Realism is a means of examining, interpreting, and expressing our experience of the world around us. Lucie-Smith, a well-known writer on contemporary art, has gathered a wealth of images that traces the development of what he feels is the ever-present, deeply rooted, and uniquely American pragmatic confrontation with the experience of everyday life. The need to define oneself in terms of social, intellectual, and physical settings has always been the impetus of creativity, and whether in the serene oarsman of an Eakins, the elegant lady of a Sargent, the lonely figure of a Hopper, the exaggerated sailor of a Cadmus, or the more recent, supple if unsubtle Duane Hanson sculptures and Chuck Close photomontage portraits, it is a strong and flourishing form of American identification. An interesting overview that covers much of what is familiar within a slightly different context and point of view.

From Booklist
Lucie-Smith, author, most recently, of Race, Sex, and Gender in Contemporary Art, excels at making new connections and expressing fresh interpretations. Here he focuses on the "realist impulse," an essential ingredient in American art from the days of George Caleb Bingham to those of Philip Pearlstein. American realism includes an intriguingly disparate variety of paintings because realism's content and style are always "qualified by the artist's conception of what is happening, as distinct from his perception of it." Lucie-Smith examines 16 distinct phases of Amercian realism, beginning with the quasi-scientific work of Thomas Eakins and moving through impressionistic realism to the era of the Ashcan school. As we follow Lucie-Smith to the work of Edward Hopper and the urban realism of such artists as Reginald Marsh, we begin to see that American realism moves in a grand cycle from gritty and disturbing subject matter back to more comforting themes, such as the domestic contentment of Fairfield Porter and the irony of pop art. Not only does Lucie-Smith include all the key players, but he also reminds us of some remarkable figurative artists, such as George Tooker, whose art extends and challenges the meaning of realism. The Gold Standard on American Realism Painting
By Grady Harp
Edward Lucie-Smith's inimitable style of writing endears him to his readers who might just be buying art books for the pictures - the ubiquitous coffeetable book. His approach to his subject (and his catalogue of published books on art is staggering in scope) is always 'Art first, Opinion second', which is another way of saying that he lets the work describe itself in the sensitive way in which he constructs his books.
AMERICAN REALISM is as much a sociological study of the American progress as it is a matrix to etch images that accompany that historical trek. In his fine introduction he sets the tone for the journey, then addresses early American art and begins his intensive presentation with the works of Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer. Subsequent chapters find new insights into American Still Life, the Impressists in America (Cassatt, Sargent, Chase, Hassam), then proceeds on through the Ashcan School, Regionalism (one of the most creative chapters), through the Urban and Social Realism of the likes of Hopper, Marsh, Soyer and Shahn. Here his style of writing diverges as he addresses the Revolution in American Art, or, what has America made that is uniquely her own. Of great interest here is his emphasis on painters such as Paul Cadmus, Philip Guston, Jared French, George Tooker, Andrew Wyeth, bringing to their works a sensitivity rarely written prior to this book. After Abstraction he once again returns to representational art and brings to life Fairfield Porter, Neil Welliver, Jane Freilicher, Larry Rivers, Richard Diebenkorn,Wayne Thiebaud, Chuck Close, John Nava, Alice Neel, Gregory Gillespie, Martha Mayer Erlebacher, Eric Fischl, Leon Golub, and yes, even Jeff Koons.
The sparkling and informative dialogue of this book is enhanced by superb reproductions of paintings in both color and black and white. This book is somewhat dated now, having been published in 1994 and newly released in paperback. One hopes that Lucie-Smith will write a sequel to this volume and bring the public up to date with the many artists who belong in this company, artists - like Wes Hempel, Gerard Huber, Michael Workman, Wade Reynolds, James Doolin, Willaim Fogg, Robert Peterson, Daniel Sprick..........and of course countless others. A 'must have' for any solid library.

A much broader topic than one would have suspected
By Craig Matteson
One of the myths of "realism" is that it is somehow less challenging than non-representational art. This terrific book takes on the broad sweep of American Realism from the Civil War through 1990. The book is full of wonderful images from so many different styles that the reader can begin to see that what is called realistic or representational has its own symbolic language and is full of its own abstractions and distortions of trying to represent aspects of our four dimensional world on a two dimensional surface.

The book is full of paintings of all types and styles within this broad topic. There are also photographs of related sculpture and even photographs that are themselves the work of art. The images contained in the book range from the sublime, to the odd and strange, through the raunchy and vulgar.

The text is lively, insightful, and adds a great deal to the reader's understanding of the images included.

there are People who hold Geometry as their Favorite and most Formative Discipline
By Leo Volont
I was a bit afraid of getting this book. I knew I needed Geometry. My Hobby since Retirement (getting fired from Age Discrimination) had been studying Mathematics. And, well, it seems that usual progression to Calculus is via Algebra and Trig. Nobody makes much of a fuss about Geometry... Except! Well, there are People who hold Geometry as their Favorite and most Formative Discipline... Proving Everything and all of that. But the word "Elementary" threw me off. For that kind of money, I did not want an Elementary Anything... I wanted the Full 10 Gage Goose Gun of Geometry (oh, note... '10 gage goose guns are virtual cannons'... even the hardcore Street Thugs stick with the smaller 12 gages). But the Reviews seems good, and, well, there was Really Nothing Much out there... that didn't get horrible reviews... but were significantly cheaper. Here is a Hint. If you are going to sit at the Table Every Day and go through a Math Text Book.... because you think that Should Be Fun... well, you need a Special Math Text Book. A Cheap and Irritatingly Limited Math Book, at a fraction of the Price, would still take you 3 or 4 Months to get through. But the cheap book would be annoying. You would have to run to your computer all the time to get cross references and explanations. The Better Book at even its far greater Price is a Bargain after all. A good Text Book is something you actually Love. a cheap Text Book is something you quickly learn to loath and despise.

I Love this Geometry Book. Well, yes, It turns out that I am more of an Algebra Guy. More than half the Axioms and Theorems seem to be So Obvious as not needing to be Stated. It reminds me of Reviews I had read about Euclid's Books on Geometry... that back in his Dark Ancient Days where nobody knew any better, He left out what were considered Essential Proofs. Now I understand that even Euclid thought some things were just too plain and obvious to need some, well, Idiotically labored 'Proof'... such as "A Line Equals Itself'.... Duh!? who would have it any other way?

So, I am Doing the book, paying attention to only what I feel are the Essential Proofs... and Thank God I am not doing this book in a college course, or it would take me a bit longer to go through the Exercises. Oh, yes, many Exercises, and answers in the back for the Odd Problems, and great Examples... a Real College Book!

Its been Great Fun!

Gone for You: Sixth Street Band Contemporary Romance Series (Sixth Street Band Series Book 1), by Jayne Frost

As the guitarist for the rock band Caged, I know the rules: no relationships. No complications. Leave ‘em smiling when you go, but always go. Besides, it’s not like I’m ever in one place for more than a few days at a time. As the next hottest thing out of Austin, the band and I are riding the wave, and the music is all that matters.

Until her…

Lily Tennison has “complication” written across her beautiful face. But I can’t get involved. The timing’s all wrong. But she’s under my skin, and I can’t resist her troubled eyes and sweet smile. And I do have a little time to kill. Not much, just a few days in Dallas.

So I’ll scratch the itch and move on, like I always do.

Simple, right?

Note: You won't need to turn up the heat—Sixth Street Bands Romances have plenty of steamy fun. This story can be read as a stand-alone but is part of the Sixth Street Bands music scene.

About the Author
As a writer you would think that would be a simple question…but it’s not. I spend so much time living in my characters heads, listening to their voices, that sometimes I forget about my own. I guess I should start with the basics: the backstory. I was born and raised in California. At this point, I’m usually asked what it was like to grow up near the beach, but sadly, I don’t know. I grew up in the “other” part of California. Perfect for an aspiring writer, if you ask me. You learn a lot about keeping yourself busy when the nearest house is a mile away…and it belongs to your grandparents. I spent all my time with my nose in a book, living vicariously through the characters, until I wrote a book of my own. I was ten at the time. It was a scintillating piece that cast the family pet as the protagonist. By the time I went to high school, I moved on to romance. Why? Because I met my very own prince charming. I wrote love poems in my journal about the green-eyed boy who stole my heart. He promised, the way all storybook heroes do, to sweep me away and take me on a grand adventure. And he did. We picked up and moved to the Lone Star State and began the story of us. The best stories begin without a road map or a compass. Veering off course makes the journey so much more interesting. True to form, just when I thought my life was set, we started the next adventure. I traded in my cowboy boots and followed my green-eyed boy to Las Vegas. My home will always be in Texas, but my heart is anywhere that he is. Our beautiful daughter made the journey with us. Our son stayed in Texas, to write his own story. Somehow, in the midst of the chaos that is our life, I find time to write. Writing is what I love. I might stray from romance every now and then if that is what moves me…but I always come back. Some of the stories don’t seem romantic at all. They are gritty stories about flawed characters that find each other and hold on tight. Those are the stories that speak to me. Because that’s life. I believe that every story should have a happy ending—even the difficult ones.

A guy's point of view!
By Tishia (Paranormal Opinion)
Gone for You is a contemporary romance by Jayne Frost. This book is actually all from the point of view of the guy, which was a nice change of pace. Cameron is the guitarist in a rock band. He doesn't do relationships. He's not in the same place long enough to get close to anyone, so he is an expert on one night stands.

While staying in Dallas for a few days, he meets a woman named Lily. She's not like all the other girls that are falling at his feet. There's something about her that intrigues him. Despite being from a rich, prestigious family, Lily has her share of problems.

I liked how Lily wasn't falling for Cameron's charms in the very beginning – but I wished that would have lasted a little longer. I would have liked to see more build up and sexual tension. Especially since Lily assumed that she would just be a short fling for Cameron. I also had some trouble feeling the sparks between the two characters. Maybe because the book was fairly short so the storyline happened quickly.

It was a nice, sweet romance with some humor and steamy moments mixed it. At only 200 pages, it was a quick read. This is a stand-alone book but it looks as if it will be part of a series. I'm guessing that future books will be about the other guys in the band. If so, then I'm interested in reading more and getting to know the other characters.

A steamy read
By Ashley Tomlinson
It's books like this that is making me fall for romance novels. It was incredibly amazing and hot! There was a good storyline and a happy ending -no pun intended.

Cameron is the singer in a rock band trying to escape the media for a few days. When he goes to a resort that Lily works at, things start to change. What was intended to be a fling was turning into something else entirely. He doesn't do relationships, he's a rockstar after all but Lily may change that. He is unable to get this girl out of his head but he doesn't stop to think about what this could to do her. With a famous last name herself just being in a relationship with this sexy rocker could mean the end of her dreams. Will they both be able to make the right choices?

Of course being a rockstar romance means it was a lot like very other rockstar romance. He was a rocker that never dated but made an exception for her and they fell in love, and I loved every second of it. Maybe it was the being from Texas thing because I just pictured a sexy rocker cowboy. I don't know what it was that drew me to this book but I was so captivated by it that I finished it in one sitting.

I was absolutely rooting for Lily and Cam, who wouldn't? I mean it was pretty much a given to root for them to workout. Her having that stutter was unexpected though because usually the girls are beyond perfect in every way. It was nice that she had something that wasn't perfect about her, it made her seem more real to me.

I hated her family, especially her mother. Talking so harshly towards her in front of other people, saying her stuttering was a handicap and trying to force her to leave Cameron, was enough to make me want to punch her. She was the stereotypical rich snobby woman like Emily Gilmore was in The Gilmore Girls. But I know there always has to be someone that wants the two love birds to split and she was that person.

This was a great, fun read that had my face turning red at times. Though I'm not a huge fan on contemporary, I'm coming around to them and this book may have won me over. I highly recommend it for anyone that likes sexy rockstars and a steamy romance.

NOT For Me
By Julie
Lily has a great job at a resort in Dallas. She had no idea what she was in for when this famous guitarist walks into her life. Cameron Knight looked like nothing but trouble but what was wrong with finding out just how much trouble he could be.

I'll just cut to the chase about Gone for You. I struggled with the rating on this one, I didn't know whether to give it one or two stars. Harsh, right? I just really didn't connect with ... anything ... in this book. I will say this, this story is told from the POV of Cameron Knight. It's not too often that you can find a contemporary romance novel written from a male's perspective. I was super intrigued by that. It's interesting to get into someone's head ... especially a dude's because for this character, I figured his head would be full of bong resin and hops. I was correct on the latter. There was a lot of the latter. But there would need to be for the rock and roller cliche to be complete. That also, was harsh. But I'm sorry I'm not sorry. And the reason I'm not sorry is that this book seemed to be one big cliche ... the band getting female attention, the band putting as many notches in their bedposts as they can a night, drunken hookups, the manager that is horrible ... it was all in there. I just expected more, maybe that is why I feel so let down.

I didn't really like any of the characters. They felt like they didn't have any depth ... while you're told portions about each of their backgrounds, it just isn't enough. The characters aren't fleshed out enough to make them seem even semi-real. Well, I take that back. There was one character that I really enjoyed but he literally had maybe a page total out of the whole book that was about him. The sad part is that I felt more connected to him than I did the main hero. It shouldn't be like that. I shouldn't struggle to see these characters as people.

To be honest, the whole book felt like it was written very one-dimensionally. There was conflict but it was resolved too easily, it didn't seem like real life. That's basically my whole issue with this book ... a lack of reality. I won't go on with this any more, I think you got the point. I don't think that this author is for me. Maybe she is for you though, good luck.
