there are People who hold Geometry as their Favorite and most Formative Discipline
By Leo Volont
I was a bit afraid of getting this book. I knew I needed Geometry. My Hobby since Retirement (getting fired from Age Discrimination) had been studying Mathematics. And, well, it seems that usual progression to Calculus is via Algebra and Trig. Nobody makes much of a fuss about Geometry... Except! Well, there are People who hold Geometry as their Favorite and most Formative Discipline... Proving Everything and all of that. But the word "Elementary" threw me off. For that kind of money, I did not want an Elementary Anything... I wanted the Full 10 Gage Goose Gun of Geometry (oh, note... '10 gage goose guns are virtual cannons'... even the hardcore Street Thugs stick with the smaller 12 gages). But the Reviews seems good, and, well, there was Really Nothing Much out there... that didn't get horrible reviews... but were significantly cheaper. Here is a Hint. If you are going to sit at the Table Every Day and go through a Math Text Book.... because you think that Should Be Fun... well, you need a Special Math Text Book. A Cheap and Irritatingly Limited Math Book, at a fraction of the Price, would still take you 3 or 4 Months to get through. But the cheap book would be annoying. You would have to run to your computer all the time to get cross references and explanations. The Better Book at even its far greater Price is a Bargain after all. A good Text Book is something you actually Love. a cheap Text Book is something you quickly learn to loath and despise.

I Love this Geometry Book. Well, yes, It turns out that I am more of an Algebra Guy. More than half the Axioms and Theorems seem to be So Obvious as not needing to be Stated. It reminds me of Reviews I had read about Euclid's Books on Geometry... that back in his Dark Ancient Days where nobody knew any better, He left out what were considered Essential Proofs. Now I understand that even Euclid thought some things were just too plain and obvious to need some, well, Idiotically labored 'Proof'... such as "A Line Equals Itself'.... Duh!? who would have it any other way?

So, I am Doing the book, paying attention to only what I feel are the Essential Proofs... and Thank God I am not doing this book in a college course, or it would take me a bit longer to go through the Exercises. Oh, yes, many Exercises, and answers in the back for the Odd Problems, and great Examples... a Real College Book!

Its been Great Fun!

Gone for You: Sixth Street Band Contemporary Romance Series (Sixth Street Band Series Book 1), by Jayne Frost

As the guitarist for the rock band Caged, I know the rules: no relationships. No complications. Leave ‘em smiling when you go, but always go. Besides, it’s not like I’m ever in one place for more than a few days at a time. As the next hottest thing out of Austin, the band and I are riding the wave, and the music is all that matters.

Until her…

Lily Tennison has “complication” written across her beautiful face. But I can’t get involved. The timing’s all wrong. But she’s under my skin, and I can’t resist her troubled eyes and sweet smile. And I do have a little time to kill. Not much, just a few days in Dallas.

So I’ll scratch the itch and move on, like I always do.

Simple, right?

Note: You won't need to turn up the heat—Sixth Street Bands Romances have plenty of steamy fun. This story can be read as a stand-alone but is part of the Sixth Street Bands music scene.

About the Author
As a writer you would think that would be a simple question…but it’s not. I spend so much time living in my characters heads, listening to their voices, that sometimes I forget about my own. I guess I should start with the basics: the backstory. I was born and raised in California. At this point, I’m usually asked what it was like to grow up near the beach, but sadly, I don’t know. I grew up in the “other” part of California. Perfect for an aspiring writer, if you ask me. You learn a lot about keeping yourself busy when the nearest house is a mile away…and it belongs to your grandparents. I spent all my time with my nose in a book, living vicariously through the characters, until I wrote a book of my own. I was ten at the time. It was a scintillating piece that cast the family pet as the protagonist. By the time I went to high school, I moved on to romance. Why? Because I met my very own prince charming. I wrote love poems in my journal about the green-eyed boy who stole my heart. He promised, the way all storybook heroes do, to sweep me away and take me on a grand adventure. And he did. We picked up and moved to the Lone Star State and began the story of us. The best stories begin without a road map or a compass. Veering off course makes the journey so much more interesting. True to form, just when I thought my life was set, we started the next adventure. I traded in my cowboy boots and followed my green-eyed boy to Las Vegas. My home will always be in Texas, but my heart is anywhere that he is. Our beautiful daughter made the journey with us. Our son stayed in Texas, to write his own story. Somehow, in the midst of the chaos that is our life, I find time to write. Writing is what I love. I might stray from romance every now and then if that is what moves me…but I always come back. Some of the stories don’t seem romantic at all. They are gritty stories about flawed characters that find each other and hold on tight. Those are the stories that speak to me. Because that’s life. I believe that every story should have a happy ending—even the difficult ones.

A guy's point of view!
By Tishia (Paranormal Opinion)
Gone for You is a contemporary romance by Jayne Frost. This book is actually all from the point of view of the guy, which was a nice change of pace. Cameron is the guitarist in a rock band. He doesn't do relationships. He's not in the same place long enough to get close to anyone, so he is an expert on one night stands.

While staying in Dallas for a few days, he meets a woman named Lily. She's not like all the other girls that are falling at his feet. There's something about her that intrigues him. Despite being from a rich, prestigious family, Lily has her share of problems.

I liked how Lily wasn't falling for Cameron's charms in the very beginning – but I wished that would have lasted a little longer. I would have liked to see more build up and sexual tension. Especially since Lily assumed that she would just be a short fling for Cameron. I also had some trouble feeling the sparks between the two characters. Maybe because the book was fairly short so the storyline happened quickly.

It was a nice, sweet romance with some humor and steamy moments mixed it. At only 200 pages, it was a quick read. This is a stand-alone book but it looks as if it will be part of a series. I'm guessing that future books will be about the other guys in the band. If so, then I'm interested in reading more and getting to know the other characters.

A steamy read
By Ashley Tomlinson
It's books like this that is making me fall for romance novels. It was incredibly amazing and hot! There was a good storyline and a happy ending -no pun intended.

Cameron is the singer in a rock band trying to escape the media for a few days. When he goes to a resort that Lily works at, things start to change. What was intended to be a fling was turning into something else entirely. He doesn't do relationships, he's a rockstar after all but Lily may change that. He is unable to get this girl out of his head but he doesn't stop to think about what this could to do her. With a famous last name herself just being in a relationship with this sexy rocker could mean the end of her dreams. Will they both be able to make the right choices?

Of course being a rockstar romance means it was a lot like very other rockstar romance. He was a rocker that never dated but made an exception for her and they fell in love, and I loved every second of it. Maybe it was the being from Texas thing because I just pictured a sexy rocker cowboy. I don't know what it was that drew me to this book but I was so captivated by it that I finished it in one sitting.

I was absolutely rooting for Lily and Cam, who wouldn't? I mean it was pretty much a given to root for them to workout. Her having that stutter was unexpected though because usually the girls are beyond perfect in every way. It was nice that she had something that wasn't perfect about her, it made her seem more real to me.

I hated her family, especially her mother. Talking so harshly towards her in front of other people, saying her stuttering was a handicap and trying to force her to leave Cameron, was enough to make me want to punch her. She was the stereotypical rich snobby woman like Emily Gilmore was in The Gilmore Girls. But I know there always has to be someone that wants the two love birds to split and she was that person.

This was a great, fun read that had my face turning red at times. Though I'm not a huge fan on contemporary, I'm coming around to them and this book may have won me over. I highly recommend it for anyone that likes sexy rockstars and a steamy romance.

NOT For Me
By Julie
Lily has a great job at a resort in Dallas. She had no idea what she was in for when this famous guitarist walks into her life. Cameron Knight looked like nothing but trouble but what was wrong with finding out just how much trouble he could be.

I'll just cut to the chase about Gone for You. I struggled with the rating on this one, I didn't know whether to give it one or two stars. Harsh, right? I just really didn't connect with ... anything ... in this book. I will say this, this story is told from the POV of Cameron Knight. It's not too often that you can find a contemporary romance novel written from a male's perspective. I was super intrigued by that. It's interesting to get into someone's head ... especially a dude's because for this character, I figured his head would be full of bong resin and hops. I was correct on the latter. There was a lot of the latter. But there would need to be for the rock and roller cliche to be complete. That also, was harsh. But I'm sorry I'm not sorry. And the reason I'm not sorry is that this book seemed to be one big cliche ... the band getting female attention, the band putting as many notches in their bedposts as they can a night, drunken hookups, the manager that is horrible ... it was all in there. I just expected more, maybe that is why I feel so let down.

I didn't really like any of the characters. They felt like they didn't have any depth ... while you're told portions about each of their backgrounds, it just isn't enough. The characters aren't fleshed out enough to make them seem even semi-real. Well, I take that back. There was one character that I really enjoyed but he literally had maybe a page total out of the whole book that was about him. The sad part is that I felt more connected to him than I did the main hero. It shouldn't be like that. I shouldn't struggle to see these characters as people.

To be honest, the whole book felt like it was written very one-dimensionally. There was conflict but it was resolved too easily, it didn't seem like real life. That's basically my whole issue with this book ... a lack of reality. I won't go on with this any more, I think you got the point. I don't think that this author is for me. Maybe she is for you though, good luck.

It's time for Aggie to be spayed, and Ben must deal with a bit of separation anxiety and a brief change in his pet's behavior. Ries's style is clean and basic without being choppy and detached. It contains just a hint of wry humor that dovetails nicely with the characters' sometimes droll expressions. Dormer's illustrations are wonderful, evoking pathos when Ben cries in the backseat of the car on the way home after leaving Aggie, and laughter when Ben transforms her from a “lamp head” to a “lion head” by drawing a mane on her Elizabethan collar. Ries and Dormer once again prove a delightful pairing, cheerfully and tenderly persuading new readers to keep turning the page.Alyson Low, Fayetteville Public Library, AR

From Booklist
In this follow-up to Good Dog, Aggie (2009), set in an obedience school, it’s off to the vet for a young boy, Ben, and his beloved pooch, Aggie, who needs to be spayed, a procedure that’s explained as something that will keep her from “getting sick . . . or having any puppies.” In three chapters, Aggie’s loyal master relates his worries about leaving Aggie with the vet overnight, missing her while she is gone, and helping her through the healing process. The bright, pleasing art and sensitive text capture a range of authentic emotions. A strong choice for beginning readers. Grades 1-3. --Andrew Medlar

About the Author
Lori Ries was born in Syracuse, New York, the eldest of four children. She discovered a love for storytelling as a young child and wrote her first story when she was just ten years old. Lori lives in Tigard, Oregon, with her husband and three children.

Great choice for beginning readers.
By FIRR-Kids!
In this installment of Ben and Aggie's adventures, the duo is making a trip to the vet's office. The time has come for Aggie to be spayed. I was a little surprised the author chose that particular operation to introduce to kids, but when I gave it a bit more thought, it really is sensible. Spaying an neutering is both an important and common procedure, and one that children should be familiar with. Ben's mom explains in her matter-of-fact way that in addition to preventing puppies, this will help keep Aggie from getting sick when she gets older.

Both Ben and Aggie try very hard to be brave. Ben asks the vet a lot of questions to quell his fears, gives Aggie a big hug and goes home without her for one night. It is a long drive home without his friend and Ben's bed feels terribly empty that night.

When they pick up Aggie the next day, Ben expects her to be excited to see him, running to greet him and jumping around. But when he arrives, Aggie is lying very still, with a paper cone around her head. The vet explains that Aggie needs some quiet time while her incision heals. The paper cone is to keep her from licking her stitches (it's a dog thing). Ben busts out his stash of art supplies and transforms the paper cone into a fierce lion's mane. Each day, Aggie feels a bit better, until she is back to her old self.

This really is the perfect book for beginning readers. The sentences are short and the nice, bright illustrations fill most of each page. Plus, kids get to see that it's okay to be scared, and learn a little bit about responsible pet ownership. This really is a win-win for parents and children alike.

review from abookabookaday[...]
By Thomas F.
Reis and Dormer got it just right on this one. It's always good to see a children's book that talks about an experience that many children go through but is seldom written about. Nearly everybody who gets a new dog takes it to the vet to get spayed, but what is this experience like from the child's point of view? Well, for Ben it is slightly traumatic to have his beloved pet, Aggie, spend the night away from him only to return the next day as a "lamp head." Reis and Dormer capture the anxiety of the event with gentleness and humor, showing Ben making the best of a bad situation by turning Aggie's protective collar into a lion's mane. A great idea for a book, it as well executed as the first one in the series, Aggie and Ben. Will serve pet-owning parents well.

Bleeding Kansas: Contested Liberty in the Civil War Era, by Nicole Etcheson

Few people would have expected bloodshed in Kansas Territory. After all, it had few slaves and showed few signs that slavery would even flourish. But civil war tore this territory apart in the 1850s and 60s, and "Bleeding Kansas" became a forbidding symbol for the nationwide clash over slavery that followed.

Many free-state Kansans seemed to care little about slaves, and many proslavery Kansans owned not a single slave. But the failed promise of the Kansas-Nebraska Act-when fraud in local elections subverted the settlers' right to choose whether Kansas would be a slave or free state-fanned the flames of war. While other writers have cited slavery or economics as the cause of unrest, Nicole Etcheson seeks to revise our understanding of this era by focusing on whites' concerns over their political liberties. The first comprehensive account of "Bleeding Kansas" in more than thirty years, her study re-examines the debate over slavery expansion to emphasize issues of popular sovereignty rather than slavery's moral or economic dimensions.

The free-state movement was a coalition of settlers who favored black rights and others who wanted the territory only for whites, but all were united by the conviction that their political rights were violated by nonresident voting and by Democratic presidents' heavy-handed administration of the territories. Etcheson argues that participants on both sides of the Kansas conflict believed they fought to preserve the liberties secured by the American Revolution and that violence erupted because each side feared the loss of meaningful self-governance.

Bleeding Kansas is a gripping account of events and people-rabble-rousing Jim Lane, zealot John Brown, Sheriff Sam Jones, and others-that examines the social milieu of the settlers along with the political ideas they developed. Covering the period from the 1854 Kansas-Nebraska Act to the 1879 Exoduster Migration, it traces the complex interactions among groups inside and outside the territory, creating a comprehensive political, social, and intellectual history of this tumultuous period in the state's history.

As Etcheson demonstrates, the struggle over the political liberties of whites may have heightened the turmoil but led eventually to a broadening of the definition of freedom to include blacks. Her insightful re-examination sheds new light on this era and is essential reading for anyone interested in the ideological origins of the Civil War.

I thought the author bogged the reader down in the various versions of the Constitution. The Lecimpton, The English Compromise, The Wyandotte, etc. a chart summarizing the content, the date each was forwarded to Congress, and the result would have been helpful. More content about Quantrill would have been appreciated.

Order from Chaos
By P. Signor
Nicole Etcheson does a masterful job of weaving the chaotic detail of the early Kansas chaos into a cogent history. She convincingly demonstrates that the stories we heard in high school of the motivations underlying the conflict were over generalized at best, and usually misleading. Her narrative is lively and her insights are enlightening. This book should be read by anyone interested in the events leading to the Civil War.

One of the best books on the subject!
By James W. Durney
"Bleeding Kansas", 150 years after the event this phrase still causes strong feelings. Very few are neutral on Kansas even now. In trying to solve the question of slavery expanding into the territories, Congress left it to the settlers allowing Congress to maintain a fragile peace on the national level. On the Kansas Missouri border, this policy caused the Civil War come early and stay late. Popular Sovereignty pictured peaceful elections decided by local voters in a spirit of good fellowship and respect. Popular Sovereignty was stuffing the ballot box, intimidation, murder and small battles between "settlers" imported by both sides. Immigrant Aid Societies, Breecher's Bibles, Red Legs and Jayhawkers all entered our vocabulary. Jim Lane and John Brown become national figures. William Quantrill, Cole Younger and Frank James all start their travels in Kansas. While we have names and strong feelings on "Bleeding Kansas" or "The Troubles" as Missourians called this time, most of us do not have a good grasp of the events.
Nicole Etcheson fills this void. She manages to keep national politics, regional responses, local politics and the fighting in perspective without overwhelming the reader. With her sure narration, we walk the halls of Congress, sit in meetings at the White House, raise money for immigrant aid, ride with John Brown or just try to get a crop in. Along the way, she refuses to take side! The author uses each side's ideas and justifications for their actions without moralizing or condemning. This gives us a real insight into the thinking of Missourians crossing the border to vote in elections. While helping us to understand the actions of the New Englanders that contributed thousands of dollars to resettle "free soil" families while buying rifles. Neither side is completely right or wrong. Anti-slavery farmers are no less raciest than slave owners nor are they more likely to aid runaway slaves. This history of several political movements, a failing national policy, a shooting war and political double-dealing upsetting even by contemporary standards. A strong story line is the change in racial attitudes of the free soil movement. They move from a standard raciest set of laws to a state that almost welcomed Black settlers.
The book is never boring and all of the threads are easy to follow. A very enjoyable read, informative and leaves us with a balanced understanding of Bleeding Kansas. While detailed, the author manages to keep moving and never bogs down on a single point. The portraits of the participants, while often unflattering, are always honest. The illustrations are well chosen and in the right place. The footnotes are informative and have a page reference making them easy to find. The bibliography is excellent with more books on the subject than I would ever wish to read.
This is a book that all students of the Civil War need to read and is a required read for those interested in the Trans-Mississippi.

3D Games, Volume 2: Animation and Advanced Real-time Rendering, by Alan Watt, Fabio Policarpo

The second volume of the 3D Games series concentrates on the areas of advanced real-time rendering and animation. The computer games industry continues to consume techniques from off-line graphics as more and more powerful hardware facilitates this. With the launch of GeForce3 and X-box there is a massive leap forward in the techniques that can be implemented in real-time. The theory behind these techniques is addressed in the book, integrated with practical implementations using the accompanying FLY3D games engine. The game engine that accompanies the text (www.fly3d.com.br) is a second generation advanced engine that includes, for example, facial animation and full facilities for character animation. The book/CD package will appeal to students on computer games courses or on graphics courses with an emphasis on animation. It will also appeal to professional games developers and other games enthusiasts keen to understand the theory behind games development and create their own games.

From the Back Cover

The computer entertainment industry drives many of the advances in computing technology, and the second volume of 3D Games shows how to use advanced techniques in games technology and how these techniques can also be applied in other areas. The book concentrates on three main areas:

  • generic processes - the build process, real-time processes and software design

  • real-time rendering processes

  • character animation

The treatment of these topics is built around a specific games system, Fly3D SDK 2.0 (included on the accompanying CD-ROM). By rooting as many as possible of the techniques described within the book in a practical games system, the book is able to balance theory and practice.

As well as proving invaluable for professionals in the games industry, the book can be used for courses in games programming and development, animation, advanced graphics, and multimedia.

The potential of games to embrace other applications within computing is strong, with the advent of techniques for high scene complexity at low processing costs. The Fly3D engine is not only a vehicle for game creation, but has already been used to develop 3D Internet applications, architectural walkthroughs for CAAD and generic 3D visualisation. Workers in these areas will find the techniques described and accompanying software extremely useful.

Real Time Rendering & Games Technology
By Mark Carleton
Volume II picks up where Volume I left off by concentrating on more current real time rendering and game engine topics. Where Volume I painted a broad sweeping overview of real time graphics topics, Vol. II extends this and ties in more closely with how many of those ideas affect the actual creation of games in a real 3d games engine called 'fly3d2' included on CD with the text (a more current and improved version of 'fly3dsdk' from Vol. I). All source code is included for the engine and can be kept current via the website through downloads as it is steadily updated. ... the complete source code for all engine modules and utilities requires purchase of the book.
Mr. Policarpo the coauthor maintains the site and regularly contributes to threads so support remains current (a real blessing in a rapidly advancing science such as this).
Some of the topic covered include: Gamespace (BSP, PVS...) management, LightMap creation and challenges, Camera control, Collision Detection and Response, Path Planning and AI, Shader and TexureMapping with various effects, Character Animation, Skeletal Mesh Animation and related issues as well as the fly3d2.0 environment and support and tutorials to play with and to make these ideas real...

The book covers most of the features include in the engine and anticipates extensions that may some day be added as well. The engine design is modular and lends itself to the creation of plugins that can leverage classes already included or that are completely new created by the user. Users can design levels, characters, objects, and control how they interact with the engine. Tutorials are included in the book as well as on the website with new ones being added by members of the community quite regularly. The modular design (in C++) and utilities that adapt Microsoft's Visual Studio and Discreet's 3dsmax (as well as Quake level conveter and a few others) allow seamless integration of these tools into the environment for a wealth of creative possibilities.
The text is clearly and concisely written and Mr. Watt demonstrates a commanding expertise in these topics without a lot of gimmicky embellishments or self-aggrandizement common in other more fly-by-night texts. This is a real hardcover edtion made to last by a quality computer technology publisher. Watt obviously maintains a close relationship with coauthor Policarpo the designer of the fly3d engine so writing ties in well with the fly3d platform but is not limited by or to it.
I cheerfully recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning the sometimes difficult and challenging topics of game creation, expansion and maintenance. It is a demanding subject not for the weak of heart that can be difficult and time consuming to master. I've found there are a lot of other books out there that promise to deliver by tempting the potential buyer with the ease and completeness their books will include; however, I have not come across any others as yet that come close to the coverage and approach this (and the previous) volume supplies.
Before I bought this book I already had tried other approaches to learning this material but found the all the books I'd bought offered poor to none of the support and potential that 3d Games Vol. II together with the fly3d platform delivers. To learn this material one needs to be able to play with the ideas and be excited about the possibilities and have the ability to play with real tools in a real games environment. 3d Games Vol. II is concise, helpful, well-written, and enjoys a small but dedicated community available through the website.

This book is a huge help to game developers. I found it a great read while writing my first game engine. It covers so much stuff it makes you want to try and add it all to your game! I am really happy with this book.
