RISE TO REBELLION is set in the tumultuous years leading up to the American Revolution in 1776. In chapters, narrated by a wide variety of characters both British and colonist, listeners are made to understand the complex issues and circumstances that are leading to the inevitable war.
Benjamin Franklin, the colonist's senior diplomat, is living in London in 1770 as the novel opens. In his wise observations and conversations with his British counterparts, Franklin relates the growing hunger for freedom that is building in the colonies. Already in 1770 some of the more radical of the colonists, such as Sam Adams, are doing all they can to rouse their fellow citizens to active rebellion. Others, such as John Adams, are more cautious about rushing to war, though we see their patience wear thin when they realize that the British have no intention of giving in to even their smallest demands for everyday freedoms.
RISE TO REBELLION succeeds not only by dramatizing the events of the time— The Boston Tea Party, and The Battles of Concord and Bunker Hill, most prominently —but also by engaging us in the personal lives of the main characters. The son of Michael Shaara, author of the classic historical novel The Killer Angels (1974), seems to have inherited his father's talent. The younger Shaara also writes meticulously researched and compelling historical novels. His latest brings a fresh perspective to some of the familiar figures associated with the Revolutionary War Making excellent use of a you-are-there approach, Shaara focuses on a handful of prominent historical figures, including Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, John and Abigail Adams, and British general Thomas Gage. We witness the American colonies experiencing growth pains and an increasing desire for independence and the corresponding British insensitivity to the needs and wants of the colonists; we observe coalescing resistance to such insensitivity, verbalized best by Franklin when he says to the British public in general, "With your vast army and your great navy, you may have the power. But you do not have the right." As in all good historical fiction, Shaara's novel gives historical figures flesh-and-blood viability. At nearly 500 pages, this novel requires a major investment in reading time, yet it is an investment painlessly made for it pays profitable dividends. Brad Hooper

Great balance between historical facts and personal emotions

While heavy in historical facts and details regarding the American Revolution the book strikes a perfect balance between that and insights into the characters emotions, pulling the veil from what really motivated some of them to act a certain way. It helps the reader better understand the complex circumstances around the events, the blind spots and shortcomings; it explain why sometimes they failed when all involved were sure of success and vice versa. I also liked that the book does not vilify the other side, but rather try to explain their actions by looking at the situation from their point of view. All in all a worthy book to read!

Fantastic novel of the American Revolution!

"Now, after nearly two years, the conflicts between the citizens of Boston and the soldiers had become more than the unpleasant argument, the occasional barroom brawl. The discipline of troops had begun to slip; men became frustrated by the hostility around them, the taunts and minor assaults, and when the officers were not close, many of the soldiers had begun to strike back."
Opening with the skirmish often called "The Boston Massacre", Shaara puts the reader smack dab in the middle of a conflict that led to the American Revolution. I've read many Shaara books, and Rise to Rebellion definitely meets the bar set by his others. In typical Shaara fashion, he divides the book into chapters presenting the points of view of various central characters. Here, to name a few, are John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Lt. General Thomas Gage and George Washington. Having the perspectives of a British officer and also Ben Franklin (situated in London), gives the reader a well-rounded look at events from both sides of the ocean.
Well researched, I felt Shaara gave a good sense of who these characters were. You could sense the passion of Adams and the wit of Franklin. In fact, I couldn't help but cheer when Franklin confronts Loyalist Dickinson with the hard truth of King George's feelings towards to the colonists. In addition, the opening battle scenes of this war were done from both the strategic angle and from the personal vantage of the characters Shaara portrays. That, in my opinion, is the best way to help the reader understand the human and technical aspect of war. It's also one of the reasons I enjoy Shaara's historical novels so much.
Happily, Shaara's accounts of the American Revolution are not finished for me. I can't wait to read the next in this two-part series, entitled "The Glorious Cause".

The Best Historical Fiction Writer Today

Jeff Shaara is (in my opinion) the best historical fiction writer today. I have read several of his books and each one has absolutely gripped me - and this book is absolutely fascinating reading as well.
Shaara covers the period 1770-1776 through the eyes, thoughts, and actions of Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, George Washington, and General Gage. When he writes through these characters, it is as though he BECOMES them! The writing is so vividly personal that it is as though the reader is transported back in time and is actually experiencing the events as they happen. This is the way history should be (read) taught! Absolutely amazing writing. Shaara is my new favorite history writer (sorry James A. Michener).
This book reads like a novel, and if the reader pays attention, a lot of history is learned in the process. I will definitiely purchase the sequel (The Glorious Cause).
