Not worth what I paid and not a real book.

If you buy it understand it is a tiny 3 inch book with about one or two sentences per page (many pages have no text at all). So little serious content as to be considered a checkout counter toy. Many of the ideas are like take vitamins. Or you've heard it before- make associations, repeat it, etc. Let's face it, it's a bathroom "book" that I would be angry to find in my stocking at Christmas.

Buy a real book instead. There are plenty of fine books on remembering people.

If you are taking world regions with John Boyer, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK (used). There is an access code that you will need in order to register with the class's website and a used book means a used access code and no access for you. Buying new is not a problem.

This is the most wonderful textbook I have ever read. I will keep mine forever as it is highly informative and hilarious at the same time. Boyer and the Plaid Avenger make learning about the world fun.

Not your everyday comic book, that is!

No, it's not even a comic book. Professor John Boyer [aka Plaid Avenger] has written a very succinct and compelling textbook that pretty much covers what is going in the world and why. It is The Book on the global current events. I am not going to write a long review, since most of others reviews here have done fairly good job at that, especially the reviews coming from students of his class. In our flawed education system, knowledge of foreigners is almost non- existent, and this books does everything it can to correct that.

Because the writing style is not of some high dry septuagenarian professor, even high schoolers can benefit very much from this text. And because it is so full facts and up to date info on current events and provides reasoning about why and how some things are happening in today's globalized world [globalization is one of the underlying themes], I can very easily see this book used as a complementary or even as major text in a humanities class or even a political science class [even graduate ?].

Definitely a must buy, especially for American students.

This book was required reading for a Global Civilization class that was mandatory. I cared little about world politics, but thanks to this textbook, which was easy to read, understandable, and at times outright hilarious, I have a new passion for what is going on in the world. Every textbook should read like this one. The cover catches everyone's attention. My sons spied it on my coffee table and said, "Wow, what's this?" With all the fun, there is serious information inside. The Plaid Avenger also has a website where you can access Podcasts, or as he calls them "Plaidcasts" for more recent input on what is going on in the world today. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, student or otherwise, who wants more info on the world and how societies came to be, and how this relates to today's world.

Another hit DK lego book in our house

My son (age 8) has several of these DK Lego books. I have reviewed all of them and would give them (and this one) 6 stars if I could. Amazon has excellent prices on them and they are well worth it if you have a young person who likes Lego's. This one, like most, comes with a special edition Lego mini-figure (even though the product page shows the insert area blanked out). It has the entire Ninjago universe laid out in extremely colorful and detailed photos. Even one of the small bagged Target sets that my son got a year ago gets a whole page to itself. Very detailed photos but more importantly a lot of written material as well associated with each page, set, and figure. My son lugs these around the house and prefers to read them to watching TV. He likes to read about the little tidbits associated with the characters and sets, and although not perhaps incredibly intellectually stimulating, it is reading and most importantly he does it on his own, is interested in the subject matter, and likes to talk about what the books are telling him. (I will also admit that I have read them all to, just because they are that well done.)

We are over two months into the Lego Batman DK book and he still reads it daily. Star Wars and Lego Harry Potter are still by his bed and get read weekly and they are about a year old in our house. This one being new has displaced them on the top of the heap. At the price Amazon discounts these they are well worth. I highly recommend. Also Scholastic publishes a similar looking and titled book on the Lego ninjago universe also with free figure. The DK book however has the actual Lego sets in it as well as descriptions about the characters and ninja go universe. The scholastic book just has descriptions on the characters and doesn't actually feature any Lego sets. We have both in our house and the DK book is the nicer of the two in my opinion.

Lego is on to a good thing here.

Being an old lady, I cannot say I loved the book, but the 8-year-old boy I bought it for does love it and is always eager to discuss the merits of any and all of the items in it. He is now eager to go on to the more recent version, which will no doubt arouse his desire to buy more sets of legos. He has the story of the relationships of the characters and their adventures practically memorized, although the story line is simple and seems to me an endless (and boring) round of fighting, contrived just to bring in new characters, their weapons, and their frightful vehicles. The boy, however, is at that Calvin (from Calvin and Hobbes) age where explosions and fighting have captured his imagination. The company has a good thing going here; like barbie dolls, there is no foreseeable limit to the future invention of new tiny characters, their equipment, and their vehicles, and, of course, the money brought in from their sale.

The book is printed on good, shiny paper, with bright colors and a lot of details. I found the layout of pictures and explanations well-done, and I admit that I did enjoy the cleverness of many of the made-up names (many of them being over the boy's head, he being an ESL learner), as they referenced figures in classical mythology, Japanese words, and other things hinting of wider reading on the part of the writer(s).

Perfect for Ninjago fans!

Bought this for my 5yr old son who, as a Lego enthusiast, became an instant Lego Ninjago fan after finding episodes of it on Netflix. Now I feel it's relevant to point out he doesn't watch a lot of tv, and I always try to limit the content to his age, so I was worried with a Y7 rating for the show it would be over his head, but being lego characters really helped to diminish the fighting & bad guys to a more little-kid friendly level. However, I think he had a hard time keeping all the characters & story lines straight, so I started searching for a book. We had received the Lego Batman guide book that's similar to this as a gift awhile back, so when I saw this one I thought it would be a hit. I definitely UNDERESTIMATED just how much he would like this. Over a year later he still looks at this book about 3 - 4 times a week and has become a Ninjago character expert. I've since been searching for new versions that will include the newer seasons, as this one is only season 1 and 2. It doesn't cover much of the story line, but it shows all the lego vehicles & sets associated with certain scenes and episodes (which is good and bad, becuase in the back there's a full list of all the ninjago sets by year and product number . . .for easy ordering for mom or dad!! yikes.) Anyways, if your child is a fan of Lego Ninjago, I'd recommend this book.
