Review

“I'm particularly impressed with the book's strong emphasis on why journalism matters. I've read many other news writing textbooks and they tend to pay little if no attention to this important question. The book also is a gold mine of great original tips about writing and storytelling. The authors provide plenty of fresh insights helpful not only to students, but working journalists as well.”

Farce meets gothic trappings in small Irish town
By Booked for life
I bought this book expecting it to be full of gothic and mystery elements, having read other LeFanu.

I have read LeFanu's ghost stories, and the novels "Uncle Silas," and "Wylder's Hand." "Uncle Silas" is a suspense classic. "Wylder's Hand" is less of a page-turner, but has interesting characters in the mystery. Think of Dicken's "Mystery of Edwin Drood" with Wilkie Collins's dominant female characters.

"House by the Churchyard" starts with graves, re-opened crypts, and mystery. LeFanu promptly drops it to pile farce upon farce.

Much of the book relates how the residents of this small town wage "war" on each other, similar to "Lucia and Mapp." Set in the 1700s, in a small town near Dublin, featuring officers in the local regiment, the book brings high and low characters together.

There is a wealthy spinster whose charities are ill-considered. There is a mysterious stranger who has moved to town, who is surrounded by further shadows. Chapter 11 is frequently taken and printed as a ghost story--in the context of the book, the story is an extended example of how servants chatter.

We have lovers, competing small-town doctors, fortune-hunters, nubile and not-so-nubile heiresses, a professional blackmailer, debtors, rapscallions, timid lovers, a priest, an unworldly pastor, an amateur blackmailer, and some nice rabbitty little wives who are under the thumbs of their "lord and master" husbands. There is a hilarious duel-gone-wrong and drowning that never really happens.

The introduction suggests that LeFanu wrote "House by the Churchyard" out of nostalgia for the town he lived in as a youth. I think that this book is better characterized as English humor, a la "Three Men in a Boat," than as English horror. It is very readable.

I'm about half-way through, and I have found that the humor/horror ratio is about 80/20. I suppose there are still plenty of chapters in which to pack his murder mysteries towards the end.

"House by the Churchyard"--It's a wild read, for fans of Dickens, Collins, even "Lucia" novels.

Neither gothic nor mysterious
By jaydynomite
Billed as being a supernatural thriller, this awkward novel fails to be a murder mystery, ghost story, and gothic work simultaneously. It has elements of all three, but lacks any true sense of identity. There are a few minor instances of the paranormal, but nothing relating to the plot. There is no lingering dread, no menacing villain, and no fair damsel in distress. In fact, there is barely a mystery at all, and certainly not one worth caring about.
Basically, this novel is a boring jumble of stereotypical characters spreading gossip amongst themselves in a parody of Dickens' sadly wordy and overrated style.

LeFanu is better at the short story medium
By Jason C. Eckhardt
LeFanu is better at the short story medium. His affection for the setting of the novel, in a small town outside Dublin, is clear in every line; but the novel rambles into and out of vignettes and different characters. I found it hard to finish-a shame as I am a big fan of his short works. Admirers of "Carmilla" and "Green Tea" might want to avoid this.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In the vein of Serial and Making a Murderer, John Grisham’s first work of nonfiction will terrify anyone who believes in the presumption of innocence. Impeccably researched, grippingly told, filled with eleventh-hour drama, it’s a book no American can afford to miss.

In the town of Ada, Oklahoma, Ron Williamson was going to be the next Mickey Mantle. But on his way to the Big Leagues, Ron stumbled, his dreams broken by drinking, drugs, and women. Then, on a winter night in 1982, not far from Ron’s home, a young cocktail waitress named Debra Sue Carter was savagely murdered. The investigation led nowhere. Until, on the flimsiest evidence, it led to Ron Williamson. The washed-up small-town hero was charged, tried, and sentenced to death—in a trial littered with lying witnesses and tainted evidence that would shatter a man’s already broken life, and let a true killer go free.

Praise for The Innocent Man

“Grisham has written both an American tragedy and his strongest legal thriller yet, all the more gripping because it happens to be true.”—Entertainment Weekly

“Grisham has crafted a legal thriller every bit as suspenseful and fast-paced as his bestselling fiction.”—The Boston Globe

“A gritty, harrowing true-crime story.”—Time

“A triumph.”—The Seattle Times

Amazon.com Review
John Grisham tackles nonfiction for the first time with The Innocent Man, a true tale about murder and injustice in a small town (that reads like one of his own bestselling novels). The Innocent Man chronicles the story of Ron Williamson, how he was arrested and charged with a crime he did not commit, how his case was (mis)handled and how an innocent man was sent to death row. Grisham's first work of nonfiction is shocking, disturbing, and enthralling--a must read for fiction and nonfiction fans. We had the opportunity to talk with John Grisham about the case and the book, read his responses below. --Daphne Durham 20 Second Interview: A Few Words with John Grisham

Q: After almost two decades of writing fiction, what compelled you to write non-fiction, particularly investigative journalism?
A: I was never tempted to write non-fiction, primarily because it's too much work. However, obviously, I love a good legal thriller, and the story of Ron Williamson has all the elements of a great suspenseful story.

Q: Why this case?
A: Ron Williamson and I are about the same age and we both grew up in small towns in the south. We both dreamed of being major league baseball players. Ron had the talent, I did not. When he left a small town in 1971 to pursue his dreams of major league glory, many thought he would be the next Mickey Mantle, the next great one from the state of Oklahoma. The story of Ron ending up on Death Row and almost being executed for a murder he did not commit was simply too good to pass up.

Q: How did you go about your research?
A: I started with his family. Ron is survived by two sisters who took care of him for most of his life. They gave me complete access to the family records, photographs, Ron's mental health records, and so on. There was also a truckload of trial transcripts, depositions, appeals, etc., that took about 18 months to organize and review. Many of the characters in the story are still alive and I traveled to Oklahoma countless times to interview them.

Q: Did your training as a lawyer help you?
A: Very much so. It enabled me to understand the legal issues involved in Ron's trial and his appeals. It also allowed me, as it always does, to be able to speak the language with lawyers and judges.

Q: Throughout your book you mention, The Dreams of Ada: A True Story of Murder, Obsession, and a Small Town. How did you come across that book, and how did it impact your writing The Innocent Man?
A: Several of the people in Oklahoma I met mentioned The Dreams of Ada to me, and I read it early on in the process. It is an astounding book, a great example of true crime writing, and I relied upon it heavily during my research. Robert Mayer, the author, was completely cooperative, and kept meticulous notes from his research 20 years earlier. Many of the same characters are involved in his story and mine.

Q: You take on some pretty controversial and heated topics in your book--the death penalty, prisoner’s rights, DNA analysis, police conduct, and more--were any of your own beliefs challenged by this story and its outcome?
A: None were challenged, but my eyes were open to the world of wrongful convictions. Even as a former criminal defense attorney, I had never spent much time worrying about wrongful convictions. But, unfortunately, they happen all the time in this country, and with increasing frequency.

Q: So many of the key players in this case are either still in office or practicing attorneys. Many family members and friends still live in the same small town. How do you think The Innocent Man will impact this community and other small rural towns as they struggle with the realities of the justice system?
A: Exonerations seem to be happening weekly. And with each one of them, the question is asked--how can an innocent man be convicted and kept in prison for 20 years? My book is the story of only one man, but it is a good example of how things can go terribly wrong with our judicial system. I have no idea how the book will be received in the small town of Ada, Oklahoma, or any other town.

Q: What do you hope your readers will take away from The Innocent Man?
A: A better understanding of how innocent people can be convicted, and a greater concern for the need to reimburse and rehabilitate innocent men after they have been released.

From Publishers Weekly
Grisham's first work of nonfiction focuses on the tragedy of Ron Williamson, a baseball hero from a small town in Oklahoma who winds up a dissolute, mentally unstable Major League washout railroaded onto death row for a hometown rape and murder he did not commit. Judging by this author-approved abridgment, Grisham has chosen to present Williamson's painful story (and that of his equally innocent "co-conspirator," Dennis Fritz) as straightforward journalism, eschewing the more familiar "nonfiction novel" approach with its reconstructed dialogues and other adjustments for dramatic purpose. This has resulted in a book that, while it includes such intriguing elements as murder, rape, detection and judicial injustice, consists primarily of objective reportage, albeit shaded by the now-proven fact of Williamson's innocence. The absence of dialogue or character point of view could make for a rather bland audio. Boutsikaris avoids that by reverting to what might be called old-fashioned round-the-campfire storytelling, treating the lengthy exposition to vocal interpretations, subtle and substantial. He narrates the events leading up to the 1982 rape and murder of a young cocktail waitress with a mixture of suspicion and curiosity, moving on to astonishment at the prosecution's use of deceit and false testimony to convict Williamson and Fritz and, eventually, elation at the exoneration of the two innocent men. Throughout, he maintains an appealing conversational tone, an effect made all the more remarkable by the book's nearly total absence of conversation.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Many of the literary skills that have established John Grisham at the forefront of mainstream legal thrillers (The Firm, The Pelican Brief) find their way into his first nonfiction brief: a razor-sharp sense of right and wrong; an eye for the unjustly accused; and a finely tuned legal mind. The majority of reviewers find Grisham making the transition to "real" life with ease: he turns out a compelling version of this confounding miscarriage of justice. Other critics find that Grisham's narrow view of the case undercuts its complexity and the philosophical issue at hand. In the end, reviewers' politics color their assessments. To most, it seems all to the good that über?best seller Grisham is putting his weight behind this thinly veiled treatise against abuses of the death penalty.

Maybe capital punishment is NOT the answer after all.....
By D. Johnson
Reading this book has been a watershed moment for me. I knew the writings of John Grisham well, having read several of his earlier books. That this book was non-fiction I hadn't heard until I actually started reading it. All I knew when I bought it was that it concerned a criminal case that employees of my own former employer were involved in (the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, or OSBI). I felt a strong attraction to read any book that concerned the OSBI as I worked there nearly 19 years in the 1980s and 90s. I vaguely remember the criminal case in question, a the murder happened almost immediately after I began work there. Now that I have finished the book, my mind is at unrest. Every OSBI employee the book mentioned I knew, and some of them I saw on almost a daily basis. I always thought that from knowing them that way, I could guess their working style. If this book is to be believed, I didn't know them at all. The agents were all law enforcement agents through and through, but if their behavior in interrogating suspects is accurate, I am sadly disappointed in my friendships. Due to the two "main" suspects in the case who finally after many years of being locked up in prison for something it was eventually proven they didn't do (and one actually facing the death penalty) I am in the process of possibly reconsidering my views on the death penalty itself. I always approved before, what with working so long alongside law enforcement (I worked in a clerical capacity as administrative support and finally in the Human Resources Unit) but if false confessions are indeed taken as gospel and the confessor or suspect is found guilty in a death penalty case, we are knowingly leading an innocent person to die, while letting the actual perpetrator go free. During the numerous appeals that automatically come after a guilty verdict, most of the time those are sped through and none of the physical evidence is rechecked to ensure accuracy. This book is making me reconsider old friendships also, and I don't know how to ask anyone if the behavior is close to being accurate.

Important Story, Fair-to-Middling Writing
By RZK
The Innocent Man is the true story of Ron Williamson, who spent 18 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. Ron was a severely troubled man, whose early dreams of playing professional baseball were trashed and he spent most of his adult life battling mental illness and addiction, as well as being behind bars for the majority of it. While I did not find this work of non-fiction nearly as riveting as Grisham's fiction novels, I think the author did a good job of not only highlighting the injustices in our so-called justice system, but also the failure in America to adequately treat mental illness and addiction, as well as calling into question the ethicality of employing capital punishment when so many wrongful convictions are given out. Generally when I read true crime, I'm there more for the details of the case than the personal story. I found it to be the opposite with this book. I don't think Grisham is quite "there" yet, with his handling of the more technical aspects of the case. At times I really had to plod through. But Ron's story hooked me from the beginning and I was compelled to finish it out for him. My only other complaint is that I personally feel the author revealed too much too soon. Going in, all I knew was that an innocent man was sentenced to death for a crime he didn't commit. I did not know if he ever got out or was actually killed on death row, I didn't know if the real killer(s) was ever found or convicted. It is my opinion that Grisham could have revealed these points in a different way and at a different time, to make the book more interesting. Stay away from the pictures if you don't want spoilers! But overall this is a decent book, and Ron's story is worth knowing, so read it for that alone.

An Important Book

`The Innocent Man' refers to the true story of Ron Williamson, a young man from a small town in Oklahoma who was wrongly convicted of murder back in the eighties. Along with friend Dennis Fritz, the two became the prime suspects. They were tried, convicted, and incarcerated for a crime in which the prosecutors said was overwhelmed with evidence, though in reality, consisted of evidence that was fabricated and practically nonexistent.

After living the life of an admired high school student and baseball hero, Ron's careless off the field behavior led prosecutors to reel him in as main suspect for the murder of a pretty hometown girl. He was then subjected to years of harassment and litigation by authorities who blatantly ignored the existence of real evidence pointing elsewhere, a legal system that also ignored the progressive mental illness that inflicted Ron throughout the trials, throughout latter life as well.

Though Ron was often a known deviant and rebel rouser in his younger years, one who the local police saw as trouble, the fact is, he wasn't a murderer. It's good to see that justice finally prevailed once the case left the ignorance of the small town courtroom and caught the eyes of a more insightful legal system. That's what saved Ron's life and reputation.

`The Innocent Man' is an important book for at least two reasons. 1) It's good that John Grisham was able to depict the truths about the legal system and how easy it is for an innocent person to find him/herself a convict on death row, mainly because of the incompetent and fraudulent activities of those supposedly there to enforce law and order. 2) The story of Ron Williamson is such a travesty of justice that it's good the truth behind it was put into proper perspective for all to read, and that the guilty and irresponsible parties involved could read it as well, and see their names mentioned and characters described and ridiculed for what they truly were.

When it comes to inventing things, and making bad smells and big bangs, half the children in the country would love to be scientists. From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6-A colorful volume that is wide in scope but shallow in content. Ardley introduces many areas of science from electricity, to sound and music, to motion and machines. Each activity is given between half a page and two pages, and is illustrated with bright, full-color photographs that clearly show each step in the process. Two or three sentences summarize what takes place, but little of the science is explained. For instance, in "Fly a hot-air balloon" readers are told that hot air rises, but not why. The book does do a good job of presenting science as enjoyable and exciting. It could be useful if supplemented by titles such as Stephen P. Kramer's How to Think Like a Scientist (HarperCollins, 1987) and books on specific areas of interest, such as those found in the "Eyewitness Science" series.
Janet K. Hamilton, Museum of Science, Boston

From Booklist
Gr. 3-5. Many of these 101 science experiments are great, but there's also plenty of standard fare, such bottle gardens, construction of a circuit, and the perennial erupting volcano. What makes this book special is the clean, simple format with equally simple instructions. The experiments are grouped into 11 categories, including water and liquids, electricity, motion and machines, and the senses. Most of the experiments are laid out in seven steps or less. Crisp, color photographs and concise captions make each step easy to follow. Children of various ages are shown performing many of the procedures. A warning about being a safe scientist is fairly inconspicuous on the verso of the title page; a symbol for adult supervision is described there and appears throughout the text where cutting, heating, and potentially harmful substances are required. Young scientists should find plenty of ideas for experiments and activities that can be done with ordinary household items and found materials. Denia Hester

Great science book!
By AmBuer Edenburn
We got this book for my daughter who can not get enough of the science stuff!! She really loves and understands science. It motivates her to constantly learn more and to even teach what she has learned to everyone she comes in contact with. She is almost 13 and loves this book. She does experiments with her friends. It's so refreshing to see teen girls actually interacting with each other, working through experiments, and having fun while learning rather than "interacting" by being in the same room on the phone or tablet. I definitely recommend this book to anyone!

Great for any age
By Amazon Customer
This was a very costly book but so comprehensive that if you followed it you would "Succeed in Business Without Even Trying". It is expensive, but a tremendous teaching tool and a awesome tool if you are even remotely interested in entrepreneurship of any kind. It is geared for pre-teens and teens which makes it all the better for those of us who like to think we are teens but pretty much into our years. It is a textbook, not a fast read. But very useful.

Low Vision Rehabilitation: A Practical Guide for Occupational Therapists, by Mitchell Scheiman OD FCOVD FAAO, Maxine Scheiman, Stephen G

Low vision rehabilitation is rapidly growing as a specialty practice for occupational therapists. This growth requires practical, evidence-based information on the evaluation and treatment of the effects of low vision on occupational performance. Responding to this need, Low Vision Rehabilitation: A Practical Guide for Occupational Therapists blends standards of practice that have been developed over 50 years by low vision therapists and optometrists, with the latest scientific research and the unique perspective of occupational therapists.

Low Vision Rehabilitation presents an emerging model in which occupational therapists practice as part of a team of vision rehabilitation professionals serving adults with low vision. Occupational therapists offer a unique contribution to the vision rehabilitation team, with a focus on meaningful occupational goals, the incorporation of occupation into therapy, and the orchestration of environmental, social, and non-visual personal factors into a treatment plan. Mitchell Scheiman, Maxine Scheiman, and Stephen Whittaker have developed a practical and straightforward text outlining an evaluation approach to interventions that focus on recovering occupational performance in adults.

Review

“Each section is full of information supported by research and practical experience. Appendices provide relevant resource material for those venturing into this area of practice. The content is very detailed and helpful in setting the stage for the work of the low vision therapist and for how an occupational therapist can it into this practice area. This is a very comprehensive practice guide for occupational therapists encountering low vision clients who need help to dress the issues from a low vision rehabilitation perspective or understand what is happening physically and psychologically.”

— Marie Gage,Canadian Journal of Occupational Therapy

“The strength of this book compared to other low vision texts, is that it was written specifically for occupational therapists….The text is a worthwhile read for the novice low vision occupational therapist who wishes to gain a general overview of vision loss secondary to age-related conditions.”

— Beth Barstow, MS, OTR/L, SCLV,Occupational Therapy in Health Care

“This book provides all the tools necessary to competently perform those complex assessments and treatment plans. If occupational therapists truly embrace visual rehabilitation, we will have a wonderful new resource to help our low-vision patients. This book does a nice job of making the optics and science easy to understand. I strongly recommend it, not only to occupational therapists, but also to eye doctors who treat low-vision patients.”

— Jim Hayes, MD,Ocular Surgery News

“Although this book is specifically written for occupational therapists, primary care providers and students will also find value in reading it. The authors are well known and respected experts in the field. Appropriate and helpful diagrams and photographs are included. Important and practical information is added to accentuate the learning process. A helpful section on billing and insurance is also included. Even though this book is geared towards occupational therapists, as a primary eye care provider, I found it helpful and educational. It goes into great detail on the subjects of testing and most importantly the many treatment options available to help most low vision patients today. I plan to use some of the concepts and useful guides in my practice.”

Barbara Smith OTR/L's Review
By Barbara Smith
I started working as a low vision occupational therapist after taking an online course two years ago. I have found this book to be an extremely useful supplement to my training. The optometrist author and his occupational therapist wife make a wonderful team in writing a book that specifically tells a novice in this speciality area how to evaluate and treat patients with a variety of visual disabilities. My only criticism is that if I bought every evaluation tool suggested, I would go broke. However, if readers use shopping discretion, this book will serve them well as a frequently used reference tool.

This book is great for background information and has a lot of information on various eye diseases and conditions. It is a nice book to refer back to but not sure if it's easy to follow if your looking for specific treatment approaches. You would have to read a lot to find treatment options.

Universal Man: The Lives of John Maynard Keynes, by Richard Davenport-Hines

In Universal Man, noted biographer and historian Richard Davenport-Hines revives our understanding of John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946), the twentieth century’s most charismatic and revolutionary economist. Keynes helped FDR launch the New Deal, saved Britain from financial crisis twice over the course of two World Wars, and instructed Western nations on how to protect themselves from revolutionary unrest, economic instability, high unemployment, and social dissolution. Isaiah Berlin called Keynes “the cleverest man I ever knew”—both “superior and intellectually awe-inspiring.” Eric Hobsbawm, the twentieth century’s preeminent historian, considered him as influential as Lenin, Stalin, Roosevelt, Hitler, Churchill, Gandhi, and Mao. Keynes was nothing less than the Adam Smith of his time: his General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, published in 1936, became the most important economics book of the twentieth century, as important as Smith’s Wealth of Nations in inaugurating an economic era.

Keynes’s brilliant ideas made possible 35 years of prosperity after the Second World War, the most sustained period of rapid expansion in history. And now, and in the wake of the 2008 global economic collapse, he is once again shaping our world. Every day, we are likely to hear about “Keynesian economics” or the “Keynesian Revolution,” terms that testify to his continuing influence on both economic theory and government policies. Indeed, with the thorough discrediting of his opponents—Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman, Alan Greenspan, and other supporters of the notion that capitalism is self-regulating, and needs no government intervention—nations across the world are turning to Keynes’s signature innovations: above all that governments must involve themselves in their economies to stave off financial collapse.

Previous biographies have explored Keynes economic thought at great length and often in the jargon of the discipline. Universal Man is the first accessible biography of Keynes, and reveals Keynes as much more than an economist. Like many Englishmen of his class and era, Keynes compartmentalized his life. Accordingly, Davenport-Hines views Keynes through multiple windows, as a youthful prodigy, a powerful government official, an influential public man, a bisexual living in the shadow of Oscar Wilde’s persecution, a devotee of the arts, and an international statesman of great renown. Delving into Keynes’s experiences and thought, Davenport-Hines shows us a man who was equally at ease socialising with the Bloomsbury Group as he was persuading heads of state to adopt his policies. Exploring the desires and experiences that compelled Keynes to innovate, Davenport-Hines is the first to argue that Keynesian economics has an aesthetic basis.

In this book we come to understand not just the most enduringly influential economist of the modern era, but one of the most gifted and vital men of our times: a disciplined logician with a capacity for glee who persuaded people, seduced them, subverted old ideas, and installed new ones; a man whose high brilliance did not give people vertigo, but clarified and lengthened their perspectives. Engaging, learned, and sparkling with wit and insight, Universal Man is the perfect match for its subject.

Review
Wall Street Journal
“Quite short, readable and a lot of fun in a rather tawdry sort of way, it is the ideal companion for a weekend break or a short holiday. Certainly it is the best biography now available for noneconomists.”

Forbes.com
“Richard Davenport-Hines has given us an internationally acclaimed book that will reward its readers both in pleasure and in virtue.”

Economist
“A biography of John Maynard Keynes without the economics may seem like ‘Hamlet’ without the prince. But Richard Davenport-Hines has set out to write such a book, and the result is utterly absorbing.... Davenport-Hines manages to pick out little-known stories, brilliant details and curiosities, relayed with affection.... [An] accomplished biography.”

The Times Book of the Week (UK)
“For the reader already acquainted with the economics, or indeed not especially interested, there is a lot of fun to be had in this book.”

Financial Times
“With wit and grace, as well as a good deal of scholarly digging, the author looks at Keynes in seven distinct but overlapping guises.... [I]t is always, in Davenport-Hines’s hands, a story told in an incisive and thoughtful way.... The book conveys its own vision of this wholly extraordinary and undeniably idiosyncratic figure with persuasive artistry and conviction.”

Spectator (UK)
“[F]ascinating reading.... [Davenport-Hines] has understood his subject better than any previous biographer.”

Daily Mail, UK
“Never has the biography of an economist been so gripping, so witty or, indeed, so racy: Keynes had countless flings with men before, as his biographer puts it, ‘he got the knack of heterosexuality’ and enjoyed a happy marriage.”

New Statesman (UK)
“Richard Davenport-Hines’ fine series of sketches of Keynes makes a clear case that he was a great man — intellectually dazzling and original, generous-spirited, industrious, astonishingly wide-ranging and largely effective.... Davenport-Hines has produced a very readable single volume that succeeds...by providing a professional, temperate and clear account of a gripping subject.”

Toronto Star, Canada
“[T]his marvelous book is a high achievement: It shows us Keynes as altruist, boy prodigy, official, public man, art connoisseur and envoy. He was a gay man who switched over when he met the Russian dancer Lydia Lopokova, an enjoyer of life who worked himself to death, an economic savior, a truly great man who never imposed a dull moment.”

Choice
“This book is organized in an unusual but very effective way…The result is that the intellectual, social, professional, and personal aspects of Keynes are described and analyzed both independently and as they interrelated to create a complex and brilliant thinker. This is a splendid biography that will fascinate the general reader and give new insight to the scholar. Highly recommended.”

Los Angeles Times
“Universal Man ranges effortlessly across Keynes’s overstuffed life.”

Mail on Sunday (UK)
“Davenport-Hines is incapable of writing a dull sentence. His prose sings, his curiosity is omnivorous and he has a piercingly sharp eye for detail.... Has there ever been a more entertaining biography of an economist? I doubt it.”

Sunday Times (UK)
“[A]n amusing, elegant and provocative writer...great fun. By focusing on Keynes as a private man and public figure rather than an academic economist, it is possible to see him as the last and greatest flowering of Edwardian Liberalism.”

Literary Review (UK)
“[A] first-class book, which I cannot praise highly enough.... Keynes possessed a largeness of mind that one can only call noble and a generosity of spirit that was truly princely. This admirable book does him justice.”

The Observer (UK)
“Treating Keynes’s lives as interesting and valuable for their own sake, and not just as a means to his economics, gives them an extra vividness.... With a keen eye for telling detail and social connections, Davenport-Hines brilliantly conveys what one might call the peripheral atmospherics of Keynes’s existence.”

Independent (UK)
“Who said economists were dull? For anyone practising economics today...this book is a treat.... We read endlessly about Keynes the economist. But he was so much more and this unputdownable book explores not so much Keynes the economist as much as Keynes the man.”

Daily Mail (UK)
“[A] rewarding and fascinating book.”

Daily Telegraph (UK)
“[A] highly enjoyable series of portraits.... Above all, Davenport-Hines sells his title and his proposition: Keynes is about much more than borrowing and spending, deficits and interest rates and in order to understand his economics one needs to understand the man and his times.”

The Scotsman (UK)
“[An] engaging and sympathetic biography.... It is extremely difficult to write a biography for the general reader of a man much cleverer than oneself, and to do so admiringly yet critically, but Davenport-Hines brings it off.”

London Evening Standard (UK)
“[A] succinct, lively and well-written biography.... [Reducing the amount written on Keynes] has been done with great elegance and panache by Davenport-Hines, in a volume that will introduce Keynes and his strange world to a new generation of readers.”

H-Net
“[Davenport-Hines’s] lens is directed not at Keynes the macroeconomist but at Keynes the man himself. Fortunately, the author has a rich and compelling story to tell.…non-economists who have never read a Keynes biography and are not looking for lots of technical detail and jargon will find it an absorbing read. Even many economists, like me, are likely to derive some fun and profit from it.”

The Oldie (UK)
“This is an entrancing book, always light but never weightless and I am sure that John Maynard Keynes would have enjoyed it.”

Library Journal
“This book will suit a broad audience wanting to understand Keynes and the period in which he lived.”

Kirkus
“An admiring and nuanced book filled with insights into this scholar and man of action in all his complexity.”

Publishers Weekly
“[A] gracefully written biography.... This is a delightful, detailed portrait, rich in interesting anecdote and encompassing the entire roster of Keynes’s accomplishments.”

Eric Rauchway, author of The Great Depression and the New Deal: A Very Short Introduction
“As often earthy as he was austere, cruel as he was humane, crude as he was genteel, Keynes the politician and economist yields here to Keynes the man. Richard Davenport-Hines’ fascinating character sketch shows that Keynes was all the things that the rest of us are, except ordinary.”

Sylvia Nasar, author of A Beautiful Mind
“Richard Davenport Hines’ portrait of Keynes is as vivid as fresh paint. You can see the genius of many parts dashing to Number Ten Downing Street or dancing a jig with Lydia. It’s wonderful.”

A. N. Wilson, author of Victoria: A Life
“A book which is worthy of its brilliant subject, Universal Man manages to expound Keynes’s ideas while shining with his own optimistic spirit. The fact that this is a book about intellectuals and ideas, does not prevent it from shimmering with low gossip. Richard Davenport-Hines is as deft at describing international political summit meetings as he is at evoking the ballet. Lively, funny, original, and beautifully written.”

Jay Parini, author of The Last Station: A Novel of Tolstoy's Final Year
“John Maynard Keynes was indeed the central economist of the twentieth century, a thinker of unimaginable breadth and influence. Keynes lived at the white-hot center of British intellectual and social life in his times, and he seems never to have missed a moment to relish what lay at hand. In the superb hands of Richard Davenport-Hines, one of the most gifted of critics, historians, and biographers at work today, his large life quivers into being, fully fleshed and deeply imagined. This book should attract a wide, admiring audience.”

Highly recommended presentation of Keynes the person.
By Charles A. Ellis MD
I have been collecting material by and about Keynes for more than 40 years, and this is the most satisfying of them all. The author deals at length with important aspects of Keynes's complex life, his professional activities and personal relationships, Though less-detailed than Sidelsky's admirable three-volume biography, this book is far more pleasant to sit down with of an evening without reader indigestion; yet it includes anecdotes, references and exposition much more easily approached than in the other volumes on my Keynes Shelf. It has been interesting to check material in this fine book with Moggridge, Harod, Skidelsky et alia, and I have never had the impression that Davenport-Hines has short-changed me.

A very good read on a key historical figure...More on economics would be great
By Charles de Trenck
(Apology: My understanding of early 20th century British history is not fully up to speed..)

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. It reads well and balances a history of the man with the context of his historical contributions. I was and remain averse to the Keynes legacy. But I appreciate the man a little more after reading the book.

I understand the man and his work better, and I can see the influences and the psychological backdrop that led Keynes along his path. To me, ultimately a “Hegelian desire for recognition” brought Keynes to his major turning point and his Economic Consequences of the Peace in 1919. I did not see Keynes as an Economist at this stage in his life. I saw him more as a journalist or writer with a conscience on an undercover mission. First, it was to do what he thought was right and to reveal the political machinations his idealist mind witnessed at the Versailles Peace Conference. Second, it was to redeem himself in front of his Bloomsbury Group peers, who saw him as a turncoat for the suits in Government. Keynes’s 1919 book might have been by some as something akin to Edward Snowden dumping reams of confidential memos and data on the internet. And it made him a hero with others.

The chapter on his personal life, his liaisons, was somewhat interesting. But the Lover chapter was also the one I enjoyed the least. I wasn’t into the semi-secret societies and male love intrigues, although I understand they are important to the context of Keynes’s “story”.

What I missed in the book, and would have appreciated would have been a full chapter on the economics of Keynes. I think such a chapter would complete the book – especially if it worked more at the psychology behind the ideas as well as a closer education on Keynes’s process of changing his views. I get that he changed his views as the times changed, and as he interpreted the fallacies in the UK post WWI socio-political system.
I can see as well that he was a man limited by the times he lived in. He wasn’t necessarily a visionary ahead of his time. He was the epitome of his time. At least from what I can see from the book, Keynes did not really see the end of empire until it hit him in the face when he began working with American negotiators as part of the British government teams shuttling back and forth to Washington DC during WWII.

What I also missed in the book is that Keynes is shown never to have had an equal to measure his intellect against. But we know that Keynes and Hayek held a famous dialogue through an exchange of letters, and that Hayek and the Austrian School had a few words to say about Keynes’s work, although Hayek is flagged for not having issued a critique of the General Theory (It is speculated that Hayek delayed because he expected Keynes’s thinking to evolve as it had in the past and the General Theory would be an intermediate step to further work, as previous work had been). This entire discussion was not mentioned anywhere. Not in the footnotes. Not in the bibliography. Keynes and Hayek appeared to have points on which they agreed, and issues on which they disagreed. It would have been good to have the same author detail these, and potentially other similar issues.

Keynes’s involvement with the Bloomsbury Set (p. 253) is likely the fulcrum of Keynes’ss life. It was where his core relationships were and where he drew his deepest desire to make his mark on the world. His “desire for recognition” (ie, Hegelian desire…) arose out of their chiding and his desire to “reclaim his standing” (p. 255). At the same time his Economic Consequences of the Peace, the work that shot Keynes to fame, was driven by Bloomsbury’s forcing Keynes to challenge his employer, the government, and its policies (p. 271).

Finally, the last few pages of the last chapter, Envoy, begin a new direction on where Keynes was heading post WWII, a time when the formation of the Modern State was in full swing in countries that were deemed free and on whose behalf Keynes had toiled to influence the set-up of economic systems. But as the American government rolled into action post war (who, after all, appeared to have well read their Keynes), he saw the IMF, World Bank get established, and Bretton Woods envelope currency systems around the West. And his first responses appeared to oppose these institutions’ initial direction and American imprint. We get a taste of his initial outrage. But there is no link to understanding how his thinking could have evolved. Could Keynes have shifted to more anti-establishment after seeing how the establishment used his ideas?

Ultimately we are left with the case of the intellectual becoming a man of action inside government. I had the opportunity to look at this issue in my study of Alexandre Kojeve – a Hegelian and sometimes Marxist eventually named “Kojevian” and an early Eurocrat given his early contributions to the creation of the Treaty of Rome. My early read of Kojeve was that he combined theory and action. That he was an intellectual who eventually put his money where his mouth was. But what I have realized more and more over the years is that most of these exercises have created Frankensteins. The European Community’s vision in theory was appealing. But in practice it is poorly implemented at best.

Keynes’s work on “universal” currencies appears in context of the formation of the IMF. But given his initial disaffection for the American control of the process, could we have seen a development toward an early understanding of the fallacies of trying to align national currencies with economies running at different growth rates and producing different levels of quality and quantity of output?

Almost like a single book-end that doesn't really hold up the stature of the man ...
By William Gianopulos
A diverse read that takes us into various avenues of Keynes' mind and life. Doubtless the author hoped to tie together the many loose ends of Keynes life into a cohesive whole, but I'm not sure he was successful. For example, Keynes' sexual proclivities relate more to his Cambridge and Bloomsbury connections and play no part to his substantive impact on 20th (and 21st) Century economics. I found this chapter particularly odd, almost like a single book-end that doesn't really hold up the flow of any part of the book. But the writer helped me come to appreciate the man and his extraordinary times, and his role as the quintessential public servant, called upon to help solve intractable problems. You come to realize his stature dwarfs the likes of Krugman and Stiglitz; I dare say he would shudder to hear them speak his name in public. A true Liberal, Keynes would still shun the Socialists now ruling and teaching in elite universities around the world.
