Surprised how much I learned in a short amount of time
By Ray A. Coker
I am a waterfall type of guy having been a PM consultant for 25 years, and I grew up in the business working for the product group that created the first waterfall planning tool for the PC. Honestly I haven't read a lot of PM literature over the years because I find it so painfully dull, but I have been fortunate to have have been associated incredible project teams and leaders all over the world and across industries. When I saw incredible results, I looked for the cause, what I discovered provided the foundation for most of what I know today as a project manager, and it helped establish the foundation of my business perspectives. The last few years I have been resistant to agile methodologies whenever the topic came up in meetings and conversations and I have in general dismissed the approach as a type of planning avoidance technique. But a few months ago I was reviewing an RFP that was requesting help on a hand-off project from the developer (a government agency) to the customer (a related but different agency). A couple of things surprised me: 1) the development team literally loved what they had created, hand-off to them was critical because they cherished their product so much, and 2) they credited agile methodology for the project's success (there is that cause I always look for), and 3) it was a huge project, several years many millions spent. @#$%, I remember thinking, now I am going to have to go and figure out this agile stuff. I found Ms. Davis's book is a great place to start, especially if you are like me and you pick up a business book but then find it hard to get through the pages. The book is extremely well organized, it is well written, and you can pick up the value from the book quickly in a few readings. The book took what I know, waterfall methodology and placed agile alongside so I could easily discover what agile is all about - a great way to learn anything new.

By Lenorems
Extremely well written, clear and easy to apply. If you're a project manager, practitioner or presenter, or someone simply interested in Agile or prepping for the PMI-ACP exam, this is for you. I applaud Ms. Davis on accomplishing what others have set out to do but failed. Kudos!

Historical References Mixed with Cutting-Edge Methods
By Jeff Beals
"Agile Practices for Waterfall Projects: Shifting Processes for Competitive Advantage" is an all-inclusive, well organized book that helps project managers, whether relatively new or possessing a great deal of experience, be more successful.
From her early days at IBM, through her teaching/training tenure, to her consulting work now, Barbee Davis has "grown up" in the project management profession. Her years of experience and deep insight come to life in her writing. She mixes historical references with cutting edge methods. In this book, Barbee does an outstanding job of laying out an easy-to-follow pathway for implementing Agile into an organization that follows the Waterfall method. She backs it all up by sharing examples of how several entities have successfully integrated the methods. Highly recommended for all project managers!
