Norman, Assistant Dean, Program for Educational Research and Development, and Professor, Department Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, McMaster University, Canada,John Cairney, Associate Professor, Department of Family Medicine, McMaster University, Canada
David Steiner is a clinical psychologist by training, and currently a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics and in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, both at McMaster University. David is a Senior Scientific Editor of Health Reports, and sits on the editorial boards of four other journals. He has written or edited 9 books, in the areas of statistics, epidemiology, public health, and measurement theory; and have published over 350 articles in these and other areas. David's main interests are quality of life in people with various medical conditions, scale development, research design, treatment of the homeless mentally ill, and woodworking.

A must read for people who want to develop a new instrument/scale to assess health behavior

If you want to develop a new instrument/scale to assess health behavior get this book. I have been doing biostatistics for a living for more than a dozen years and this book in its various forms has remained one of my favorites because of it's clear writing and spot on advice. Over the years countless doctors have proposed using an instrument they have created to assess response to a new treatment. This book covers exactly why that is two projects not one. Development/validation of the instrument is its own project. This book covers the statistics and methods used to properly assess the reliability and validity of new (or existing) instrument/test/scale with fantastically clear writing. There are many examples taken from medicine and a fair number coming from education and psychology. All are clearly explained.
There are no proofs or derivations in this book. Instead you will find basic algebra and worked examples for most of the statistics. All the coverage is good but one of the truly excellent features of this book is the coverage of intra-class correlation. Nobody has done a better job explaining ICCs.
Some of my students find Norman and Streiner's Biostatistics the Bare essentials hilarious others find it too wordy. While there are rare funny comments this book has been edited to be much more concise and not silly. So, while it is not mathematically rigorous, it is a serious book. While this is a statistics and methods book at it's core, the writing is accessible for anyone with a background in medicine, education or psychology, as well as people coming from mathematics who like clean prose.
While this book could be better (if it had a web supplement with detailed coverage of SAS and/or R) it is otherwise fantastic.
