Improve eye appeal and readability of your emails, reports, blogs or LinkedIn posts

I started using this book when I was writing newsletter content and developing my own print layouts — at one time for a dozen clients simultaneously. It helped me create documents that were not only attractive but highly readable as well. Now I recommend it for day-to-day business use. Yes, there is a difference in an email, a report, a blog or a LinkedIn post that follows Mr. Williams' tips for spacing, subheads, font style, white space and quotation marks.

As The Ruthless Editor, I know that words count. So does punctuation. But I don't discount the impact of the pleasing use of fonts, bolding, italics and spacing. I have recommended this book to many colleagues and clients, and I will continue to do so.

Invaluable reference for any self-published author

This book is short, sweet and very used-friendly. Kind of a Strunk's Elements of Style for typography. I just self-published my first book and I made all the rookie mistakes. Read this book BEFORE you publish your Great American Novel -- it will save you a lot of re-editing and re-formatting when you're finally ready to push the PUBLISH IT button.

I needed this book for a class I was taking. I realized after buying it that I didn't really need it because the information inside was so basic. If you are pretty advanced with a computer I would say skip out on getting this book. If you are a beginner computer user then this book is a good jumping point. It is very very basic information on how to use a computer (Mac).

Not exactly what I thought

I thought this was going to be more of a text book but it is basically a $70 magazine. Good high level information on Retail Category Management, but the price for what you get is disproportionate in my opinion. I should have read the description better I guess.

Awesome!

This book is great. It really does teach some basic concepts of physics in a simple way that young children can understand. My two year old asks me to read it to her frequently, and will often talk about her ball having energy, or being made of atoms. Also, it's worth it just to hear your toddler say, "Quantum Physics, please!"

This is a great book that states concepts simply and makes the science approachable for young kids. You need not worry this is some helicopter parent tool for sucking all the joy out of childhood. It is a picture book with simple pictures and no harder to read than "Good Night Moon". Why not foster love of science early?

The love a man has for his wife

Here'a wonderful, basic story of heartfelt love. There was something about Ruby from the first day Jack saw her at the picnic table where all the migrant workers met before work. Ruby Pitt was a woman that bore her share of crosses.
This story follows Jack's love for his wife through their marriage, through Ruby's illness and beyond.
It's a sweet story that will pull at your heart strings and I have to say, it had me crying at one point til I couldn't see through the tears.
You will love Ruby and Jack. You'll want to take their hands and help them. And there are some characters that you just won't like at all! Some truely mean people.
This is a quick read and a very enjoyable, hard to put down book. I strongly recommend reading this book. It's just plain old fashioned love and tenderness between two good human beings and the struggles they endure.

A virtuous man, too

This is a story told in two voices.
One is Ruby's...kind,beautiful Ruby, who happens to be at the right place at the right time when she meets Jack Stokes. The opposite of her abusive, drinkin, womenizin first husband. Ruby tells us how Jack takes her away from all that dysfunction, promising her a decent life, caring for her, treating her like the lady she is.
Jack devotes himself completely to Ruby, gives his heart to her, showing his love in unique ways. For instance, buying her a mule!
He isn't the best looking man, or the smartest...but that was enough for Ruby.
Then there's Jack's voice. Jack is a man after my own heart. I couldn't help thinking...this book could have just as well been called, "A Virtuous Man"
40 yrs old when he sets eyes on Ruby sitting under a pecan tree...He says, "now that's a girl I could marry."
And after those eyes meet hers, nothing is the same. Everything afterwards begins and ends with Ruby.
I adored Jacks narrative, his kindness, the love he expressed to Ruby. After Ruby dies, the only thing keeping him going is wishing and hoping she comes back...laying next to him in bed, her skin touching his skin, smelling of lavender, and eating her usual dish of yogurt.
Gibbon's gives us other memorable characters also, like Little Fran, who is the devil dressed as a fat woman.
She gives up Mavis, who is hired when Ruby dies to help around the house but mostly helps herself to orange candy and soda and breaks the toilet seat.
I enjoyed the book, but the 4 star rating is for Jack. His voice makes the story much more interesting than it would have been otherwise.

Excellent Read

Beautifully written, A Virtuous Women, is the quiet love story of Ruby Pitt Woodrow, daughter of a rich farmer, and Jack Stokes, a tenant farmer. At first they seem an unlikely match, Ruby, although 20 years younger than Jack, is already widowed, Jack, unattractive and unsuccessful, has never been married. But both have had tough lives. Ruby is alienated from her parents due to her brief marriage which was a disaster. She is working as a maid when she meets Jack. Jack has never had much, although his dream is to own a piece of land. Together they find, if not what they were looking for, a sense of completeness.

The book is written in first person narration with both Jack and Ruby narrating alternate chapters (except the last chapter which is written in the third person). This technique helps make both characters seem real. For me, personally, Jack was the character I most cared about, mostly because we know from the very beginning that Ruby dies and we see that Jack is lost without her.

This is one of those simple, quiet kind of books where there is little action or plot, just the story of two people who come to love and care for each other. Yet, it's the kind of story that will stay with you long after you've read it.

Interesting stories

As the title says this book is a collection of stories about people who lived and were influential during the early European settlement of British East Africa. Some of the stories are from interviews with people who were there at the time and knew the persons concerned. I enjoyed it. Stories are a good length to read before going to sleep.

Mind-blowing

I have never read a book quite like this before. It is completely devoid of political correctness so often associated with revisionist history. The narrative is sharp and cuts like a knife. This book was copyright in 1954 which affords it two advantages: 1) it pre-dates political correctness and 2) The stories are told as first hand accounts told by the old timers when they were still alive. I can't begin to tell you how exciting it is to read African history when it's told by those who were actually there when the history was the present and not the past. Whew! What a ride!

Unexpected pleasures

This book goes well beyond Mr. Hunter's usual white hunter/safari fair. It is about a collection of characters, Arab, African, European and others who were around at the turn of the 20th century and on into the late '40's. It would probably NOT be considered politically correct, but Mr. Hunter and his co-author Daniel Mannix try their best to be unbiased in telling their tales. It begins with the story of Arab slaver Tippu Tib who had many adventures, including helping Stanley find Livingstone! A nice sketch of John Boyes (who was for a time, the king of the Kikuyu) is included for those who haven't read his own book. It finishes with Dr. L. S. B. Leakey who was as much Kikuyu as white man. I was unaware of his role in the Mau Mau troubles. In all, there are 15 tales of individuals and families who were part of the opening of Africa. As the authors say in the end: "Some were cruel, some prideful; probably a number of these pioneers were unwise, as all humans are. Many were heroes in the best sense of the word. But they all shared in a quality of courage which is the essential ingredient-at any frontier, on any continent, and at any time."
Finally, there is a nice bibliography at the end. I hope to read many of those tomes listed, if I can find them!

About the Author
Alan Peat is the author of 18 publications on a wide range of subjects. His literacy books have been best sellers for both Nash Pollock Publishing and Questions Publishing. He is now director of his own publishing company, Creative Educational Press Ltd which publishes books by Alan and a range of other teachers/authors and illustrators. Alan is currently working on a wordless picture book and accompanying teaching materials, The Elves and the Shoemaker, 1897 as well as his first children's book The Magic Stone, both of which will be illustrated by John Harrold, who was the Rupert Bear artist for over thirty years. Alan has written for the Times Educational Supplement, Teaching Thinking Magazine and many other teaching journals. His practical ideas and approaches to raising literacy standards and motivating children to write have now been used in 22 countries. Alan draws on his experience as an LEA (Local Education Authority) Adviser with cross-phase responsibility for Literacy and Gifted and Talented provision, Head of a Museum and Gallery Service and Teaching and Learning Consultant for Blackburn LEA. Brilliant inspiration for teaching narrative and cohesion

Loved seeing all the different ways you could tell the story. I'll be using some with my class after Christmas. I think they'll favour the short versions, not realising that they are the most difficult. Can't wait to see what they do to Goldilocks or Jack and the Beanstalk.

About the Author

Joseph S. Valacich is an Eller Professor of Management Information Systems in the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona. He has had visiting faculty appointments at Buskerud College (Norway), City University of Hong Kong, Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Riga Technical University (Latvia), and Helsinki School of Economics and Business. He received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Arizona (MIS), and M.B.A. and B.S. (computer science) degrees from the University of Montana. His teaching interests include systems analysis and design, collaborative computing, project management, and management of information systems. Professor Valacich cochaired the national task forces to design IS 2010: The Model Curriculum and Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs in Information Systems. He also served on the Executive Committee, funded by the National Science Foundation, to define the IS Program Accreditation Standards and on the Board of Directors for CSAB (formally, the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board), representing the Association for Information Systems (AIS). He was the general conference co-chair for the 2003 International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), and the co-chair for the Americas’ Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS) in 2012.

Prior to his academic career, Dr. Valacich worked in the information systems field as a programmer, systems analyst, and technical product manager. He has conducted numerous corporate training and executive development programs for organizations, including AT&T, Boeing, Dow Chemical, EDS, Exxon, FedEx, General Motors, Microsoft, and Xerox.

Dr. Valacich is the co-Editor-in-Chief for AIS Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction, a senior editor at MIS Quarterly and was formerly an associate editor for Information Systems Research. He has published more than 200 scholarly articles in numerous prestegious journals and conferences. His scholarly work has had a tremendous not only on the field of information systems, but also on a number of other disciplines, including computer science, cognitive and social psychology, marketing, and management. In February 2014, Google Scholar lists his citation counts over 13,800, with an H-index of 54. He is also a coauthor of the leading Modern Systems Analysis and Design (Seventh Edition) and Information Systems Today (Seventh Edition).


Joey F. George is professor of information systems and the John D. DeVries Endowed Chair in Business at the Iowa State University College of Business. Dr. George earned his bachelor’s degree at Stanford University in 1979 and his Ph.D. in management at the University of California at Irvine in 1986. He was previously the Edward G. Schlieder Chair of Information Systems in the E. J. Ourso College of Business Administration at Louisiana State University. He also served at Florida State University as Chair of the Department of Information and Management Sciences from 1995 to 1998.

Dr. George has published dozens of articles in such journals as Information Systems Research, Communications of the ACM, MIS Quarterly, Journal of MIS, and Communication Research. His research interests focus on the use of information systems in the workplace, including computer-based monitoring, computer-mediated deceptive communication, and group support systems.

Dr. George is coauthor of the textbooks Modern Systems Analysis and Design, Seventh Edition, published in 2014, and Object-Oriented Systems Analysis and Design, Second Edition, published in 2007, both from Pearson. He has served as an associate editor and senior editor for both MIS Quarterly and Information Systems Research. He served three years as the editor-in-chief of the Communications of the AIS. Dr. George was the conference cochair for the 2001 ICIS, held in New Orleans, Louisiana; conference chair for the 2012 ICIS held in Orlando, FL; and the doctoral consortium cochair for the 2003 ICIS, held in Seattle, Washington. He is a Fellow of the Association for Information Systems (AIS) and served as President of AIS in 2010—11.

Jeffrey A. Hoffer is the Sherman—Standard Register Professor of Data Management for the Department of MIS, Operations Management, and Decision Sciences in the School of Business Administration at the University of Dayton. He also taught at Indiana University and Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Hoffer earned his B.A. from Miami University in 1969 and his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1975.

Dr. Hoffer has coauthored all editions of three college textbooks: Modern Systems Analysis and Design, with George and Valacich; Managing Information Technology: What Managers Need to Know, with Brown, DeHayes, Martin, and Perkins; and Modern Database Management, with Ramesh and Topi, all published by Pearson Prentice Hall. His research articles have appeared in numerous journals, including the MIS Quarterly—Executive, Journal of Database Management, Small Group Research, Communications of the ACM, and Sloan Management Review. He has received research grants from Teradata (Division of NCR), IBM Corporation, and the U.S. Department of the Navy.

Dr. Hoffer is cofounder of the International Conference on Information Systems and Association for Information Systems and has served as a guest lecturer at the Catholic University of Chile, Santiago, and the Helsinki School of Economics and Business in Mikkeli, Finland.

$160???? Really?????!

Because I'm a university faculty member in a Computer Science department and have taught classes containing the subject matter in this book, I received an unsolicited instructor's evaluation copy for review from the publisher.

Frankly, I find it impossible to take this book seriously, not because of its content (adequate) or its quality (looks really nice) or how well it fits my class (fairly closely). It's the PRICE!!!! Why make my students pay $160 for a paperback text when there are so many more (cheaper) possibilities out there? This book should be priced in the $40 range and no higher.

Publishers like Prentice Hall/Pearson should know better. As tuition and fees keep rising faster than a politician's income, we faculty members are doing everything we can to keep our students' costs down, and that means avoiding high-priced books like this....

This book is the most boring text I've read in my years to taking courses. Granted, it is a text book, so I'm not expecting epic adventure. But still, it should grab the readers' attention. After reading this book I feel like I've absorbed absolutely nothing.

But, if it's required for your course, what choice do you really have right? Just be warned, you will most likely need to find alternate sources of information to actually absord. This book is awful.

Rather dull

This book is extremely dull. The case questions don't really seem to get the idea of systems analysis in one's head. The layout is clumsy and hard to understand, and the book is ridiculously priced. $160? For a paperback? This is crazy; you can do all the research online for free! In all my time of using Pearson, Pearson publishers create boring books filled with typos and overpriced textbooks. Do not buy this book; rent if you need it. You will save /so/ much money!

I am more than halfway through the course, and the book is not very good. It seems to only tell you /what/ the steps are in each chapter, not /how/ to do them. One would think you would need both, but, as with most of the Pearson books, it does not. I would suggest that all users of the textbook use it as told, but be prepared to do a good amount of online research.

What Wikipedia Can't Tell You About Social Selling

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few years you know that Social Selling is one of the most important trends in selling for decades. For that reason I was eager to pick up Jamie Shanks new book Social Selling Mastery - Scaling Up Your Sales And Marketing Machine For The Digital Buyer.

I'll be candid. Knowing Jamie Shanks from his presentations and blog posts, my expectation of Social Selling Mastery was that it would be a concise collection of social strategies for the individual. What I got however, was so much more. In addition to strategies for the individual, Social Selling Mastery contains information that is much deeper and rare.

The book is broken down into three sections:
Part One: Creating a Mindshift to Digital Transformation
Part Two: Social Selling Mastery for the Sales Professional
Part Three: Building a Lead Factory with Digital Content Marketing

I realized immediately how valuable and important these additional areas (Part One & Three) are as I reflected on my own efforts to operationalize social selling within my own organization. Jamie's experience and lessons from the school of hard knocks come out loud and clear in these pages. It takes you to core issues (and frankly places you may not have considered) when it comes to successfully rolling out social selling efforts.

Jamie doesn't mince words - which is a quality I like. He is not afraid to give tough medicine about why a given area is important and what is required to succeed. Many times within these pages he makes statements like "If you are not willing to do X you will fail." That spells it out for you clear and simple. Do you want this or don't you? Are you willing to do this or aren't you? What's so great is that because the path to success is spelled out so clearly you can fully comprehend what you are committing to. I find this candor to be one of the most valuable aspects of the book.

A good of time is invested in the importance of, and how to, integrate marketing and sales. This is a chronic problem in almost every organization today and Jamie gets tactical on how to address this and why it must be addressed for long-term success in social selling. Bravo for not looking the other way and offering a practical steps on how to get there!

The strategies for the individual sales contributor met my expectations and were given in the context of the entire change initiative. The value in Part Two of the book is outstanding and makes Social Selling Mastery a worthy investment for lone wolf types who may not have garnered the support of their entire organization yet. It covers everything from macro-level strategies to the daily routine sales reps should follow. This section alone is worth the price of the book.

There is equal value for sales and marketing leaders who seek to embark on the absolutely necessary incorporation of social selling into their sales and marketing operations. Myths are dispelled and discrete, actionable advice is given how to get from here to there. This is extremely rare information right now and the knowledge shared in Social Selling Mastery comes right from the streets of reality as opposed to theory.

My expectations of Social Selling Mastery were greatly exceeded. It's not just a collection of social selling tips. Rather, it is a guide on how to implement social selling for both the individual and the organization backed by both data and experience. That approach I feel, will make Social Selling Mastery much more of a timeless work that will continue to be valuable for years to come. I recommend it for both individuals as well as organizational leaders. 5 Stars.

This book should never leave your desk.

This book is great. It lays out your step by step plan of how to get your team into social selling and how to blur the lines between marketing and sales. It took me over 4 years to figure out many of the things he shares in his book. If you're just starting out or just thinking about getting involved in social selling, this is your go-to book.

It's easy to read and should be sitting on your desk. Follow it and you will be successful

Tthe best handbook I have yet read on how to design, execute AND scale a productive and effective inbound lead generation program in the 21st century where the power balance between buyers and sellers has changed completely and where buyers’ behavior and their buying journeys are following completely different steps compared to the previous century.
